How can my crossbite be improved without costing so much?

Thursday, June 28th, 2012
Q.

I have suffered with TMD for several years, jaw pain, neck pain etc. I have tried various treatments but have now finally seen a orthodontist who specialises in TMJ. I am having a device made to help ,move my jaw into position but been advised that this will only be a short term solution and I will need my bite fixing, I have a crossbite, narrow upper and lower jaw amongst other problems. this involves another device to stretch my upper and lower jaw to make room for my teeth which are overcrowded particularly on the bottom. The cost will be around £9,000 which is worrying me. Can I get my bite improved without going to such expense. The cause of my jaw problem is my poor bite which has also caused me to clench my teeth. At the moment I am so desperate to sort my TMD out I am happy to pay the initial cost for the jaw device but the rest seems excessive. I have been told I will also require an MRI scan which will I will have to pay for.

Can I receive braces for free?

Tuesday, June 26th, 2012
Q.

Hello Doctor, I am currently a 23 year old full time worker. I work for the nhs and i have always had very crooked teeth. This really gets me down and i feel very self-conscious. I had 12 teeth removed when i was younger due to overcrowding and i have now been left with a very unattractive smile. I would love to have braces fitted but cannot afford them privately, i know a few people who have had braces fitted for free and i would like to know if I’m in any way eligible for this work to be done because i work for the nhs? and how do i go about receiving the treatment? if not, do you know how i could spread the costs of the treatment? Thank you for your time.

My teeth are overcrowded what is the best treatment option out of braces, dentures or implants?

Wednesday, August 31st, 2011
Q.

I am 31 years old. I havecrowded teeth. That I have been embarassed of most of my life. They are hard to clean and painful when I eat and they ache sometimes. Are dentures a good option for me? I can’t really afford braces. I was thinking dentures would be a quick, less expensive fix. I’ve been reading about the implants that allow the dentures to snap into place for a better fit and I think that sounds like a good option. Are these a good idea? How long do dentures typically last before a replacement is needed? Please any advice would be appreciated.

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011
Q.

I am 19 years old and I have overcrowding teeth in the mandible .
I want to have braces but I’d like to know
if this would make me lose my third molars or any other tooth as my dentist said that the overcrowding is because of their eruption or dentists can widen my mandibular arch ?
I am a second year student of dentistry but I haven’t taken any courses about prosthodontics yet!

My teeth are overcrowded due to bad dental work. What should I do?

Friday, February 18th, 2011
Q.

Hi Mark,
I am 32 years old andthe dentist I used when I was 13 took the wrong teeth out, I did query this but was advised that when my wisdom teeth grew they would push my bottom teeth forward, this was incorrect.
I now have overcrowded top teeth where a tooth on witherside overlaps my front two teeth and have gaps at the bottom of my mouth, i estimate that a pound coin would easily fit in the gap.
To add to that my bottom teeth front teeth are discolouring with dark brown appearing at the root area.
I have been scared off of dentists for fear of further errors. please can you help ?
Many Thanks
Sarah

Are there any quick solutions for overcrowded teeth?

Wednesday, February 16th, 2011
Q.

In a few months time I’ll turn 18 and feel that my teeth are too overcrowded for conventional braces to align them in a short amount of time (which is why I deeply regret not getting them a few years ago). My smile is the main cause of my lack of confidence in social situations and I feel too embarassed to visit my dentist in regards to fixing it. My top set of teeth are a lot worse than my bottom set as one tooth is a lot further back than the others, causing an overlap. I’ve researched into veneers available on the NHS and feel this could be a suitable option as I want the treatment to be over as soon as possible. I’ve also become more aware of slightly wobbly teeth but am not sure whether this is just a subconscious thought. As it is only the front 6 on the top set and front 4 on the bottom set of my teeth that aren’t aligned, I’ve also looked into the 6 month smile braces but it all seems to good to be true. What do you think is the best option for me?

I am a mature student and my teeth make me feel depressed – can I still get treatment on the NHS?

Tuesday, January 11th, 2011
Q.

Hello, I have just turned 19 years old and I’v been very self conscious of my teeth for years and even been bullied when I was younger, which led to moving schools, but the bullying still continued which affected my attendence and the choice of going straight to college when I was 16. I have now been in college since September and have recently had some harsh comments made about my teeth by a class member which has really knocked my self-confidence down even more but I really don’t want it to ruin my education this time. When I was 13/14 I was refered to an orthadontist by my dentist where they took an X-Ray and a mould of my teeth and told me I needed an operation to remove a canine tooth which never came through as it is stuck up in the roof of my mouth before I could have braces as there is a chance it could come through later in life, also my mouth is overcrowded and needed a couple of teeth removed at the same time. I could of had the chance to have all this done privatley as I was under 16 and my problem was pretty serious, but I was young and at the time had a strong fear of needles and seriously regret not having it done. As my problem is quite serious, I was wondering if I could have this done on the NHS as I cannot afford to pay thousands to go private as I am only a student, and live at home with my mum who is currently recieving benefits. Also it is seriously effecting my self esteem levels and making me feel severly depressed in myself.
Many thanks.
