I Have A New Crown Which Is Too Long And Feels Rough. Should My Dentist Smooth This Down?

Monday, December 16th, 2013
Q.

Hi, Dr Hughes. I recently had my two top front crowns replaced, when I got home I noticed that the right one was slightly longer on one side. I went back today and my dentist filed the tooth down at the bottom even though he thought it was fine, my issue now is that my tooth feels rough along the bottom and and my upper lip. Is this something he should have smoothed down? I am asking because I felt that he just wanted me out of the chair and that I should not have come back so I don’t really want to call him back. Will it smooth itself over time?

Thank you.

My Dentist Told Me That The Decay In My Tooth Will Not Be Removed Before Before An Onlay Is Fitted. Is This Correct?

Friday, December 13th, 2013
Q.

Hello Dr Hughes, I hope you can help me. I have just been to the dentist and it turns out that I require an onlay. I used to have a crown over the tooth but this is no longer possible. My crown recently came out and contained some of my tooth. The tooth is still live. I have no constant pain although at times it is quite sensitive. I was told that the decay in the tooth will not be removed before the fitting. An impression has been taken. Is this correct? Thank you in advance for any advice you can provide.

I Start Work Soon But I Can’t Have An Immediate Denture After My Extractions. Should I Get A Second Opinion?

Thursday, December 12th, 2013
Q.

I am dentist phobic – and I have gum disease – after visiting my dentist today for a scale and polish which I need to have done before I have extractions my dentist informed me that after I have my teeth removed I would have to wait 1 month before getting a denture. I asked regarding immediate dentures and he said no I would need to let it heal.  Should I go to another dentist for a 2nd opinion about the immediate denture? I start a new job within 2 weeks and will now probably have to turn the job down even though I was made redundant 6 months ago and it is a good job as I cannot do the job with no front teeth!

The Gap Between My Two Front Teeth Has Slowly Begun To Widen These Last Few Years. What Should I Do?

Wednesday, December 11th, 2013
Q.

Hi, I’m 32 and I have a fairly large gap between my two front teeth (4mm) and I’m not really up for braces. Is there a way to fix them with veneers and a rough costing for this procedure. Also is it possible to get payment plans for this type of thing. The gap has been slowly getting worse for years and is really starting to get to me. I also have a front molar and the visible part has broken away, this has had a route canal done on it before. Is there any way of fixing this apart from fishing out the bottom part? I’ve had no pain or infection from this tooth.

Many thanks.

I Notice That I Have A Stain That Has Developed Near My Filling. Why Is This?

Tuesday, December 10th, 2013
Q.

Hi Mark. I have a front tooth which already has a filling in it, but I have noticed where the filling is there appears to be a spot of some sort, like a brown stain on the tooth. Why is this? Does the filling have to come out and treated to be refilled. The filling has been in there for a few years but now I am worried that I might lose the tooth or the staining might spread. I would be most grateful for your help. I have no problems with other teeth but I would like to know why this has happened.

I’ve Noticed A Small Chip On The Bottom Of My Front Tooth. How Should I Fix This Problem?

Monday, December 9th, 2013
Q.

Hi Dr Hughes. I have noticed that I have a small chip on the enamel at the bottom of my front left tooth. It is only noticeable up close but I can also feel it with my tongue. I have read about teeth being filed down and wondered if this would be a suitable treatment as I am worried that the chip may get bigger or that it may be prone to infection. My two front teeth come down quite a bit lower than the rest of my teeth so I think they could be filed without it looking odd. What do you think I should do? Any advice would be gratefully received. Many thanks.

I Feel My Porcelain Crowns Are Too Bulky. Is It Possible To Thin Them Out?

Friday, December 6th, 2013
Q.

Hi, I would like to ask if it’s normal for the top part of a front crown, near the gum area to be bulky? It seems to be interfering with my lip when I close my mouth. I asked my dentist about this and they said it wasn’t possible to thin it out, they are porcelain crowns. I also have a dental bridge used for the crowns on all of my front 5 teeth. I strongly feel it makes me appearance look out of place with the bulkiness. I would like to get them re-done but there’s no way would I pay the amount I already paid for, if the bulkiness can be removed. What do you suggest?

I Have Dental Phobia! My Teeth Have Been Neglected Due To Past Fears. Can You Help Me Fix My Teeth?

Thursday, December 5th, 2013
Q.

Hello Dr Hughes. I have a dental phobia!! Can you help me? My teeth are in a very bad condition and I am embarrassed by them everyday, I worry constantly about my crowns and other teeth falling out, several of them have fallen out and I only have partial teeth in places. I know the time as come to seek help.
I do not have a needle phobia which I know stops a lot of people seeking dental care. My fear is partly irrational and partly due to past experiences. Hopefully you can help me to move forward.
Thank you.

I’d Like To Know If Snap On Veneers Would Be A Suitable Solution For Me?

Wednesday, December 4th, 2013
Q.

Hello Dr Hughes, I hope you can help me. I have got a lot of crowns and bridges which are mixed throughout my mouth but also some of my own teeth in between. Top and bottom, but mostly the top teeth. Am I still able to have snap on veneers? Also my bridge on top of mouth has 4 front teeth shorter than other teeth – Can those 4 teeth be made longer? I also have a crown which has fallen out and not been replaced making bottom of my teeth at the side show through. Thank you for your advice.
