Cracked tooth needs to be covered with procelain crown and then get a root canal?

Q. Could you please confirm if the following advice is correct? I have a lower molar which has had a hairline crack in it for months. It cracked a few days ago and my dentist temporarily filled it today. He says I need a porcelain crown but has warned me that if at a later stage I need to have the nerves removed I would need to see a specialist who would drill through the crown and would cost in excess of £1k. What worries me is the same dentist carried out this exact procedure on my partner last year who suffered weeks of pain. My dentist now advises that this same procedure should be carried out by a specialist. What is the likelihood of the nerves needing to be removed afterwards, and is it correct that they should not be removed before the crown is fitted as it sounds a tricky procedure drilling through the crown. I cannot now be seen by my dentist for 6 weeks for the start of my treatment and am worried that my tooth will break in the meantime and also doubt the expertise of my dentist. I would be very grateful for your advice. Thank you.

A. In these situations with cracked teeth we can sometimes not know how the teeth will react to crowning.  I suspect the dentist meant that if you have your tooth crowned you may nee to have your tooth root treated later if the tooth does not settle.  I cannot think why he would crown the tooth first and then root treat as a treatment plan.  Pleae ring your dentist to clarify the situation
