Q. I have an overbite and i’m losing my 4 front teeth.I’m thinking of removing the teeth and getting partial acrylic dentures and wearing them for a year and then switching to the flexi partial or dental implants whichever will be easeier on my wallet. My question is should i get braces first and then worry about my teeth falling out later? The reason i ask is because another dentist recommended just that and thought it was odd but then again i’m not a dentist.I will appreciate your response in this matter cause i’m so confused and i need to decide which will be the most effective dental plan for me.Thank you so much.
A. If your remaining teeth would benefit form a better position and if your gum line will be improved for future implants for your 4 front teeth I would also recommend a brace. Hope that helps

Q. Dear Mr. Patel Let me allow that I introduce my problem.I am 21 and my cief complaint is my upper and lower crowding. Info – Relationship of frontal teeth: Overjet: 2-3mm Overbite 2mm, Midlines upper is OK lower 1,5mm to the left, Dental crowding severe, Crossbite UR2-LR3. Next year year I’ll study at London Business School and I think that this is good opportunity to correct my teeths aswell. I want to ask you is in this case possible to correct teeths with Veneers, removable braces or Invisaglin braces? Because I realy want fast solution and I think that veneers are the best but on the other hand I am also prepared for longer treatment and wear braces but only which I mention in upper text. I just want to hear your advice because everywhere offer me just Damonbraces and similar braces which I realy do not want to wear because they do not fit my lifestyle. I am looking forward to hearing from you soon. I am also prepared to send you photos of my teeths,smile,x-ray scans if this help you to give me advice.
A. Veneers can create a lovely smile but the downside is your teeth have to cut down, this means they will need a lifetime of treatment. As your teeth are already crooked it would be very difficult to create a nice smile with veneers without removing a lot of natural tooth. My preferred treatment would be orthodontics, invisalign is the most discreet, 6 month smiles is the quickest and damon braces are very good for very crowed mouths.

Q. Hi Dr Riten, I just got traditional braces on my upper teeth cause of overbite my dentist said it would be removed after four weeks and then retainer will be placed in mouth which will exert furthur forced on teeth. I have approx 5 mm overbite.Have you gone through such sort of cases and is it possible to straighten the teeth in 4 weeks time? i am so confused kindly response? and also my one gum is bleeding everyday after braces place in??
A. It does seem very quick , if the teeth are not in the correct position in 4 weeks I am sure your dentist will prolong the treatment.

Q. hello there, i’m 23 years old and i hate my teeth. i have 2 large front teeth and have fangs either side. my bottom teeth are really crooked. can my front teeth be cut down? i don’t really want braces on show. what do you reccommend? roughly how much does it cost? and how long will it take? thank you
A. Although you don’t want a brace it might be your best option in the long-term. You could try a fixed brace such as 6-month smile cost approx £2500 or Invisalign from £3000. These treatments would take around 6-12 months to complete.

Q. I have an overbite (due to sucking my thumb when little) My teeth are slightly discoloured and the front two are slightly too large for my face. I was wondering if crowns could be used to lessen the overbite and shape my teeth, as I don’t think I can go through braces again (I had a very bad experience with block braces to widen my arch…which ended in me not wearing it.) Cost isn’t an issue, but before I go to my dentist I wanted a fist opinion. Many thanks
A. Hello, crowns might help but you cannot reduce the overbite significantly without using a brace.
I would be very happy to take a look for you. Please feel free to contact my clinic on 01245 268 494 to arrange a visit to discuss your options. Regards Andrew

Q. dear doctor, i just want to have some information regarding my teeth straightening, i mean my front teeth are little bit tilted towards outside. Can u please help me that how much time will it take to get it done and in how many days? Thank You
A. hi many thanks for your email, the teeth straightening can be done using a brace which can take upto 12 months dependant on the severity or can also be done using porcelain which is more of a quick fix method and can be achieved within 8 – 10 weeks. there are draw backs of option 2 because the teeth do require preparation and also the veneers will not last forever so you do need to factor in getting them replaced. hope this is helpful.

