What would be the cost for repair of chipped teeth?

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

Q. my two top front teeth are chipped and i am concerned they will chip even more is it possible to repair them, will i have to go private and hoe much roughly will it cost, as i am having trouble finding an nhs dentist.

A. I recommend you call around to find an NHS dentist in your area taking on new patients or visit www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk/
If you decided to go down the private route then after your examination your dentist can inform you on the costs involved in repairing this.

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

Q. hi i need a lot of dental work. im 21 and terrified. can you be put asleep in your local nhs dentist?

A.

You cannot go under GA in any general dental practice you would need to be referred to the hospital by your general dentist. Some dental practices however so offer sedation.

Methods for teeth whitening other than veneers Plz advice

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

Q. One of my 15 year old daughter’s front teeth is dark grey. Her dentist says it is as a result of bleeeding inside the tooth, but it is still alive and recommended tooth whitening (smile-x) on just that one tooth. The tooth is not stained; the discolouration has happened inside of the tooth and so I don’t see how whitening the outside of the tooth will help. Is there any method of possibly whitening the inside of t

he tooth? I do not want her to have veneers. What is your opinion? Thank you for your time.

A. You cannot have internal bleaching on a tooth that has not had root canal treatment. I recommend you have this tooth x-rayed and ask your dentist to do a pulp test. If the reason for the tooth discolouration is internal bleeding, the tooth is definately dead. In this case it need to have a Root Canal, you then can try internal bleaching.

Could you plz give some details for resin composite crown?

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

Q. Hi, Dr. Glaister: Dentist said I had a vertical crack in my lower left molar (tooth number 18) in the back of the tooth. It doesn’t hurt although sometimes I feel sensitivity when I chew. He said I should have a crown. I heard the cheapest crown is a resin composite. What is the life expectancy of that kind of crown and can it be done quickly in one visit? Is it different than a metal or porcelain crown in

that they don’t have to grind your teeth?

A. You have to reduce the tooth surface for every type of crown. I recommend you visit your dentit to see what he can offer you in terms of materials and costs.

Plz advice on the rules for NHS dentistry in regards of crowns

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

Q. Hello. I have a crown fitted in the front of my mouth. the gum line has receeded and the crown is now cracked (having been filled down to slim it by a dentist after It took too long to refit it when it dropped out and the other teeth had moved). it looks unsightly and the crown is partially shaven on one of the sides. My dentist says I would have to have a private crown to replace it, as its only a cosmetic problem. however, surely a less than complete crown is a little more than cosmetic. I have also developed a gum boil above the tooth now and I beleive this is becuase the slimmed down crown has allowed food to compact and enter the gum. where can I find a copy of the rules for NHS dentristy in regards to crowns? thank you

A.

I am not an NHS dentist so do not know their rules and regulations. However if your dentist is an NHS dentist he will have an information booklet he can give you or you can look at www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk/

Can I hv dentures by taking out rest of my teeth?

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

Q. I am a 42 year old woman and have dreadful teeth. I only have 13 original teeth left and wear dentures, which i love because they are beautiful and white. My other teeth are full of holes and broken and yellow, Why won’t my dentist take all the rest of my teeth out and give me a full set of dentures. This is what i would really like done and no one will help me! WHY?

A.

You existing teeth help hold the denture in place and make it much more comforable for you to eat and talk. They also retain the bone that stops your gum from shrinking. If you would have the rest of your teeth extracted  I think you would find that the denture would be most uncomfortable and you would have to get it relined frequently as your gum would shrink.
It is also unethical to extrct teeth that are healthy.

My mouth has developed burning stabbing sensation Plz advice

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

Q. Hi Justin – Over the last 5 weeks, I have had antibiotics and used mouthwash constantly to clear up an abscess. On Monday after hygenist treatment, my mouth has developed a burning, stabbing sensation in the gums and also nerve pains in the face. Although now on medication for Oral Thrush, the dentist does not think this is the case. Her feeling is either allergic reaction to mouthwash, or Burning Mouth Syndrome. What do you think?

A. Im afraid this isnt my fiesld, and without assessing your mouth i could not advise you on what this may be. I advise you g

et a second opinion with another general dentist.

Is brushing the teeth after vomiting harmful?

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

Q. I had a person on an ed website ask if brushing your teeth after purging (vomiting) is harmfull to your teeth. Is it or is that a myth?

A. Yes it is harmful to your teeth. This is because with are bringing up acids when vomiting and if you brush your teeth straight after this, this is very abrasive to your teeth.

Can I hv braces though I hv few crowns Plz advice

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

Q. I am 40 years old and have been unhappy with my teeth as long as I can remember, I try having a conversation while covering my mouth with my hand as I am so consicious of my crooked teeth. I would be interested in invisalign braces but I have afew crowns at the back and wondered would this allow for these braces. I would also like an estimate of how much it costs. Although both my top and bottom teeth are crowded, I am more consicious of my top as my two front teeth overlap slightly. Thank you.

A.

You can certainly have braces even though some of your teeth are corwned. Prices of orthodontics depend on the case but in my experience invisilign can be anything from £1500-£5000.
I advise you book an appointment with an orthodontist.

