Should My Tooth Still Be Sore 5 Days After Root Canal Treatment?

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2015
Q.

I had a root canal done by my NHS dentist and 2 weeks later it was still bothering me. I then went to see a specialist endodontist who performed another root canal procedure (this time taking 2 hours and using a microscope and other specialist equipment). This was 5 days ago. I am able to bite down and eat on this tooth.  It is not sensitive to hot or cold but I would describe it as still aching on and off during the day. I would describe it as being generally sore. Is this normal and can it take a while for the tooth to settle after having all this work carried out on it? I haven’t had the crown put on yet and just have a temporary filling.

Can an Overbite be Corrected?

Friday, March 6th, 2015
Q.

Hi. I am a 45 year old woman who has had braces for the last two years due to close excessive spacing in my teeth (gaps between the two front teeth and the the incisors on either side). There has been an improvement however, it has been a struggle to get the gaps completely closed and eventually my orthodontist suggested I go to a dentist who will use CEREC or veneers to fill in the gaps. The dentist I was referred to has put in temporary fillings, and will insert the permanent ones in the near future. The temporary fillings seem to have made my two front teeth too wide and a bit longer. An additional unfortunate part of the whole treatment (braces) is that I now have an overbite. I have internal lingual braces at the top and external ones at the bottom. As a result of the overbite, my bottom teeth rest on the internal braces and the top teeth on the external braces at the bottom. I pointed this out to my orthodontist and we’ve began a process to rectify this. I think the braces has completely altered my face structure thus the overbite. I do not like the way I now look and wonder if the overbite can be corrected? The temporary fillings have to come out and be replaced with permanent ones, if I decide not to proceed with the treatment of filling the gaps and get the fillings taken out (I was informed that not much “chipping” of my natural teeth was done when the fillings were made)? I am desperate – it has been a very long two years and I am not sure I can mange to undertake this process for any longer, and want to know what to do. I hope you can help me. Your advice is highly appreciated. Thank you.

Why Does My Tooth Have Dark Patches On It?

Monday, February 16th, 2015
Q.

Hello Dr Hughes. My dentist drilled into my front tooth and cleaned it and got rid of the decay. Then she put a temporary filling in which is a different colour to the rest of the tooth, but part of the tooth at the top has still got a dark patch on it and also a little on one side. Will she remove those now so it’s all one colour? And if she does why didn’t she do it the first time? I am going back next week so she can finish it off and also take a mould for a crown. Thank you.

Will a Temporary Filling Harm a Newly Fixed Broken Tooth?

Thursday, February 12th, 2015
Q.

Dear Dr Hughes. My son broke his front teeth which affected the pulp area as well.We had restoration work done on the same day. His next appointment is in six months. But now he is left with the uneven restoration layer and obviously it doesn’t look good at all. I was told to wait for the nerve healing process to play out but for the time being he’s not getting his smile back.
I would like to ask if a pleasant temporary filling is possible while we are waiting for it to heal, or will it disturb the healing process? Thank you.

Is There Any Temporary Filler Treatment I Can Administer at Home?

Thursday, September 4th, 2014
Q.

Good morning Dr Hughes. I am having my bottom four front teeth pulled in five weeks’ time, and at a later date I will be having them replaced by prostheses. In the meantime, there will be a pretty obvious gap there, and  I would prefer it to be temporarily disguised. Is there any material that could be put in the gap until my new teeth are ready, and would it be possible for me to do this myself at home? I cannot afford any appointments for temporary filler as the treatment I’m already having has cost quite a lot, but I will be going a month or two without these teeth. Is there any temporary material I can put in this space so I don’t look so toothless for a few months? Thanks you.

Why Am I Getting Pain When I Chew Directly After Root Canal Treatment?

Friday, February 28th, 2014
Q.

Hi Andrew, I had my first sitting for a root canal where the dentist cleaned the tooth and canals and he used local anaesthesia. It’s been two days and I am taking antibiotics and pain killers. But the my teeth hurt whenever I chew and the pain comes from temporary filled teeth. Please let me know if this is normal? How do I know whether the root canal done by this dentist is correct? Please help me or advise me on what to do?
Also what can I do to prevent this from happening when I get my crown fitted. Thank you for your help in advance.

Can Stem Cell Technology Be Used To Create New Teeth And Is This Treatment Now Available?

Monday, February 10th, 2014
Q.

Hi Doctor, my canine tooth cracked while I was eating crisps after a temporary filling was done.
It was a small line at the side of the tooth and my dentist told me that I would need a crown and there is nothing that they could do. I have a crown now and it is not as long as my natural canine tooth, I was wondering if I could get a matching (longer) crown to replace it and if it would be suitable for canine teeth. Also I have the feeling that if I had said this and went to another dentist that my natural tooth and shape could have been saved. One more quick question as I am aware of stem cell technology, and wonder if stem cells can be taken from old dried up baby teeth? Or if you know the people growing new teeth and if they need volunteers, I’d like to try it.

I Am Worried By The Pain Caused After My Root Canal Treatment. Is The Diagnosis I Have Received, Correct?

Friday, January 24th, 2014
Q.

Hello Mark. I had a root canal treatment over a series of 3 appointments, as I was told that the tooth was inflamed & difficult to numb the area properly. I was in a lot of pain after with the temporary filling, which felt very bulky. I explained this & my dentist put the permanent filling in & gave me antibiotics in case of infection. The pain has settled but is still there intermittently and I was hooked on Nurofen for an entire week after. The pain now feels as if in it’s in my jaw & face & comes back after eating. I am a grinder & so it maybe this? I got a 2nd opinion last week & this dentist took X-rays & checked my jaw movement – he says the tooth is fine & likely to be jaw muscle damage & that I need a soft bite guard or maybe try physio & get referred by my original dentist. When the pain comes, it’s pretty bad – does this sound like an accurate diagnosis? It sounds feasible from what I have read, but am still worried & taking pain killers so much can’t be good long term. Thanks for your help.

I Had An Infection After A Temporary Filling And Now I’m Told The Only Option Is A Denture. What Would You Say I Should Do?

Tuesday, November 12th, 2013
Q.

I had a broken tooth that wasn’t painful or any trouble until my dentist decided to give it temporary filling whilst doing a couple of other fillings that were necessary, following this I have been in agony as it got infected. I went back and they gave me antibiotics which I have almost finished the course but am still in the same amount of pain. they have said they will just need to take it out and the only option of filling the gap they have given is dentures which is traumatising for me to even think about as I’m only 23 they have said no to bridges because both the teeth either side to the broken one are healthy. I never asked them to do anything to that tooth and now I’m in so much pain and upset with the tooth. they haven’t been very nice as they caused this and now are trying to force dentures upon me and keep saying I have no other options. I am absolutely distraught over this and I desperately want some help?

Am I In Trouble After My Root Canal Procedure?

Friday, April 12th, 2013
Q.

I have just had a root-canal treatment done on my lower right molar. My dentist has made my molar tooth smooth but the upper and lower teeth do not touch each other now hence creating a little pressure on my premolar tooth (as they now easily touch each other). What should I do? And is capping necessary after root-canal? If I don’t will my filling break away?I am a non-vegetarian and I have a tooth missing near my treated tooth. This is causing me quite a bit of stress and confusion actually so I would appreciate any advice that you feel may be helpful.