Q. I have recently had several extraction from the top and bottom. I have an overbite and looking into getting braces soon. Will the fact that I have several missing teeth be any problems with getting my overbite corrected?
A. hi many thanks for your email, this is generslly not a problem however the missing teeth do need to be considered in the overall treatment plan. my advice would be to seek an orthodontist for a consultation. hope this is helpful.

Q. My daughter is 16 and has some mild crowding in the upper and lower arches, she also has a deep anterior bite and a slightly untidy posterior bite on the left side. She has been told that this can be corrected with Invisalign but she would also have to use elastic bands which would be anchored with small metal hooks – can you tell me is this normal treatment for an overbite with Invisalign? She is devastated that Invisalign won’t be so invisible after all. Your reply would be much appreciated.
A. Extra elastics are sometimes necessary. Although the brace will not be completely invisible it will certainly look far better than conventional braces

Q. HELLO DR PATEL. I HAD A ROOT CANAL ON A LARGE UPPER MOLAR. IT HAS NOW STOPED HURTING. I CAN EAT PAIN FREE ON IT, TOUCH IT PAIN FREE, TAP IT PAIN FREE. HOWEVER IT FEEL WEIRD LIKE THERE A SMALL AMOUNT OF PRESSURE IN IT . MY FRONT TEETH HAVE STARTED TO ACHE SINCE THE ROOT CANAL. MY JAW ALSO ACHES NEAR MY EARS. I HAVE HAD THE BITE ADJUSTED AND ITS PERFECT. COULD THIS BE SINUS? KIND REGDS.
A. If there was infection it could take a while to settle it sounds like the symptoms are reducing so I would wait until everything is pain free. It could be a sinus infection or the fact that the bite was too proud. Leave everything for at least 10 days unless symptoms get worse.

Q. hello…well i have an small overbite on the top row of my teeth, only effecting 6 of my top teeth. The rest of my teeth are straight. Do you roughly know much braces with cost me? Can i get veneers? or fixed braces?
A. hi many thanks for your email, for what you have described i think both options of the braces or veneers are available. the braces are the most conservative option. the cost of which would start at £1500. hope this is helpful.

Q. hi. im 26 and at the moment im having some real problems, that is really making me very depressed. last year i was asked to be referred so i could have fixed braces as i was having alot of pressure in my mouth which i was told was due to a over crowd. i was fitted up braces but im a full time student at university and have two young children, i cant afford to have these braces as much as i want to. i have noti
ced these past few month that my teeth are pushing forward which is causing me a lot of pain, my bite has changed and im now having to hold my jaw at an angle due to this. is there any way i could get any help with having these braces fitted? or would i be able to have them on the nhs? it is really ruining my life at the moment and affecting everything that i do. i have constantly got aches and pains in my mouth, my teeth feel so tight has they are pushing with no where to go, and it also causes headaches and pain at the top of my neck. im at my wits end with it. if u could help me it would be great.
A. I doubt you will get braces as an adult, on the NHS. I also doubt whther they will help your symptoms. i would consider a bite guard worn at night to try to stop you clenching or grinding your teeth and to realign your bite as this is probably the cause of your facial pain. If money is a problem you might try a referral to a local dental teaching hospital?

Q. Dr. Patel, I have had braces now for about 2 years and my orthodontist plans to take them off in a few weeks. I feel I my upper teeth still overlap my bottom teeth too much. I discussed it with her but she just said it was within normal range. A lot of pictures I have been seeing of people that’s had braces have a more flat facial profile. What is the ideal overbite? Should my mustache area protrude out farther than my lower lip area?
A. It depends on the position of your jaws, the teeth can be moved to the correct position but if your bottom jaw is too far behind your top jaw you will always have that appearance. If this is the case the only real option is surgery to correct the jaw positions. Talk to your dentist.

