Why Is My Tooth in So Much Pain?

Friday, January 30th, 2015
Q.

About a year ago I had a filling replaced. When the numbness wore off I suffered intense shooting pains in that tooth. The dentist filed it off, telling me he’d left one corner too high. But it did not work. So they told me it was the new white filling and replaced it. I still had the pain. So they decided that when they’d replaced the filling, they must have opened a nerve ending. I had root canal done, but still suffered the pain. I went back and had a second root canal, which stopped the intense shooting pain, but has left the tooth extremely sensitive to heat. I can’t eat or drink anything over body temperature on that tooth. Cold temperatures give me a similar problem. It’s not sore while I’m eating, but when it warms up again that’s when I feel it. It feels like it’s deep in my tooth, not just a surface pain, and extremely sore, like a dull ache, not sharp or shooting. They gave me antibiotics and a mouth guard, telling me I grind my teeth, but 6 months use of the guard and I still have the same level of ache. Do you have any idea why this might be? I’ve lost all confidence in the dentist, as before the original replacement filling, I had no pain what so ever. I feel they caused this.

I Suffer Badly From Toothache. My Dentist Thinks It’s Tooth Sensitivity. Should I Get A Second Opinion?

Tuesday, October 21st, 2014
Q.

Hi Mark. I went to dentist today due to suffering badly from toothache! I was told I grind my teeth in my sleep as my front teeth are very worn! He X-rayed and sent me away with sensitive toothpaste as he is sure it’s sensitivity! However tonight I am in complete agony is this normally for sensitive teeth? I have taken painkillers but they haven’t helped! I don’t know whether a second opinion might be useful although I have never had any concerns about my dentist before. Thank you for your time.

After Cracking A Tooth I Didn’t See The Dentist For A Long Time. Now The Root Canal Treatment Hurts. Is This Normal?

Monday, June 30th, 2014
Q.

Hi Mark. I am looking for a bit of expert advice as I am a bit weary of the dentist I have been using. I cracked my tooth and left it for a long time. When the pain was too much I went to the dentist and he said I needed to root canal. I have been going to him for the past 3 weeks and he has inserted a rod in one of the canals but not the others yet. I am in constant pain. I am still on my antibiotics but I keep telling him how sore it is and it is like he keeps dismissing me. Is it normal to be in so much pain? Thank you in advance for your reply.

I Had An Abscess Under A Crown And I Had The Tooth Removed. Ever Since I’ve Had A Throbbing Sensation. Any Idea What This Could Be?

Friday, June 20th, 2014
Q.

I had a abscess under a crown in April. I had to have the tooth out and a denture put in straight away. Ever since I’ve had pain throbbing at some point through the day and night, I went back 3 times and was given antibiotics but I’m still having trouble. I went and had a temporary bridge fitted because I was going on holiday. I had aching and throbbing all week while I was away. I come back and was booked in for the permanent bridge to be fitted, but I told my dentist I was still having pain and they said it was coming from a cracked tooth behind which I have to have filled next month. He then went a head and fitted the bridge. I still wake up with this throbbing and aching, I’m taking ibuprofen every 5 to 6 hours which kills the pain, but this isn’t right. Any ideas what could be causing this?

I Get Pain And Fever Ever Since I Had Root Canal Treatment. Is There Any Reason For This?

Tuesday, April 15th, 2014
Q.

Hi Mark. I have a question I hope you can help me with. I had a root canal on one of my upper molars almost three years ago and I had a metal crown fitted. Now, I keep getting a severe cold, fever or a bad neck. I also get severe pain in that particular tooth for around one week and then the pain goes away by itself. I have been to the dentist for normal check-ups, they have X-rayed it, but they can not see anything wrong. Is there any reason for the pain in that particular tooth and do you know of any solution or remedy? Please help me! Thank you.

I’m Worried I Might Have Pulpitis As I’ve Tried Different Treatments And Gum Is Still Swollen. What Do You Think?

Monday, February 17th, 2014
Q.

