My White Fillings Feel Bulky In My Mouth. Can I Have Them Safely Removed?

Q.
Hi. I recently had two front teeth filled with white filling and I’m not satisfied with the results. It feels bulky in my mouth, and I can feel pressure dragging down on my teeth constantly. There is also pain in my gum, right above the middle between the two teeth.

Can I safely remove them and have my original shape back? If the dentist has only “smoothed” the surface of the chipped tooth, does this mean my original tooth is shorter in length or not? I am very stressed about this, it has hugely impacted my mood and I wish I didn’t do it. If they fall out, do I have to replace them or not and do they stain over time?

Thanks.

A.
My first piece of advice is to go back to the dentist who placed the restorations and ask for some advice and a solution to resolve your concerns.

If they are unsatisfactory or indeed causing a problem then they can be removed, and in safe hands this can be done with minimal trauma to your teeth. The dentist may or may not have altered your tooth underneath – you should maybe ask that question?

If they fall out you should replace them if the tooth underneath is left in a compromised or unhealthy way. If they’ve been done just for aesthetics and they are quite small then they could possibly be left alone if the bonding falls out, but it’s best to check with a dentist.

They will stain over time – usually a light polish or resurfacing can be done but sometimes if they stain badly over time they need to be replaced. I hope that answers your questions?

Regards, Mark.