Q. Dear Dr Caplan, im currantly thinking about having braces, however i have big overbite due to my thumb sucking which i stopped many years ago, i went to the orthodontist and got told i would need an operation before i could get braces, I’m 17 years old and im just wondering after this operation which i believe they said they would have to break my jaw, how this would effect me? How long would i be in hospital after the operation, would it majorly effect the time i had to study. Any information you would be able to give me would greatly appreshiated, Many thanks, Sam.
A. You really need to discuss this with the orthodontist and surgeon who is planning your operations as there are many different operations that are undertaken to solve orthodontic problems

Q. Hi, I was wondering if you could help. I think I have a crossbite; my teeth dont sit properly against each other, and if i try toi, my bottom front teeth go behind my top teeth, although my jaw is quite forward so doesnt seem like an underbite. This makes my mouth curve down making me look unhappy even though I’m not, and makes my mouth and jaw look small compared to the rest of my face. I was wondering if invisilign might help this, or surgery, or if this is even something that can be fixed. It feels like my jaw is out of line but I guess I’m use to it so havent done anything. thanks a lot foryour time
A. You may well require surgery as ti sounds as though you have a problem with your relative jaw positions.

Q. I have a really bad over bite due to year of thumb sucking as a child. I also have a genetic problem which is making the overbite worse, and a very bad lisp due to this. My dentist has recommended either braces or an operation to fix this (he thinks the operation is more likely) Is this something they offer on the NHS. Do you have any other suggestions?
A. Yes you need to see an orthodontist they may refer you to a local hospital to have the treatment which should be available on the nhs.

Q. Hello, I am 28 years old. I took my braces off 10 years ago after wearing them for 2.5 years (I also had 4 extractions 2 at the top, 2 at the bottom on the sides of my mouth). I wore my retainers for the first 2 years, and kinda just stopped wearing them after that. 10 years later…I feel I have an overbite. Please note, my teeth are very straight and I still get compliments all the time on my teeth. However, I am concerned. I went to see two orthodontists; one said i will need braces for 18 months, another said I don’t need braces, just a bite adjustment and a retainer. What should I do? I still feel I need braces for the overbite, but I feel the ortho is exaggerating the length of time in order to make money off of me. Please advise on what I should do? Also, if I have to wear braces, what is the average amount of time i would have to wear braces granted I’ve worn them before? Please help. Thanks!!
A. If you do not trust the opinions you have already, please book in to see another orthodontist. I am not an orthodontist so I cannot advise you acurately on the way forward, even mor so without seeing your teeth.
You are welcome to book in with an opinion with my collegue who is an orthosontist, Dr Darsh Patel- www.umbrellasmiles.com

Q. I always feel and do biting my inner cheeks and lips. This habit started for the past one month. The wounds disappears soon and i find my lips and inner cheeks dry. Give me some advice.
A. You need to see your dentist it could be that your wisdom teeth are causing this but there may be another reason. Go and see your dentist and explain this to him / her.

