How much of base metal showing is acceptable on grinding the porcelain

Q. Today I had a porcelain crown put in. In order for the dentist to not have an interference with my jaw closing he had to grind a large amount of porcelain away to the base metal. What are the specifications of doing such a thing. I.E. how much base metal showing is acceptable. I paid a significant amount of money for the crown. Thanks,

A. Sometimes teeth move during the time the temporary crown is in place.  this can be in a vertical direction and so can require the dentist to adjust the bite.  If metal shows the only issue is aesthetics usually.  On a back crown this usually is not the main issue – rather function and longevity.  However if you are not happy contact your dentist to discuss this matter with them.