What are my options whether a brace or a veneer Plz advice

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

Q. Hi, i have been searching the net trying to find some info for my problem and hope you can help me. I have one like fang tooth it is positioned higher than my other teeth but only comes down half as far. I was wondering what were my options a brace?? A veneer but then my tooth would still be up too high? Help!

A. onAnswer” >

It sound to me like your case in an orthodontic case. A Veneer cannot pull the tooth sown to align with the rest of them, a brace could do this.
I advise you book an appointment with an orthodontist.

Can I hv denture fitted Plz advice

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

Q. I have had a partial denture for 20years but my upper teeth have got progressivly worse, my left central incisor has twisted and has receeded the gum quite considerably and is very loose, and has left a large gap between the other central incisor, the next 3 teeth on left upper are missing, the final 3 molars have gum recession also and dont look good. The right central incisor is chipped with slight gum recession, the lateral and canine on the upper right seem to be slightly longer and have slight gum recession, the next 2 molar seem ok, mising the 1st molar and 2nd molar seems ok. Also my teeth do have gaps Would it be better to just have them all pulled and a denture fitted as about half are already missing or need to be pulled. . I am 40yo, your suggestions please.

A. It would be impossible to advise you on this for two reasons, firstly I have not seen your teeth and secondly because I do not work with dentures. I recommend you book an appointment with a dentist who frequently places braces and get an scurate opinion.

Is six months braces is suitable or bridges for crowded teeth?

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

Q. Hi, I have severe overcrowding of my upper 4 front teeth. Recently i went to a dentist who suggested the six month brace, however i went to another dentist and she recommended that i have my four teeth extracted and a bridge put in place. This dentist said that the six month smile does not work on teeth which are severley crowded. I’m so confused, im not sure what to believe. I find i just get everyone building my hopes up and then getting blown out the window the next minute! (sorry just had to have a lil rant!) i would appreciate your opinion as to whether six month smile braces are suitable for severe crowded teeth and if not is bridging the next option? Many thanks

A. Certainly do not get the teeth extracted and a brige placed! This is the totally wrong thing to do for something that can be correctly non-invasively. Once a tooth is extracted cannoth be replaced and a bridge last 10-15years, so would be a life time expense as you would have to get it replaced possible quite a few times throughout your life.
If the 6 month brace is not suitable, than there is certianly a brace that can. If you want something invisible then perhaps invisalign may be suitable, if not then lingual brace (these are braces fixed to the inside of your teeth).
I advise you book an appointment with an orthodontist.
If you would like a recommendation, my collegue Dr Darsh Patel is an exellent oerthodontist, offering every brace there is out there, and if you can our team a call on 020 7612 9810 they would be happy to help you.

I hv holes on my teeth after removing braces Plz advice

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

Q. Hi, I would be very grateful if you could advise me. I am 47 years old. Two weeks ago I had the braces removed from my teeth after wearing them for 15 months. I had overcrowding on my bottom teeth and I felt that my teeth protruded on my top teeth. That was my reason for seeking treatment. One of the first things I noticed was that very soon after having the brace fitted my teeth became quite discoloured, yellowish in appearance. I consoled myself that I could have them whitened when the brace came off but was still worried. I told the orthodontist my concerns and he said that he had noted that my teeth were quite yellowish before he put the brace on but I am sure that the colour changed almost straight away. In particular around the gums about a third of the way up my teeth was quite yellow which I had not noticed before. I decided to wait until the brace came off to see if I could get them whitened. Two weeks ago the brace was removed and the bonded retainer applied straight away. He then cleaned my teeth very rigiously for quite some time. When I looked in the mirror in the surgery I was dismayed at the colour. Very yellow and matte without shine. He cleaned my teeth again with pumice and water spray. They looked better but without shine or vitality. Even now two weeks later the shine has not come back properly and the colour is not right. Also to my horror there were little holes at the top of my teeth where they meet the gums. The holes are each side of the tooth next to my two front teeth on each side of my mouth. Altogether I can see three holes on my top row of teeth. This is also evident on my bottom teeth but not so noticeable. The orthodontist didn’t mention this to me or let me know it had already happened. I cant remember seeing them in my mouth when the brace was in either. At the beginning of my treatment I remember him telling me that this can occur but he can correct it by shaving the sides of the teeth to make them closer together. I am so upset. I paid nearly £4500 for my treatment and didn’t expect them to look like this. I think the holes really age me and I am conscious of smiling broadly. This is a lot of money for me. I couldn’t say how disappointed I was to the orthodontist at the time when he first removed the brace as I was so shocked and I didn’t want to come over as criticizing his work. A few days ago I went back to the orthodontist to have an impression made of my mouth just in case the bonded retainer comes out (I think that was the reason for the impression). I mentioned my worry to the orthodontist about the holes but he only said that they may close on their own but unlikely. I am so disappointed. Surely he could have closed the holes during the treatment. I paid nearly £4500 and didn’t expect this to happen. Is it too late for me now. Kind regards

A. I’m afraid this is not my field as i am not an orthodontist.
I recommend you go for a second opinon with an orthodontist and discuss your concerns with them. They can give you a full mouth assessment and advise you from there.