Q. Dr Moore could I have veneers if my bite is not perfect? ie I can put my bottom teeth over my top but not my top teeth over my bottom teeth. I have always hated my smile and at 48yrs really would love to have a nice smile
A. Veneers are harder to do with this sort of bite but still possible in most cases. You need a thorough examination of the bite and a diagnostic set up so you can decide how the venees will look priort o beginning treatment. Let me know if I can be of any further help. Q. I have had problems with my teeth from childhood. I had overcrowded and overlapping large teeth in a small mouth, so when I was aged 10 my dentist removed 2 lower adult teeth stating that the teeth would move to fill in the gaps – they never have, and he fitted me with a brace for my upper teeth. Unfortunately all the brace achieved was to shrink my upper gum and do little to correct the overlapping teeth. I have also always had a problem of my lower teeth touching my upper mouth immediately behind my upper teeth, which over the last 30 or so years has made my mouth very sore and has resulted in uneven wearing down of my lower front teeth. I have never had a good bite – my front teeth just don’t line up to bite cleanly into anything. I have been with my current dentist for 19 years and when I asked her if anything could be done 19 years ago to improve my bite and straighten my teeth she said there was nothing that could be done due to my previous dentist shrinking my upper gum with a badly fitting brace. In 1995 I had my wisdom teeth extracted at the local hospital and suffered 10 years of pain and discomfort before my dentist finally believed me and sent me back to the hospital Dental Consulatant who performed a small procedure on the scar tissue that had become tight, resulting in my very back teeth cutting into my cheek. Then 3 years ago my dentist told me that I had an overbite that was causing me to grind my teeth (the same dentist who a few years earlier had told me I was a mouth breather!) I was referred to the Birmingham dental hospital and fitted with a splint which has helped. The problem is I have a dry mouth and have replacement saliva gel on prescription. The dry mouth is slowly causing my teeth to crumble, small chips keep coming off my front teeth, they are so uneven now. My G.P. says to use chewing gum for my dry mouth yet the dental hospital say I must not and the Consultant at the dental hospital told me to eat only soups, stews and soft food. She told me that teeth are not meant to bite into food such as apples as it causes damage! As far as I was aware front teeth are for biting and back teeth are for chewing. My Mum was a dental nurse so I was brought up to look after my teeth. I feel totally let down by my childhood and current dentist and by the attitude of the Dental Consultant – I did explain to her at the time that I love my food and eat a healthy diet with a lot of fresh raw fruit and veg, she told me that I am not to eat that sort of food as I will have to bite in to it and chew it! (I thought that’s what teeth were for – to bite and chew!) I am not a large person – I have always been very slim and can’t afford to lose weight as it takes me so long to gain weight if I lose any after illness etc. This whole experience has left me miserable and dissillusioned and I have lost weight and I no longer enjoy my food as I have been made to feel so guilty for all the wonderful raw fresh healthy food that I used to eat – I rarely eat it now, as my enjoyment has gone. I feel stuck between the conflicting advice of my Dentist who is most unhelpful, the Dental Consultant at the hospital who says the NHS has a lack of funds and expects me to eat soup for the rest of my days (I’m only 42) and my G.P. All of them believe themselves to be right and each other to be wrong – it’s me stuck in the middle getting a telling off by one of them for the “incorrect advice” as they believe I have received from the other. My Dentist originally threatened that I would have to have my jaw broken and she did everything in her power to put me off going to the Dental Hospital, she was very rude. The Dental Hospital say my overbite is not sufficiently bad enough to justify braking my jaw (thankfully). Is there any advice that you feel you can give me. I have read about overlays which I didn’t know about until tonight, all along I have said surely something to build my teeth up would help to correct my bite. As it is I feel all I have to look forward to is crumbling teeth and dentures! (As a child I didn’t give big smiles so as to hide my large crooked teeth and as an adult I don’t like people seeing my teeth because one of my front teeth is much shorter (due to my uneven bite and bits that keep breaking off)) I feel like making a complaint against my current Dentist as I discovered that 19 years ago my cousin who was older than me had a brace fitted yet my Dentist refused and said there was nothing she could do. I am an NHS patient. I am thoroughly fed up and miserable with the whole thing (hence my long letter)and have put up with a lot of ridicule over the years from some very cruel children at school and cruel adults even now. 2 years ago I felt almost suicidal as no one (G.P. and Dentist) was listening about my sore and dry mouth and problems with my bite. Any advice that you feel you may be able to give about what I can do and what the NHS may be able to do to help will be very gratefully received. (Since the NHS changes to dentistry my dentist does not seem to want to do anything even for other patients I know! She refuses to replace or alter the partial denture that my Mum has that no longer fits! I had asked my Dentist about filing down my front teeth to improve my bite to make it more level so that I can at least enjoy eating an apple without my longer tooth getting in the way! She of course said no) Many thanks in advance and sorry it’s so long, I am just so frustrated and sore and uncomfortable.
A. the advice you seem happiest with is the Dental Hospital consultant. As an existing patient you may be able to get transfrred to the teaching hospital for all your care. once in the system you have a better chance of resolving the bigger issues. good luck Rob
