Wil NHS fund my implant and braces treatment?

Friday, February 12th, 2010
Q. Im a 21 year old male student, from the age of 12 i have had a crown on one of my top front teeth. Having had many problems from a young age with excesses operations performed by dental students within the london hospital (some leading to complications). Due to this when having my last crown fitted at hte age of 15 i asked to be sedated, when awake i was quickly rushed out with out seeing my smile.. my current crown it is out of line and cuts my mouth regularly when sleeping. It doesn’t meet my gums and leads my mouth to bleed, the back to the crown doesn’t touch my gums (to the point i can get my tong into the gap) my current dentist has confirmed i don’t have a gum infection, more the crown is causing the problems. i have been recommended to look for a implant and braces. Due to the complications and past problems with all past work being undertaken with the NHS i was wondering if there would be any way the NHS would partly fund the work.. also how long would the work take? and a average cost?,
A. I doubt you will get implant dentistry on the NHS, however you could try to ask your dentist to refer you back the The London. As  past patient they may be able to do something for you

I am scared of dentist but need dentures – can you advise?

Thursday, February 11th, 2010
Q. I have recently been in touch with the Gentle Dental Office in Germany and had an initial consultation. I have been advised to have all of my top teeth removed and replaced with dentures and the majority of the bottom removed, leaving some to “anchor” the bottom dentures. I have been told that the “vertical” needs to be significantly increased as there is not enough space. Please could you explain what this means and how this can be achieved. Will I have to pay for this privately or can it be done on the NHS. I have not visited a dentist in 29 years because I suffer from dental phobia. I now want to contact a dentist in the Midlands area for a second opinion, but haven’t quite plucked up the courage. I need to get my problems sorted now and it is making my lie a misery. Please can you help? Thank you,
A. As your teeth wear and are lost the distance between your upper and lower jaw gets closer.  Opening the vertical simply means placing teeth/dentures etc back to get your jaws back to their original position.  The denture work may be able to be cnvered on the NHS

What is the cost and process to have a bridge fitted?

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010
Q. I had a front tooth bridge fitted with one metal wing(because i have a gap) and it came out a few weeks ago. I had this done under the nhs because i was in college. I am now at work so i guess i have to pay for it being fixed. Will they have to send the tooth away to get the metal taken off so they can stick it back in? My main worry is how much is this going to cost? The fixture of my bridge? what is the process they will go through and how long will this take because my appointment is on the 5th feb and i want it completed and the bridge stuck back in my mouth by the end of the month because i am going on holiday. thanks for you help,
A. It is difficult for me to give you guidance on your bridge matter without seeing you in person. I would be more than happy to see you regarding this.Justin glaister

Is there a special student fee for braces?

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010
Q. Hi, im 16 years old and am a student attending college and i am need in a brace are the invisible bracer/ smaller type braces free as a student or are they cheaper ?,
A. Thanks for your questions, the invisible braces are not currently available on the NHS. In order to discover whether you would be able to get a discount on this treatment as a student, you would need to contact your local providers individually.Kind RegardsDr Kailesh Solanki

Can I get implants on the NHS?

Monday, February 8th, 2010
Q. Dear Doctor Moore,I have been on incapacity benefit for sometime now due to several illnesses mainly diabetes related. One condition that I have is epilepsy which I have had for 34 years. One medication that I have been taking for this is phenytoin. This has caused my gums to shrink, and as a result I have now lost all of my teeth.I am now on my third set of dentures due to my gums constantly shrinking. Is it at all possible to have just a few screw in teeth on NHS,rather than having new dentures made on a regular basis,as the cost of new dentures are always needed has to be dearer in the long run.I just want to be able to eat some decent food instead of being in a viscous circle all the time. Please advise me what to do next.Thank you.,
A. I’m sorry but I doubt you will find it possible to get implants on the nhs Your best bet might be to ask your dentist to refer you to a dental hospital

Why can daughter not get crowns on NHS until she is 18?

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010
Q. My 17 year old daughter has been told she needs to have several crowns fitted, due to decay. However, her NHS dentist refuses to fit them until she is 18 or 19. Is there any reason they cannot be fitted now?,
A. It is normal to wait before placing crowns but a year might not make a difference. It might be worth asking him if he can bring the appointments forward.

Should I stay with NHS dentist for crown treatment or go private?

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010
Q. I am registered with an n.h.s. dentist who is practicing in a verymodern surgery. I am considering having my front crowns replaced (maybe 6) after about 20yrs. He has quoted me £400 each for Procera replacements which will obviously be private treatment. What I would like to ask is would I get better results if I went to a private dentist or is he just as qualified even though an n.h.s. dentist. Does being an n.h.s.dentist mean he’s not competent enough to be in private practice yet because I don’t want him practising on me. Thanks in anticipation of reply.,
A. hi the nhs limits treatment options so it can be likely that a dentist who predominantly practices on the nhs is less experienced with pro cera crowns.ultimately experiance counts for a lot whether he is nhs or private, just because a dentist works on the nhs it does not mean he is not capable it can be a career choice as dentists who want to be progressive with their patient care cannot do that on the nhs.

