Why is root canal so expensive? Is the treatment not available on NHS?

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009
Q.
Hi Dr Moore, I recently had four front caps fall out. I went to theNHS dentist and he said I would either need a denture or root canal treatment the latter costing up to 13 hundred pounds. Is this treatment not availableon the NHS? He fixed the four teeth back in but as one of the posts was broken he said it would only last a short time. Thank you.

The veneer on my two front teeth came off

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009
Q.
Hello. I need some advice regarding a chipped front tooth on the right side. I chipped it some time ago and i went to see my dentist and he said he could fit a veneer for me. He fitted one on the chipped tooth and one on another front tooth because another overlaps it and he said he wanted to make them look at lot straighter. The veneers came off about a week later because he said the two front teeth are not the same size as each other and overlap. One of them keeps pushing the veneer off the fron tooth and he said it is major works and i should ask him about that later because he is not sure what to do. I am really depressed about it and i hate my image because of it. Could you give me some advice about what could be done. I am also a single mum who relys on NHS dental care so what else will they offer apart fronm veneers. Thanks

I have quite advanced periodontitis

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009
Q.
I recently requested a referral to an orthodotist by my NHS dentist as I was concerned about my teeth ‘drifting’. I was seen yesterday by the orthodontist who seemed quite shocked and following an xray went on to explain in clear detail that I have quite advanced periodontitis. She offered to either write back to my dentist or to refer me directly to a local periodontist (and has given me his name). I agreed to the latter due to reduced confidence in my own dentist, and should hear from him soon. My query however, having had time to consider my situation is, why wasn’t this picked up sooner? I have been under the constant care of dentists for many years. These have changed with practice revamps and more recently I switched practices to keep NHS treatment. But none of my previous (or current) dentists have suggested periodontitis or even gum disease. It has only ‘come to light’ because I reqested a referral on cosmetic grounds. I am 40yrs old and have photo’s that show well aligned teeth taken only 5 years ago. In summary, What have I been paying for check-ups for? Should it have been suggested/diagnosed sooner? Do I have any come back? What range of costs can I expect to pay for treatment? Thank you.

I had a root canal done over 3 years ago

Monday, March 9th, 2009
Q.
Hi there, I’m a 23yr old student, I had a root canal preformed by an NHS dentist 3 years ago, who at the time said he could not fill the whole canal, as they were longer than average. Whilst waiting for a crown, the tooth broke into two. Now I have a metal crown and the tooth underneath is constantly infected. I recently went to see a new dentist who said I would have to be referred to a specialist. I’m not sure where to have the treatment, in sheffield, where i’m at uni or in london where I live. Is there any difference in the queality? I’ve been told that in london, if they were to refer me it’d be to the hospital. I don’t know if this makes a difference. Also I’m not sure how much a new crown’d be as I’m not really too happy with my metal one, I’d like one which looked better, but don’t know anything about which ones are better and how much they might cost. Costs are a big part of my worry, both for the root canal to be redone by a speacialist and a new crown to be fitted. I would be really grateful for any information you could give me. thank you

can I have implants on the nhs

Monday, March 9th, 2009
Q.
Hi i recently had a baby who is now 10 months i know i am entitled to free nhs dental care which runs out in May 2009 my question is can i have implants for my missing incisor and what can be done for my creeping front teeth which i noticed recently and when i asked a dentist he said that this is usual as one gets older nothing can be done and in extreme cases the solution would be braces which is expensive and involves pulling out the back teeth i have also noticed my teeth starting to rot at a very fast pace what can i do ?

I am 26 and my mouth is a mess

Friday, January 2nd, 2009
Q.
I am 26 and my mouth is a mess. I was a meth addict for 10 years and it destroyed my teeth. Over half of my teeth are broken and down to the gum line exposing the root. There’s not one tooth in my mouth intact. I am in so much pain everyday and have been for 2-3 years. I am so ashamed i don’t have any confidence and am constantly reminding myself when around people even my husband to turn my head away or cover my mouth so they can’t see my teeth. After the birth of my 4th child i was diagnosed with CHF i have to take 5 different meds daily for life. My dr said me being so young the meds could strengthen my heart but unless i get these teeth out of my mouth i can’t get the full benefit of my meds. I also believe once a dentist sees my mouth he won’t want to bother because it’s going to be so much work to remove them i need to get this done ASAP my husbands insurance doesn’t kick in for 30 days Do u think an oral surgeon will go ahead and start on my mouth and accept payments or do i need to wait until insurance kicks in

Q.
Hi there, at the present moment im an nhs patient and im wanting my teeth sorting out i wont smile when people look or talk to me, when i chew i cant use my front teeth as they dont meet up with my lower ones, they go over the top, ive askd my dentist what i can do and she just said leave them alone as your gums are not 100% perfect but ive had terrible gums all my life and nobody has said anything about in the dentistry, she also said ive got too many fillings for anybody to even assess me, how can she judge a person by this, my old dentist said the reason why ive had 2 have these fillings which were my 1st ever at the age of 26 was because of my pregnancies the babies took all my calcium from me and put veneers on my upper left 2nd n 3rd and my upper right 2nd n 3rd teeth, im 39yrs old now and my husband goes mad at me when we have family get togethers as im always behind the camera, we didnt even have wedding pictures done beacuse i wont have my photos taken or anything, please can you give me some advice as to what i could do, i dont like locally to your surgery but if i have some advice then i may be able to do something as im getting to be a recluse because of this and cant even find a job… please can you email me back thanks

I have known for a while I will need braces

Wednesday, December 10th, 2008
Q.
Hello, I am 17 years old, and I have known for a while I will need braces. i go to an NHS orthodontist and have a removable brace. However, I have been told I need to have four teeth out. This is a big problem for me because I am terrified of needles and having the teeth pulled out. I have tried to have the teeth pulled out four times, twice under sedation. I would like to know if there any braces which I could have which would not need any teeth pulling out, as I would love to have straight teeth. Thank You.
