I’ve Had Severe Pain In My Wisdom Tooth For Three Days But My Dentist’s Isn’t Open. What Can I Do?

Monday, December 2nd, 2013
Q.

I don’t know what to do Dr Hughes. I have had a severe pain in my wisdom tooth for 3 days now, it is making it very hard to get to sleep and its now keeping me awake at night. It’s more painful when trying to eat or drink anything and when eating my tooth keeps breaking away. I have tried painkillers and there not touching the pain. I noticed today that my tooth is growing through the gum but is breaking once it comes through the gum, Half of the tooth is missing and the other half still remains in the gum. I’m in agony and it’s giving me pain all the way down the right side of my face and teeth. What can I do as my dentist isn’t open?

I’m Too Scared To Visit My Dentist After Years Of Smoking, And Now My Teeth Are Discoloured. Will They Take My Teeth Out?

Friday, November 29th, 2013
Q.

Hello Dr Hughes, I hope you can help me as I fear I have a dead front tooth as it is slightly discoloured and feels numb. Also my teeth are going see-through at the bottom. I am too scared to go to a dentist because I fear they will tell me I will lose all my teeth. Please can you tell me what to expect. I am 26 years old and I damaged my teeth with fizzy drinks and cigarettes but the dead tooth is from trauma. I have never had any dental complaints before but again I have not been to the dentist in over ten years.

I’ve Spent A Lot On Dental Surgery And Now My Veneers Are Beginning To Chip. Why Is This Happening?

Thursday, November 28th, 2013
Q.

After an accident with a horse my teeth were pushed back. I had a hard acrylic mouth guard that the dentist inserted to try to get them to re-root & after a yr I lost it & the teeth started getting sensitive. I had 5 root canals. After talking to many people my father decided we needed to do all 6 front teeth & 6 lower ones so that my teeth weren’t different colours. We decided on dental works because they were the only 1’s that would do all top 6 at once then bottom at once so that they were all from same batch so they would all match. They told us they would do top crowns bottom veneers. A few months the veneers began chipping. I was getting upset & spoke w/a few hygienists where they informed me they should have never put veneers on the bottom. 3 yrs has past, they informed me when I talked w/them about them chipping that I would have to pay out of pocket for them to fix issues as they don’t come w/a warranty. Last month a whole sliver of my top front crown come off. Again they said I would have to pay. At this point I decided I would not pay them & go to a different practice. My appointment is n 3 weeks. Yesterday a whole veneer fell off. I contacted them and started explaining all the issues & that after only 3 years my teeth are falling apart. The dentist that did it was no longer with them. They have agreed to see me and see what we can do. I have a feeling they will only put the veneer back on for free. (It fell off in 1 piece which I still have) I am just wanting feed back on if this is normal and acceptable. Why others have said veneers should not go on the bottom. This has just been awful. We’ve spent $18,000, less than 4 yrs later they are falling apart.

I Was Bitten By A Dog Recently And The Gum Line Has Dropped Lower. What Treatment Do I Need?

Wednesday, November 27th, 2013
Q.

Hello Dr Hughes, I’m hoping you can help me. What it is, is my tooth has been wonky since I was a child anyway but recently I was bitten by a dog and the gum line and the tooth has dropped lower and back behind the next one and now I’m struggling to eat solid foods as it’s getting caught. I was wondering if any orthodontic or any other treatment could help as it’s also severely effecting me emotionally too as I’m isolating myself as I’m not used to looking like this and have had nasty comments aimed at me calling me names. Thank you and I look forward to your reply.

I Had To Have Crowns At An Early Age After An Accident. I Don’t Like Them As They Are Bulky, What Would Be Best To Replace Them?

Wednesday, November 27th, 2013
Q.

Hello Dr Hughes. When I was 10 years old I had a accident and killed the nerve in my two front teeth, I ended up having them filled down and crowns put on both. 22 years later I have noticed the tops where my gum line is, looks grey and I have always felt the teeth don’t look natural, they are bulky and bigger than my other teeth. Am I able to get these replaced on the NHS? I have asked a dentist to do them once before and he said they did not need replacing. What is your opinion on this? Thank you in advance for any information you can provide me with.

I Need Veneers To Match Up With My Bridge. What Kind Of Upkeep Do Veneers Need?

Tuesday, November 26th, 2013
Q.

I have a bridge as I broke my two front teeth when I was 10 years old if I wanted veneers what would I do about my front teeth so all my teeth look the same. What price would I be looking at for a full set of veneers. How many visits would I need? Also my bridge is nothing like my teeth were so how would I be able to get a perfect smile? What kind of upkeep do I need for veneers? Do I just brush them as my normal teeth?

I Am Nervous About Having Dental Surgery To Fix My Crossbite. Would Veneers Be Another Options?

Tuesday, November 26th, 2013
Q.

I am 44 years old and have a narrow upper jaw and crossbite, despite having had braces in my 20’s. I am thinking about having SARPE surgery and Lingual braces but am nervous about the surgery and having to live with a metal expander for 3 months followed by a year of orthodontics. Ideally I would like to improve my bite but I am not sure if it is worth it at my age. The main thing that bothers me is my front teeth stick out a bit. Could cosmetic dentistry (say in the form of veneers) offer some improvement? Thanks.

After Having A Crown Fitted I Now Have A Pulsing Sensation Every Time I Eat. Why Is This?

Monday, November 25th, 2013
Q.

I went to the dentist last week to have a crown fitted on my right lower 6. I’ve had root canal on that tooth already so there is no nerve, I’ve never had pain before but I’m now having pain every time I eat and a pulsing sensation all the time. The dentist did have to resize it several times before cementing.  I think it’s still too high as my bite is not the same as it was before. Do you know whether this pain will settle? Or am I just being a wimp?  I hate going to the dentist but I don’t know how to describe the pain to the dentist and I know there should be no pain as there is no nerve! I also keep wanting to grind my teeth. Any ideas on what I can do?

My Daughter Has Lost All Her Milk Teeth And She Has An Overbite. Would She Get Free Treatment On The NHS?

Tuesday, November 19th, 2013
Q.

Hello! I have a daughter who is 13 years old and she has lost all of her milk teeth. She has an overbite, a cross-bite and her two front canines are very crooked. She also wakes up every morning with a very sore jaw. She is happy to have braces as most of her friends have them. I have had many recommendations from family, other mothers and our family dentists. My daughter really has low self esteem and does not like the way her teeth stick out like vampire fangs, so her confidence will really really benefit from braces. She also likes drama and acting so would like to look good for performances. I wanted to know, would my daughter get free treatment on the NHS?