I have had problems with the one front incisor tooth since October. I flossed one time at night and I pulled the floss too hard and my gum started to bleed. I didn’t think anything of it but then after that the tooth has been hurting. I’m not sure how long the gum has been swollen but it has slight swelling near that tooth, nowhere else and the swelling has been the same. It also has a lot of pressure there, is sensitive to hot and cold and the gum used to be very irritated, which has only just calmed down now after trying different mouthwashes. I have been to the dentist a number of times and she did an X-ray but couldn’t find anything. I first thought that it was just a swollen gum due to a cut I had on the gum but the cut healed. I have also taken antibiotics twice from the doctor because I was getting constant flu like symptoms since October. I recently went to the dentist again and explained that the problem could be due to a cracked tooth, as food was getting in there causing my gum to swell, which she just put some filling on. She said she didn’t understand why I was getting all these symptoms and she didn’t think the gum was swollen due to the fact that it looked pink and it looked normal but when I feel the other parts of my gums, they feel normal except for this one. She didn’t even do another X-ray just to see if anything had changed since I last had the X-ray. I am worried that it may be pulpitis, as I have read that the symptoms are the same as I’ve been getting. Do you think it could be pulpitis especially since the problem has been there since October?

I Have An Abscess With No Pain But It Won’t Go Away. Should I Have Root Canal Treatment?

Monday, December 23rd, 2013
Q.

I have an abscess on my upper right teeth no. 6. but there is no pain. I wear braces too. I went to a dentist not for a check up last time because there was a swelling on my cheek already but she said it was normal everything is fine because I wear braces. The next day the swelling got worse and was affecting the right side of my face. I went back to the clinic but to another dentist. She said I have an abscess and prescribed Coamoxiclav 1g and Diclofenac and told me to come back after 5 days for RCT. The swelling on my face subsided but the abscess was still there. I went back after 5 days but she didn’t perform RCT because there was no pain. She just pricked the abscess with a needle and prescribed again another Coamoxiclav 1g and Flagyl. She said if there’s pain after, that she will have to extract it. Now the abscess has still not gone and there is still no pain. I didn’t take Coamoxiclav again. I think I might suffer from an overdose if I did. Also I asked her if she would change the filling of my other tooth because it’s too thin already( 8years) but she just won’t unless it hurts. Was she right? Please help. I don’t want to lose my teeth.

I Still Get Pain From Root Canal Treatment I Had Years Ago. Can You Refer Me To Someone Who Can Help?

Friday, November 15th, 2013
Q.

Hello,
I had the first root canal treatment done over 10 years ago now. A few more canal treatments on the same tooth and the adjacent tooth followed as the first treatment has not resolved the pain I was suffering with. I have seen many dentists and some endodontics since then. All of them said the root canal work had been done exceptionally well and they can’t see anything which may cause pain. However I still suffer with an irritating, dull, sometimes pulsating spontaneous toothache and tender gum around them which comes and goes. I was in agony for 2 weeks after my recent visit to a hygienist. It drives me mad. Can you help or refer me to someone who can? Thank you.

What Is The Best Solution For Throbbing Pain In The Maxillary Central Incisors?

Monday, July 29th, 2013
Q.

Hi Doc, I wanted to know what is the best solution for throbbing pain in the Maxillary central incisors with pfm capping and done 2 yrs back on both. I am 26 , have no history of trauma.I had this pain 2 months back , to which the doctors declared my lateral maxillary incisor non-vital supposing it to be acute periapical abcess and did an RCT to it.I had an ortho treatment ( with braces and RCT on 11, 21) when I was 15 with metal capping because my permanent maxillary incisors on eruption were brittle and showed signs of discolouration. Doctors said my mother might have had some medications while she was pregnant with me, due to the reaction of which I had distorted permanent teeth on eruption. Now I have again started to get this throbbing pain on both the incisors for the past 1 month post Lateral incisor RCT , and every doctor I visit says go for episectomy , which I dont want to since there is no gum boil , no mobility in both the teeth , no visible swelling or inflammation, just dull throbbing pain which gets really aggravated during the nights. I have been constantly put on antibiotics for past 2 months , and undergone OPG . Please advice some line of treatment . I donot want to go in for episectomy for sure. Thank a mil!
