Do I need to get a root canal done on a teeth that should be crowned

Monday, March 23rd, 2009
Q.
Hi, I have two root canals on my front teeth which have of course become discoloured I am going to have them crowned. Now my question is my other front tooth, it is healthy but as I call it “bucked” all my teeth are straight other then this one. I was thinking about crowning it but my dentist told me it must be root canaled first, I hate the idea of killing off a perfectly good tooth for cosmetic reasons really. I’m worried that later on I will be regretting this. My other two teeth had to be root canaled due to poor dentistry, I’m alittle worried I really want to keep my teeth : ). Any info greatly appreciated thank you for your time.

My crowned tooth at the front is causing me lot of pain

Monday, March 23rd, 2009
Q.
Hi. I have a crowned tooth at the front and it’s been causing me quite a lot of pain. My son accidently banged his toy into my front two teeth a few months back but my crowned tooth is still sore. It is painful to drink hot and cold drinks. I have been to my dentist this morning and he thinks it could need route canal work doing! Which sounds quite painful! I am on a dental health plan but my dentist says I will need referring to a specialist and could cost £1000. I am very worried. It sounds very sore and what if it does wrong? Will I be left with a gap? Or a plate with a tooth on?

Cracked tooth needs to be covered with procelain crown and then get a root canal?

Monday, March 23rd, 2009
Q.
Could you please confirm if the following advice is correct? I have a lower molar which has had a hairline crack in it for months. It cracked a few days ago and my dentist temporarily filled it today. He says I need a porcelain crown but has warned me that if at a later stage I need to have the nerves removed I would need to see a specialist who would drill through the crown and would cost in excess of £1k. What worries me is the same dentist carried out this exact procedure on my partner last year who suffered weeks of pain. My dentist now advises that this same procedure should be carried out by a specialist. What is the likelihood of the nerves needing to be removed afterwards, and is it correct that they should not be removed before the crown is fitted as it sounds a tricky procedure drilling through the crown. I cannot now be seen by my dentist for 6 weeks for the start of my treatment and am worried that my tooth will break in the meantime and also doubt the expertise of my dentist. I would be very grateful for your advice. Thank you.

Capped teeth giving a wedged feeling in the gums

Monday, March 23rd, 2009
Q.
Two years ago I had root canal treatment on two bottom teeth. Both teeth where then capped with gold. Just lately especially when eating meat one of the teeth feels uncomfortable not a pain just a feeling as if something is wedged between the teeth and pressing on the gum. This sensation has been coming and going for about a month now – any suggestions? The treatment I had was over £1,000 for each tooth, I would be disappointed if the proceedure has failed to do its job. Thanks

The filling in my teeth is causing pain

Monday, March 23rd, 2009
Q.
I had a white composite filling done two months ago on a back upper tooth. The dentist told me to expect some sensitivity as it was a large filling (and the drilling caused some sensitivity at the time) but the sensitivity is getting worse. Now when I eat or drink I get a dull radiating pain into my jaw which can last for up to an hour. I’m a little nervous that it might need a root canal, so I’ve been delaying calling and hoping it will resolve itself. I also think I might have exacerbated the sensitivity as I didn’t brush the filling well once it started being sensitive and someone told me this might actually have done more harm than good. I’ve started thoroughly brushing that tooth now (been doing this less than a week and still get pain, though not quite so often). Should I continue thorough brushing and see if the pain abates or is this pain a sign of something more serious and should I call my dentist?

The crown on my teeth is too large

Monday, March 23rd, 2009
Q.
Hi Dr Suri! Last week I had a root canal on my #14 molar and had a crown put on. After the root canal I had my temporary crown on for about a week and a half with no problems. My dentist put my permanent crown on two days ago and it seemed much larger than the temporary and the adjoining teeth. I experienced a lot of pain for the first day and could not chew on it. Yesterday I went back to the dentist complaining that the crown was too large and I wanted him to change it. He told me he thought it was ok and the pain should go away in a few days. I’ve had 4 crowns done before and never had that kind of pain afterwards. Right now the pain has pretty much subsided (except for a little tightness) and I can now chew on it, however I still feel the crown is too large. Should I insist that he changes this out since I feel I shouldn’t have had pain for 2 days afterwards and cosmetically it does not coform with the size of the adjoining teeth?

I have root canal on my front 2 teeth and I am really concerned about the discoloration

Monday, March 23rd, 2009
Q.
Hi I am 19 years old and I have quite a lot of fillings and root canals on some of my teeth. I have root canal on my 2 front teeth and I am really concerned about the discolouraion and that it I might lose my front teeth at an early age. What do you think would be best to do so that I wouldn’t lose it at an early age. should I have implants or what. I would really appreciate it if you could reply ASAP, thanks

Why is root canal so expensive? Is the treatment not available on NHS?

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009
Q.
Hi Dr Moore, I recently had four front caps fall out. I went to theNHS dentist and he said I would either need a denture or root canal treatment the latter costing up to 13 hundred pounds. Is this treatment not availableon the NHS? He fixed the four teeth back in but as one of the posts was broken he said it would only last a short time. Thank you.

Some doctors think I need a root canal treatment and some think i don’t

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009
Q.
Namste Dr.Patel, I had 3 X-rays taken and they all indicate that I do not need a root canal, however I do have all the symptoms of needing a root-canal. Some dentists think that it is my gum disease which is responsible for the pain in one particular tooth (#19) and if I had to get a deep cleaning that would take care of it. Another dentist thinks that is not true. He feels that if that was the case then there would be pain in all the teeth. I am so confused. Could you please give me your opinion? Thanks.
