I Have A Hole In My Tooth And My Gums Hurt. My Dentist Is Fully Booked, Should I See My GP?

May 28th, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Hughes. I have a question for you. I have a very painful tooth and gum, which is currently preventing me from eating properly. I can’t get an appointment with my dentist at the moment. He suggested that I take Ibuprofen but it is not making any difference. What else can I try/use? I do have a hole in the tooth which has been there for a very long time. I don’t think I can wait for 2 weeks to see my dentist, do you think I should see my GP?
Thank you for your reply in advance.

My Teeth Turned Bad And I’m Paranoid About The Way My Fillings Look. Will The NHS Pay Towards Treatment?

May 28th, 2014
Q.

Hi Dr Moore. I’m 19 and I really want perfect teeth but I have had problems in the past where my teeth have gone bad and I had to have fillings and now I’m paranoid about the way they look and it really upsets me. I would like to know the cost for permanent dentures all around my whole mouth and I don’t want to be able to move them I just really want a perfect set off teeth. Does the NHS pay for this or help towards payment? Thank you. I’d really like some advice.

Would A Private Dentist Provide Me With A Well-Matched Set Of Partial Dentures? I’m Not Sure About My NHS Dentures.

May 28th, 2014
Q.

Hi Mark. My dentist tells me that NHS partial (2 front teeth) denture faux gums only come in one colour.
My old NHS dentures matched my gum colour.
He keeps telling me that my new dentures should look like my own teeth “should” look.
I have already paid for these teeth though I haven’t yet accepted them.
Should I ‘lose’ my fee and invest in private? Would a private dental technician be able to provide a well-matched set of partial dentures? I no longer care whether they fit well or not. I want the dentures to be unnoticeable to other people. My friends are amazed that all my teeth are not my own.

My Dentist Is Too Busy To Replace My Old Crown. Should I Try Another Dentist?

May 28th, 2014
Q.

My very old crown has fallen out and my dentist intends to restore the tooth and install a new one. He says this has only a 50% chance of working and cannot start work for some time as he is too busy to start now. It is covered with some white protective material at the moment; I am worried that the long wait to start mean deterioration underneath. He has given me three appointments so far but it will take some time to all be completed. The tooth I’m referring to is my upper left premolar. Should I wait that long or should I try another dentist? Thank you for your time.

Some Stitches Came Out After My Dental Implant Surgery. Will This Lead To Problems In The Future As They Heal?

May 27th, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Hughes. Shortly after I was fitted with 2 implants plus bone graft (artificial) just 5 days ago, I discovered on the swab provided immediately after surgery that some of the stitches had come out. Could this be the reason why I can actually see the implants? And could this be a problem as regards future treatment and the healing process? Also what is the likelihood of the procedure being completed by mid-September? Thank you.

I Have A Small Crack On The Tooth Adjacent To My Filling. What Treatment Can I Expect When I Go For My Appointment?

May 27th, 2014
Q.

Hi Dr Moore. I hope you can help me. I have previously had a filling to my right upper second molar some years ago. It now seems that there is a small crack on the medial aspect of that filled tooth adjacent to the filling. At the moment it doesn’t cause me any problems, pain or sensitivity, etc and has been like that for a number of months. I am due to have an appointment with my Dentist, but I am wondering which treatment I am likely to expect? Many thanks. I look forward to your reply.

I Had Dental Phobia As A Teenager And Now I Need To Fix My Gummy Smile. Is This Even Possible?

May 27th, 2014
Q.

Hello Mark. I lost teeth on the left side of my jaw due to serious dental phobia when I was a teenager. I had implants about 14 years ago and I am happy with them, the only issue is cosmetic – I have a gummy smile and due to loss of teeth on the left, the gums have shrunk, but not on the right side where I still have teeth, making my smile asymmetrical which makes me feel very self-conscious. Also the bridge over the implants is a different colour from my teeth on the right jaw. Maybe a more appealing and cosmetic bridge over the implants could make a difference? Thank you for taking the time to reply to me.

I Was Wondering If A Bridge Would Work For My Misaligned Canine?

May 27th, 2014
Q.

Hello and thank you for your time. I have a question about bridges, I don’t know anything about them really but I have my two central incisors then either side of them my lateral incisors are behind and then I have a canine tooth sitting high and misaligned. I was wondering if tooth removal and a bridge would be a good choice for speed of treatment? I do not wish to have any type of brace/orthodontic treatment to correct this? Anyway, thank you very much.

Can Fixed Braces Be Attached To Porcelain Veneers? Replacing The Veneers Would Cost Too Much.

May 23rd, 2014
Q.

Hi Mark. I have four porcelain veneers on my upper front teeth. Due to gum disease my upper right lateral incisor is moving my central incisor forward. I am hoping orthodontics treatment will help. I am interested in the six month smile fixed brace over Invisalign as it’s less complicated to manage daily. My only concern is whether fixed braces can be attached to porcelain veneers because the cost of replacing veneers is £800 each. This is more than the cost of the fixed brace treatment! Please could you help with this query; can fixed braces be attached to porcelain veneers without damaging them? I thank you in advance.

My Old Bridge Has To Come Out Leaving A Gap. Can You Give Me An Idea Of How Much Implants Cost?

May 23rd, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Moore. On my last visit to the dentist they said I would have to have my old bridge removed as there is a gap now between the tooth and the gum. It doesn’t bother me at all but they said it will have to come out. That will mean I’ll have a gap on either side of my mouth where the two at the back teeth used to be. They said a plate would be an option but I would prefer to have permanent teeth implanted. Could you give me an idea how much they cost? And if there are any other options available to me? Thank you.
