The porcelain on my bridge has chipped off

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009
Q.
I had a traditional bridge put in just short of 3 years ago. The porcelain on the middle tooth has chipped off. My dentist says I am responsible for cost of replacing the whole bridge. Is this my only option. Should I be looking to the practice or lab for replacement. They say work is only guaranteed for 12 months is this normal?? many thanks.

Are adhesive bridges suitable for long term use

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009
Q.
Hi, I have a post crown tooth at the front of my mouth at the top and developed a tiny gumboil back in October and have been advised that the root must be cracked and that the prognosis for repair is not good and the only option is to have the tooth removed. Although my dentist can perform dental implant surgery himself, he has recommended an adhesive bridge, and despite my concerns about the chances of it coming loose and falling off in the future he will not have a word said against them. Whilst I would prefer the implant, cost is an issue for me at present and so i am inclined to go for the adhesive bridge, but are these generally only a temporary measure and it could it damage the tooth it is bonded to if it were to come off in the future? I am concerned I wont be able to bite into things such as apples or raw carrots etc without the bridge coming unstuck. Also I am having the bridge fitted straight after the tooth extraction as I said I did not want to be without a front tooth but someone has told me that this is not a good idea. Thanks

Which would you recommend bridges or implant

Monday, March 30th, 2009
Q.
Dear Dr Caplan My 12 year old son has beautiful, straight teeth with no fillings. He’s missing his 2s (on both sides) his 3s have come through in their place. His ‘baby’ 3s are where the adult 3s should be and the orthodontist said the roots are long so he could have them well into his 20s. The orthodontist consultant has insisted leaving them all where they are and just filing the sharp ends off the adult 3s to make them look more like 2s, then using bridges or dentures if and when the baby 3s fall out. We’ve recently moved house, and our old dentist told us that the best final result would be to move the adult 3s where they were meant to be (using braces) with dentures maintaining the space the 2s would have occupied, then bridges or implants when he’s older. Which would you recommend? I’m concerned that my son will have to live with the outcome for the next 60 years and just want to make sure that the course of treatment we choose is the right one. The orthodontist was an NHS one with a long waiting list and a budget, I don’t trust that my son’s end result was his priority – but equally, I’m not a dentist and don’t know if I’m just being neurotic! Whilst I appreciate you can’t make a diagnosis, any advice would be very much appreciated. Kind regards,

Q.
Hi , can you help me with an enquiry, l have just broken my bridge, last time this was replaced paying £500 towards the cost on the NHS. My dentist now says l will not be able to have it done on the NHS due to cut backs. He has quoted me a figure of £2,700 to £3,200. For any normal working class family this is an impossible amount for me to find, is there anywhere l may be able to get this done at a lower price. l live in Sussex Thank you in advance for your time

Monday, March 30th, 2009
Q.
Im 52, hopefully not too late to take care of my very damaged teeth. ive been told for years to get a deep cleaning and ive been scared, so i havent. i brush daily, not alot of flossing. well, first thing, my bridge fell off (5 years old) two teeth underneith the bridge broke. its on now again, but for how long? second, i was told my bone has really decreased. i noticed my bite changing, but thought it was normal, well my teeth are shifting, one is floating according to my dentist. he recommends deep cleaning. i am rinsing with a presectiption rinse, am on antibiotics cause now i have infection above bridge area, and i floss maybe 6 times a day, brush twice. am i too late? HE SAYS less comprehensive is deep clean, most comprehensive is dentures. i dont want dentures. am i doing the right thing, or is it too late for me now.

Q.
I just had a bridge put in last month, but it has yet to feel right, food keeps getting stuck between my gums and bridge, there is a slight gap,and on the inside you can see a gray/pink area where it looks like it should go up further. there was no fitting period, he put the bridge in and cemented it same day. i Feel it just is not fitted right, what do I do to fix this problem. can it be fixed?

I’ve been looking at the possibilities of having a bridge or an implant, but ideally i’d like to save the tooth that i have already.

Monday, March 30th, 2009
Q.
I had a fixed appliance for 3 and half years to correct a number of issues, the biggest of which was an unerrupted upper left 3. The canine was brought into place and then i had a retainer to wear to keep everything in place. I stopped wearing the retainer after 2 years, and very gradually, the canine has been slipping backwards. Its starting to become irritating, not just athetically but also its infringing on the space that my tongue would normally occupy. What would be the best way to correct this problem? I’ve been looking at the possibilities of having a bridge or an implant, but ideally i’d like to save the tooth that i have already. Is there anyway of not having to have another fixed appliance?

re there any options for some inexpensive, comfortable, aesthetically pleasing means of temporarily replacing my front tooth while osseointegration occurs

Monday, March 30th, 2009
Q.
Dear Dr. Andrew, My left inicisor was damaged in an accident years ago, which lead to me having root canal treatment. The tooth was weakened and finally broke in half. The dentist I attended replaced it with a veneer which broke after less than a year. I decided to attend another dentist who advised implant surgery and gave me a ‘smiler’, a temporary denture device encased in a clear plastic container. I find it uncomfortable and especially embarrassing to eat with as all the food becomes caught inside the palstic casing, and it sometimes becomes loose in my mouth. I explained this to my dentist before the implant procedure 6 weeks ago. During the procedure a periodontist attended as well, as my dentist was afraid difficulties may arise while extracting the tooth due to prior root canal treatment. To the end of the surgery the periodontist asked my dentist if he was placing a temporary tooth and he said no. At the time I didn’t realise I would have this ‘smiler’ for so long and also had my mouth full! Directly after the surgery, my dentist suggested that he would proceed with the next phase in approximately 4 months. However on revisiting him a few days later he said it would be at least 6 months, although he confirmed that it could not have gone better. He also said if rushed that some implants fail, but all patients are aware of those risks. (At the beginning of the process when I asked how long he guaranteed implants for he said no one had ever returned to him with one.)I am attending 3 weddings in the mean time, one at which I am bridesmaid in July. The smiler has become somewhat discoloured despite cleaning it constantly and the encased tooth has become loose. I paid a total of €3050 so far (€300 for the smiler and €2750 for the procedure which involved a small amount of bone grafting -which added €250). I have yet to pay for the restoration processs. It seems very expensive from what I have since read, but I trusted the dentist. I also never recieved any payment plan which seems to be advised on this site. Have you any advice on what I could say to the dentist? Are there any options for some inexpensive, comfortable, aesthetically pleasing means of temporarily replacing my front tooth while osseointegration occurs. I really do not want to rush the process, but 6 months with no dinners out and eating privately is very daunting. Also how much should I expect the rest of the procedure to cost? Should I ask again about a guarantee? I have found this dentist very pleasant but vague and reaad up on the procedure myself as he never explained ti to me. I hate confrontation, but I really feel it important to be well informed before discussing it further with him. At this moment in time I am very upset about this. I would be really grateful for your advice. Thanks,
