Is There A Cheaper Alternative To An Implant That Wouldn’t Compromise The Health Of My Surrounding Teeth?

Thursday, March 6th, 2014
Q.

I had to have my upper “1st molar” tooth removed due to having a really bad filling done by an NHS dentist where they weakened and killed my tooth causing it to split in half when I was chewing. Since having it removed I haven’t had anything put in to replace the tooth. However I have noticed the lower “1st molar” has started to rise up as it is higher than the other lower level teeth. I am worried if I don’t have something done to replace the upper “1st molar” this will cause me more problems? I wanted to go for the implant however I’m unsure how much it will be and do not think I can afford to do that at present and was wondering if there was an alternative that wouldn’t affect the health of my other surrounding teeth?

My Crown Keeps Falling Out. What Can I Do If The Gap Is Too Small For An Implant?

Thursday, March 6th, 2014
Q.

Hi Mark. I have a small crown next to my front tooth which I have had for nearly 20 years, which keeps falling out. I have been told the gap is too small for implants or screw in teeth. What are the options I have? If I have to keep it what is the best way of making sure it stays attached to my other teeth as it is very embarrassing.  It is right at the front of my smile. It has been stuck in with cements three or four times but they don’t seem to be able to secure it. Thank you for your reply in advance.

I Have Been Offered Two Different Brace Treatment Types And I’m Not Sure Which To Choose?

Wednesday, March 5th, 2014
Q.

Hi. I’m getting invisible braces soon and the dentist has offered 2 types. One is the fast braces system and the other involves tooth removal & this is the one I’m not sure of & would like your opinion on please. I had a canine removed years ago (it was above the gum & next 2 teeth joined so dentist just removed it) the dentist doing my braces wants to remove the other canine as he’s saying I now have an extra tooth & it won’t look symmetrical. I’m not sure I want this though as it’s a perfectly healthy tooth & I don’t want to be left with big gaps. Do you think this sounds right? I hope you can help me by offering some advice. Thank you.

I Recently Bumped My Tooth Which Has Started To Wobble And Is Hurting A Bit. What Options Do I Have?

Wednesday, March 5th, 2014
Q.

Hi Mark, I’m 14, and recently I bumped my big adult tooth into something, it seemed a bit wobbly so I became sort of paranoid and began to wobble it. It gradually became looser but it’s not too loose. It’s also hurting a bit. Would I be able to go to my dentist and get brackets to support my teeth because I’m really desperate to get it fixed? I really want there to be another option so my teeth can stay in place. Is there anything I could do to stop in from hurting? Thanks, I hope to get some advice from you.

What Would Be The Best Type Of Treatment To Close My Gaps? I Fear That My Teeth Will Continue To Shift If I Don’t Do Something About It?

Tuesday, March 4th, 2014
Q.

Hi Mark. My lower incisors have a 1-2mm gap between each one. The teeth are in good condition, not crooked, none missing and no chips. What would be the best type of treatment to close the gaps?
The gaps have become more and more noticeable over the year and I fear that the teeth will continue the shift if I don’t do something about it.
I have read about Invisalign and was wondering if I would be a suitable candidate? I would like to know how long it takes to work and if they need adjusting over time. I look forward to receiving your advice with regards to this.

Is £2000 Too Excessive For A Bridge? Is There Anything Else I Could Have In My Price Range?

Tuesday, March 4th, 2014
Q.

Hi. My dentist has quoted me £2000 to have a bridge fitted for (2 teeth). This seems excessive. He told me it’s not available on the NHS. I have a gap that is awful and it affects my smile and my confidence. I currently have a false tooth plate with 2 teeth on, but the teeth keep breaking off the plate. I can’t afford this as I only work part-time, I am a carer for my husband. Could you please advise as it’s really getting me down.

I Am Worried The Swelling Near My Tooth Is Affecting My Swallowing. Does It Need To Be Drained?

Monday, March 3rd, 2014
Q.

Hello Mark. After fracturing my tooth, I had root canal treatment recently. I still have severe pain around the tooth and swelling of my jaw, under my neck and difficulty in swallowing. I am on antibiotics, amoxycillin and metronidazole. I am requiring frequent painkillers [nuramol and codeine and paracetamol]. If I have a dental cyst/collection of pus, does this need to be drained or will the antibiotics remove the pus cells?
The swelling is large and painful and I am worried that the swelling will make swallowing and possibly breathing difficult.
Thank you for taking the time.

My White Fillings Feel Bulky In My Mouth. Can I Have Them Safely Removed?

Monday, March 3rd, 2014
Q.

Hi. I recently had two front teeth filled with white filling and I’m not satisfied with the results. It feels bulky in my mouth, and I can feel pressure dragging down on my teeth constantly. There is also pain in my gum, right above the middle between the two teeth.

Can I safely remove them and have my original shape back? If the dentist has only “smoothed” the surface of the chipped tooth, does this mean my original tooth is shorter in length or not? I am very stressed about this, it has hugely impacted my mood and I wish I didn’t do it. If they fall out, do I have to replace them or not and do they stain over time?

Thanks.

My Orthodontist Wants To Remove My Braces But I Think It’s Too Early. What Should I Do?

Friday, February 28th, 2014
Q.

Hi Dr Hughes,
I am currently fitted with braces to straighten my teeth before I have an implant to replace a missing upper front incisor.
I have been fitted with the braces for 3 years as my teeth had moved forward into the space of the missing tooth, although I was fitted with a Maryland bridge.
My orthodontist wants to remove my braces but I do not feel the top teeth are straight yet. The top incisors all look splayed forward and at an angle. Almost as if they have been pulled into position by the bands I wear, but then not turned straight again. Also my remaining front incisor overlaps the centre line. Does this seem right to you?

Is It Possible To Pay For Implant Treatment On A Monthly Basis?

Friday, February 28th, 2014
Q.

Hello, I’d like to know if I could pay monthly for implants. I’m 38 years now and have had a denture on my front tooth since I was 8 years old due to an accident. Then I ended up with another denture for five on my top jaw, as when I was 16 I had a horse riding accident.  I’ve come to the point were my teeth are causing me to feel depressed and I’m tired of people asking me to smile, it makes me so aware of the state of my teeth as I’ve give up on dentists who fit me bad dentures which in turn have damaged my other teeth. I just want to smile again and your answer would be very helpful. Thank you for taking the time to read my message.
