Is there any treatment available for my gum recession?

Monday, March 22nd, 2010
Q.
Hi Dr Caplan, My gumline has been receding gradually for the past 5 years and I have been told by my dental hygienist that it is due to overbrushing (not due to gum disease). My gum recession is quite mild and does not pose any problems, but I do not like how it looks. Is there any natural remedy for my gums to grow back, e.g. any gels I can apply to my gums to stimulate regrowth? Thank you! Cheers, Amanda,

What can be done for gums that are soft and sometimes bleed?

Friday, February 26th, 2010
Q.
I have sensitive teeth and problem gums which are soft and sometimes bleed. Over the years I have regular visits to my dentist and use toothpastes and mouthwashes which help somewhat. I have read Vitamin E oil rubbed on the gums and also used as a mouthwash can help. Do you think it could and if not what would you suggest I do to try and harden my gums more.,

What can be done about bleeding gums and crooked teeth?

Thursday, February 25th, 2010
Q.
Hello Mr.Moore I am quite concerned with the health and severity of the condition of my teeth/gums. Whilst brushing, my gums bleed quite severly, and in some areas have become enflamed and very very sensitive…even though i am using mouth wash. Additionally small food gets stuck inbetween some of my teeth leaving a nasty smell in my mouth. My teeth are quite crooked and are becoming a hastle for me. I am desperately wanting to get them fixed but i do not know where to turn. Thank you, regards james,

Will root canal treatment lessen pain caused by teeth with no enamel?

Monday, February 22nd, 2010
Q.
My 14 year daughter unfortunately had her four back teeth come through with no enamal on them, about 3 months ago we had to have a root canal treatment on one of them. She is now in pain again and the dentist has recommended that they try root canal treatment again, the tooth is crumbling away, and she is on anti biotics to try and clear the infection she also has a phobia with needles and dentists! Is another root canal treatment likely to work for her, or would it be best to extract the tooth? This is not an option that she wants as she does not want a gap in her teeth, but the pain she went through last time for it not to work, how many times will they try and do root canal before they say to extract it. Many thanks,

Should i opt for a bridge or implants?

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010
Q.
I have a temporary bridge from 7-10 and had bone graft 7 months ago in 8 & 9 done by an Oral Surgeon in preparation for implant placement. I have lost teeth 8 & 9 a long time ago and had a lot of gum recession. My prosthodontist has referred me to a periodontist because my gums on tooth # 7 has been really red the past few months. The periodontist said I need crown lengthening. She doesn’t recommend placing two implants in teeth 8 & 9 due to esthetic reasons. I am confused because my Oral Surgeon wanted to place implants. Should I just have the bridge done at this point? Thanks.,

What can be done about my gum recession?

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010
Q.
I have now for 4 years been suffering with receeding gums and feel as though my dentist is not giving me the suport I need as I am on his books as an NHS patient, and if I went to him as a private patient I would be treated better. All he has said to me is that I must concentrate on cleaning and not getting stressed too much as this is a big cause of gum recession. He has now taken 4 teeth out at the back as he said we no longer need them and wants to take a further 4 at the opposite side out. Said this will aid healthier gums, but looking at your profile you has said that implants and bridges are need to aid healthier gums. Where do I go, I have asked him take them all out as I do not want to be in a position where I have no gums left to hold in dentures when the time comes that I have no teeth left to take out anymore. The more I stress about this the more I feel that the problem is getting worse. I need help.,

Is gum disease root cause of my problems?

Thursday, January 21st, 2010
Q.
I have just been diagnosed with advanced gum disease. I am 39. 6 years ago I had a child and subsequently was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. The gum disease has accelerated amazingly in the last 3 years and although the tests appear to show that from taking thyroxine, my thyroid function is normal, I have been arguing that I feel anything but normal. I recently paid for provate tests which suggested I also have adrenal fatigue and recent blood tests revealed the presence of thyroid antibodies. I now also have urticaria – research suggests this could be linked to auto-immune disease. I wonder if all these (and many other small issues including sinusitis) could be linked to auto-immune and whether that has a link to why the gum disease has advanced so quickly……..can you help – I have had a real problem getting the doctors to consider any link – a 5 minute appt will only deal with one issue! My dentist is going to refer me to a specialist but I am concerned that once again I will end up being treated but not dealing with the route cause. Thanks,
