I Had To Have Crowns At An Early Age After An Accident. I Don’t Like Them As They Are Bulky, What Would Be Best To Replace Them?

Q.
Hello Dr Hughes. When I was 10 years old I had a accident and killed the nerve in my two front teeth, I ended up having them filled down and crowns put on both. 22 years later I have noticed the tops where my gum line is, looks grey and I have always felt the teeth don’t look natural, they are bulky and bigger than my other teeth. Am I able to get these replaced on the NHS? I have asked a dentist to do them once before and he said they did not need replacing. What is your opinion on this? Thank you in advance for any information you can provide me with.

Hello, I’m glad you’ve sought my help. To have these crowns replaced on the NHS there would have to be a ‘health’ related reason – NHS treatment does not usually cover elective aesthetic enhancement. For the very best aesthetic results and materials it’s likely too that this treatment should be done by a private, cosmetic or ‘restorative’ dentist. Best wishes, Dr Mark Hughes.
