I’ve Been Checked Over Recently And Since Then I Noticed One Of My Gums Was A Blueish, Grey Colour. What Has Caused This?

Friday, January 3rd, 2014
Q.

Hi Mark,
I’ve just been to the dentist to get my teeth checked and cleaned. No apparent issues. I noticed since then one of gums is a really blueish, grey colour.
It was a little off colour after I got a veneer years ago but seemed to improve now it’s really noticeable and I feel really embarrassed over it. I don’t smoke and if it was gum disease, surely my dentist would have told me. What should I do? Do you know what could be causing this? Thanks.
Kind regards.

I Am About To Have Braces And Surgery To Correct An Open Bite. I’d Like To Know If There Are Any Methods Of Curing Tongue Thrusts Also?

Friday, January 3rd, 2014
Q.

Hi Dr Hughes, I’m 17 and I have an open bite. I am about to get braces on in preparation the have the surgery to improve this problem. However one of the orthodontists I visited said he could not help me due to the problem being caused by my tongue (this was before I was considered for surgery). None of the other orthodontists I have seen have mentioned my tongue so I was wondering if I should mention it to them however I don’t want them to be like the first orthodontist and say they can’t do anything about it. Do you know any methods to get rid of tongue thrust? Thank you in advance for any advice you can provide me with.

I Am Unsure Whether To Switch To A Rochette Bridge As My Maryland Bridge Keeps Falling Out?

Thursday, January 2nd, 2014
Q.

Hi Mark.

About 14 months ago I had an epileptic fit where I fell on my face. As a result I fractured one tooth and lost the other.
I began with wanting implants, but could not afford this option. It resulted in having a dental plate which recently led to a Maryland bridge being fitted.
However the bridge has come away three times now. Is there anything else that can be recommended? I have just heard of a Rochette bridge, I am unsure what to do?
Please can you give me some advice. Many thanks.

I’ve Had Different Types Of Veneers Fitted Over The Years Which Keep Falling Off. Why Is This Happening?

Monday, December 23rd, 2013
Q.

Hello.
On my next to front tooth I had a porcelain veneer which only lasted five years. It fell off and I swallowed it! My dentist fitted a composite veneer on an emergency visit which lasted for only 2 years. That fell off and went down the sink. I then had another composite the next day as an emergency which is on now and is horrible. I follow a really good hygiene programme and have visited the dentist every 6 months since the age of 3. I am now 52. Why do they keep falling off? Whatever type I have? I am reluctant to have a high cost porcelain veneer fitted as the fear of losing it is probable. Thank you in anticipation.

I Have An Abscess With No Pain But It Won’t Go Away. Should I Have Root Canal Treatment?

Monday, December 23rd, 2013
Q.

I have an abscess on my upper right teeth no. 6. but there is no pain. I wear braces too. I went to a dentist not for a check up last time because there was a swelling on my cheek already but she said it was normal everything is fine because I wear braces. The next day the swelling got worse and was affecting the right side of my face. I went back to the clinic but to another dentist. She said I have an abscess and prescribed Coamoxiclav 1g and Diclofenac and told me to come back after 5 days for RCT. The swelling on my face subsided but the abscess was still there. I went back after 5 days but she didn’t perform RCT because there was no pain. She just pricked the abscess with a needle and prescribed again another Coamoxiclav 1g and Flagyl. She said if there’s pain after, that she will have to extract it. Now the abscess has still not gone and there is still no pain. I didn’t take Coamoxiclav again. I think I might suffer from an overdose if I did. Also I asked her if she would change the filling of my other tooth because it’s too thin already( 8years) but she just won’t unless it hurts. Was she right? Please help. I don’t want to lose my teeth.

I Would Like A More Natural Crown In Terms Of Natural Feel And Texture. What Procedure Would Provide Best Results?

Friday, December 20th, 2013
Q.

Hi. I have a brief enquiry in regards to a crown I currently have over my broken tooth allocated at my front bottom gum which was placed over after my root canal procedure, which was undertaken about a few years ago, however I’m concerned as I wish to have a procedure where the crown is not distinct and actually feels like my natural teeth in terms of feel, colour and texture.
What procedure would be more suitable solely?
As I am very subconscious about my smile.
I was referred to a specialist as a few years post to my root canal the dentists discovered a lump located directly underneath my broken tooth in the gum, with results suggesting the is an infection which will need to be cleaned but am unsure even with that what the best method of approach would be on this concerning matter.
I’m still researching on what would be suitable to my preference with so many options however I’m sure with your expert advice you will be able to assist me accordingly.

Thanks.

My Tooth Has Returned To It’s Original Sate After Orthodontic Treatment. What Are My Options?

Thursday, December 19th, 2013
Q.

Hi there,

I had braces many years ago but since then one particular tooth has returned to its original state.

I’m 23 now and am wondering what my options are, I guess I’m similar to other people in that the priority is invisible solutions.

My other question is whether the treatments are lessened, quicker, or different if there is one particular problem area as oppose to a mouthful of issues. For example getting lingual braces upon just the small surrounding area of the tooth in question. Any information would be greatly appreciated,

Kind regards.

I Suffer From TMJ Which Causes A Lot Of Pain. Can You Tell Me If Braces Can Fix This Problem?

Wednesday, December 18th, 2013
Q.

Hello Dr Hughes,
I have a condition with my jaw called TMJ disorder (Temporomandibular Joint) this causes me a lot of pain and is very uncomfortable at times I had a MRI scan which showed a problem with my right side it was not explained well what was wrong with it just that when my mouth is closed my jaw doesn’t sit correctly. They explained that I could have jaw wash out surgery but this sounds very painful. Just wondering whether braces would help with this condition? Also I should mention that my front top and bottom teeth are slightly overlapped. Do you do a pay monthly scheme?

I’m Thirteen And Can’t Tell If My Lateral Incisor Is Broken Or Not As It’s Loose. What Should I Do?

Tuesday, December 17th, 2013
Q.

Hey, I’m 13 years old and I don’t really know anything about teeth, but I haven’t lost many baby teeth, probably around 5-10, but my lateral incisor is loose, and I can’t tell if it is broken or not and would like to know if you’ve heard of this before? The tooth is whiter than others, but if I pull it back, its only attached to the back of my gums, but the rest of it, (or the new tooth). If I look at it, where the bottom is, the part that is attached, fits nicely in the hole of the broken part. The tooth is getting looser, but I don’t know if its broke somehow, or if a new ones coming in. Any advice or information on this would really help? Thanks.