What treatment is available for receding gums?

Thursday, January 28th, 2010
Q. Hi, I have recently been noticing a speedier retrace of my gumline lately – i don’t know if this has been impacted upon by my regime of brushing my teeth after every meal! I am very stressed at the moment, and on the one hand glad to learn of gum grafts being an option to this ailment but on the other very concerned at the average cost of £300 per tooth. My question therefore is this how does someone pay for a ‘gumline’ which is in jeopardy as opposed to just an individual tooth? Are there any optional routes to explore via the NHS and would they (the NHS) contribute towards the cost of a gum graft. Kind Regards,
A. Gum grafting isn’t generally available on the NHS. It might be that you’re over brushing your teeth causing this recession. As a guide our Periodontist reduces the cost if she is doing several grafts on the same patient so it works out less than £300 per toothRegards  andrew

Would braces be done on NHS or private?

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010
Q. I visited a new dentist for a check up today and they are refering me to an orthodontist. I am 22 and still have a baby tooth, I have been told that my adult tooth has come through but under the skin at the roof of my mouth. They told me that I can have an operation to pull my adult tooth through but then I would need a brace. Do they do this on the NHS or would it have to be private? The tooth causes me discomfort and it looks horrible. Thanks,
A. It should be clear from the Dentist what the costs will be and whether the fee is NHS or Private. The practice receptionist should be able to help.

Can NHS treat discoloured teeth at cheaper cost?

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010
Q. Hi, I am nearly 30 years old and had 6 veneers put on my front teeth 15 years ago by the NHS. The reason they put them on was due to my teeth being discoloured after being giving flouroide drops as a baby. They now badly need redone. I have looked into going private but at £500 per tooth would be unable to afford this. Do I have any chance of the NHS doing them at a cheaper cost considering it was them that put them on in the first place?,
A. No its doesn’t work like that, you could shop around though to find out if another dentist might be cheaper.

A. From the information given it is likely that you would not qualify for NHS treatment for a cosmetic replacement. Interest free loans are available at some practices to fund this type of treatment.Rob

Should I get ortho treatment with NHS or private dentist?

Monday, January 25th, 2010
Q. Hi there i was wondering if you could help me. I have recently started the process of orthadontic treatment. Im 22 years of age with an overbite. I recently saw a private orthadontist who advised me that i would need corrective jaw sugery to bring my top jaw back and move my lower jaw foward. But this would only be possible for me to do through the NHS rather than going private. I just want to know if i stayed with the private orthadontist and had my teeth straightened would i then be able to look in to having the sugery done?,
A. This would need to be carefully managed with your orthodontist and the oral surgeon who will carry out the jaw surgery.  You will need to discuss with your orthodontist whether he can treat you privately whilst you have the NHS carry out the surgery.

Friday, January 22nd, 2010
Q. Hi, I am 29 weeks pregnant and have had to have my upper 6th tooth removed today. I had the same on the other side removed a few years ago and this has really dented my confidence. I am currently seeing an NHS dentist for free treatment but am too shy to ask if I would qualify for a bridge at NHS prices as I can definitley not afford maximum price. Are you able to tell me if this could be a possibility please?,
A. Yes it is possible for you to have a bridge placed in this gap under the NHS. Kind regardsDr Justin Glaisterwww.umbrellasmiles.com

How do I go about being treated at a dental school?

Friday, January 22nd, 2010
Q. Hello Dr Glaister. I would like to ask about something you said in another of your answers. A woman asked about implants and you said “Given the situation it may be worth contacting your local dental hospital as your treatment may well be able to be carried out as part of their teaching programme” Do all dental hospitals offer this kind of treatment in a teaching scenario? If not how would I go about finding a hospital that would consider me for treatment ubder their teaching program, and who would I contact there (which official would deal with such requests) ?,
A. You would have to have a referral from your NHS dentist, however you should be aware that these teaching places are rare and there may well be a lengthy waiting list.Kind regardsDr Justin Glaisterwww.umbrellasmiles.com

Will NHS pay for some of costs of dental treatment?

Friday, January 15th, 2010
Q. I have recently had a set of intermediate partial dentures fitted, then in three months my dentist has suggested fitting a set of flexible dentures. Under the latest NHS dental agreement is it possible to offset part of the cost against the NHS and pay only the extra costs involved?,
A. This is not allowed on the NHS – treatment wither needs to be private or NHS but not a combination of the two
