How much of base metal showing is acceptable on grinding the porcelain

Friday, March 27th, 2009
Q.
Today I had a porcelain crown put in. In order for the dentist to not have an interference with my jaw closing he had to grind a large amount of porcelain away to the base metal. What are the specifications of doing such a thing. I.E. how much base metal showing is acceptable. I paid a significant amount of money for the crown. Thanks,

Do I need to get a root canal done on a teeth that should be crowned

Monday, March 23rd, 2009
Q.
Hi, I have two root canals on my front teeth which have of course become discoloured I am going to have them crowned. Now my question is my other front tooth, it is healthy but as I call it “bucked” all my teeth are straight other then this one. I was thinking about crowning it but my dentist told me it must be root canaled first, I hate the idea of killing off a perfectly good tooth for cosmetic reasons really. I’m worried that later on I will be regretting this. My other two teeth had to be root canaled due to poor dentistry, I’m alittle worried I really want to keep my teeth : ). Any info greatly appreciated thank you for your time.

My crowned tooth at the front is causing me lot of pain

Monday, March 23rd, 2009
Q.
Hi. I have a crowned tooth at the front and it’s been causing me quite a lot of pain. My son accidently banged his toy into my front two teeth a few months back but my crowned tooth is still sore. It is painful to drink hot and cold drinks. I have been to my dentist this morning and he thinks it could need route canal work doing! Which sounds quite painful! I am on a dental health plan but my dentist says I will need referring to a specialist and could cost £1000. I am very worried. It sounds very sore and what if it does wrong? Will I be left with a gap? Or a plate with a tooth on?

Cap is not fitting under the gum properly

Monday, March 23rd, 2009
Q.
Hi there, I have had 2 dental caps done about 2 weeks ago. However, I had them done in South Africa and currently live in New Zealand. One cap feels as though it is not under the gum properly. Can u please advise me as to what my next step should be? Dentists in New Zealand are very expensive and Iam very paranoid thinking that I will need to redo that cap. Thank You so much for ur help.

There are hairline cracks in the veneers and crowns on my teeth and the dentist says that it is due to grinding

Monday, March 23rd, 2009
Q.
I had veneers and crowns applied to the top 6 of my teeth 5 months ago. My two front teeth are actually crowns. I went in for a cleaning today and the dentist advised me that I have 2 hairline cracks. One on my front (crown) and one on a side veneer. He believes that I’m grinding my teeth at night and that is what caused this. I don’t think I grind my teeth at night. Isn’t it awfully early for me to be already getting cracks in the veneers/crowns? He is replacing both for free but does not know how well they will match the remaining 4 when complete and wants me to start wearing a mouthgard at night.

I have receding gums, my teeth are large, I want a new smile

Monday, March 23rd, 2009
Q.
Can Veneers be an option for me as I have quite severe receeding gums, so much so that I have twice had to have my crowns replaced and they need doing again. I have very discoloured teeth, and they are very large now, due to the gum problem, I desperatley want a new smile, but am unsure which route to take, and cost is a large factor also.

Which one is better Veneer or Crown?

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009
Q.
Hi Dr Patel I am about to have a crown fitted on a front tooth but am concerned whether this is best treatment. My front tooth is halved horizontally due to childhood accident but is still strong and the nerve still alive. My dentist recommends a crown (though originally proposed a veneer). The reason I’m getting dental work is that original cap (only fitted to bottom half of tooth) has now discoloured as I’m 38 and had original Crown at 10 yrs old. So it’s an aesthetic replacement. My teeth are in excellent condition and are very strong. What would you recommend? Veneer or Crown? My concern is weakening the tooth by filing away for a crown when I know the top half is strong and nerve alive. Regards
