What can be done about my gum recession?

Q. I have now for 4 years been suffering with receeding gums and feel as though my dentist is not giving me the suport I need as I am on his books as an NHS patient, and if I went to him as a private patient I would be treated better. All he has said to me is that I must concentrate on cleaning and not getting stressed too much as this is a big cause of gum recession. He has now taken 4 teeth out at the back as he said we no longer need them and wants to take a further 4 at the opposite side out. Said this will aid healthier gums, but looking at your profile you has said that implants and bridges are need to aid healthier gums. Where do I go, I have asked him take them all out as I do not want to be in a position where I have no gums left to hold in dentures when the time comes that I have no teeth left to take out anymore. The more I stress about this the more I feel that the problem is getting worse. I need help.,
A. It sounds like you may need to see a gum specialist to find out why your gums are receeding, as although stress is a factor, oral hygiene and thorough professional cleaning by an Hygienist or a gum specialist (periodontist) are really the most important things in gum therapy. Why not ask for a referral to a periodontist or, if you are in our area I would be happy to arrange a consultation with my practice’s Periodontist
