Why is unfinished root canal treatment causing me pain?

Thursday, March 4th, 2010
Q. On the 5th Jan I had a crown fitted on a tooth that had broken my previous dentist said thet due to age teeth become brittle and she tried to repair it. I change my dentist to one nearer home and they fitted a crown since then I have been back with pain. The third week I went back and root canal treatment was performed. Last week I was due to have the root canal treatment finished but I had pain in my lower jaw and a slight ear ache I asked the dentist to give me some antibiotics ib case there was any infection and could I have the root canal treatment finished the following week which I am due on tuesday. I still have some pain but painkillers help. What should I do,
A. You will need to have the root canal treatment completed as it sounds as though you still have an infection. It is a slow and frustrating (not to mention painful) process, but it is the best chance of saving that tooth. Justin Glaister

Can I get teeth removed and replaced with bridge due to gum disease?

Thursday, March 4th, 2010
Q. i have a large over bite and my upper teeth are very lose. I tried to have my dentist put braces on them but was informed that due gum diseas it would not be a good idea to have braces because i would lose them anyway. Could I have those teeth removed a get a bridge instead,
A. For you to get a bridge in the first place you require surrounding teeth to replace the gap, which the bridge holds on to. I suggest you get on top of your periodontal condition (gum disease) by regularily seeing a hygienist or periodontist and then I would put braces on after your gums are stable. Justin Glaister

Are there any payment plans available for braces?

Thursday, March 4th, 2010
Q. hello, I am 22 yrs old and i need braces, i was wondering if there are payment plans available and also if it is possible to get them on the nhs as i dont earn very much. having crooked teeth is making me feel very self concious to the point where i hide my teeth when talking and smiling.,
A. We have a system at our practice where with each visit, you can pay off £500 towards your treatment until you’ve paid it all. I have no idea about the NHS as i’ve never worked in an NHS practice before, I would try and call up your local NHS dentist and ask them for suggestions. Justin Glaister

What can be done about teeth that are breaking apart?

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010
Q. Dear Dr Justin Glaister, Well, I do not know where to start. Firstly I have to get rid of my wisdom teeth (the pain is killing me), and then I have a problem with basicly all my other teeth. My teeth will start breaking bit by bit, starting near the root, and it hurts badly, I have about 10 teeth that is broken. I could not eat for the past few days and whenever I drink hot or cold drinks it hurts. My dentist in south africa said that it is a shortage off calsium. I had this problem since I was 14 (now 22). I live in Swanage, Dorset, England, BH191AN. Is there any advise you can give me in this matter? Regards,
A. Firstly you will need to attend to your teeth before you start gettting chronic infections in your mouth. Then I suggest that you start using a high fluoride toothpaste – which can be bought from a dental surgery or cchemist. Justin Glaister

How invasive is the veneers treatment?

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010
Q. Dear Dr Glaister I am considering offering to pay for my son tohave his teeth improved.I know the process will be expensive so would like to research carefully. One question in particular concerns the invasive nature of porcelain veneers. What is your view about choosing porcelain veneers over less invasive options in terms of best results. Many thanks.,
A. It depends on what you are trying to achieve in the first place. Does he need tooth straightening or would he like his teeth to be lighter or just for all over aesthetics. This is a difficult questions to answer without knowing what the patient needs/wants. I’d be more than happy to see him for a consultation Justin Glaister

Can you give me some ideas about cost of invisible braces?

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010
Q. Hi, I never had braces as a child and have recently become more self conscious about my croocked/overlapping teeth. I have been looking at the different types of invisible braces, but am concerned about the costs! Could you give me some idea of how much different types of invisible braces cost?,
A. We have a wonderful dentist who does complementary Invisalign consultations and he does so much Invisalign he gets them cheaper than other dentists and therefore it ends up cheaper for the patient. All I know is that for a simple case it costs £1450 and for a full case it is £2900. Not everyone is suitable which is why you need a consultation first. Justin Glaister

Can a mobile tooth be crowned?

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010
Q. what does a dentist have to assess in my mouth prior to having a crown? can you crown a ‘mobile’ tooth?,
A. I would never crown a mobile tooth. A mobile tooth means there is either an infection at the base of the root or that you have gum disease (periodontal disease). Before commencing with a crown I would go and see your dentist about these conditions. Justin Glaister

Should I have veeners replaced due to receding gums?

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010
Q. Hi, I had veneers put on my top 8 teeth about 8 years ago. Over time my gums have receded a bit and there is a visible line between my gum and where the veneer hits my tooth, one of them being a little bit dark. Only on my two front teeth though. I really don’t want to have them replaced at this time if I don’t have to. Is it possible to use white composite to fill the gaps? Will it hurt my dental health if I don’t have them replaced now? I’ve also read that they tend to “pop off” after you’ve had them replaced. Need unbiased advice on whether I should have them replaced or not. Thanks!!,
A. If your gums have receeded over time then I would recommend before you decide on having new ones made then I would use composite resin to fill the gap between the veneer and the gum. I would also advise you see your hygienist to have a talk about why the gums are receeding as this may be an issue that you could bring a halt to with a regular routine. Justin Glaister

Dentures feel really uncomfortable but what can be done?

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010
Q. Hi there i have had top and bottom dentures since the age of 19 and am now 38. I have never had a set that actually fit properly. i recently lost a bit of weight and my dentures were too loose so i went to my dentist on the nhs and got a new set made which are unsuitable. She then made another set which are even worse ie bite feels all wrong, constant ulcers and sores on the bottom gum. She now says there is nothing else she can do for me. I cant even eat with the bottom set in. I am at my wits end and feel so frustrated. Do u have any ideas on where i can go next as i am constantly suffering. I really do hope you can advise me.,
A. The only other option availble to replace a full mouth of teeth are Implants. There are many different ways that this can be done in order to put teeth back in your mouth. Unfortunantly I am not specialised in this area and so I advise you see a Prosthodontist regarding your matter. Justin Glaister

Why am I getting pain in tooth even though I had root canal treatment?

Monday, March 1st, 2010
Q. i recently had a filling done on my front tooth, but because it was too infected had to have root canal. its been 4 months since this and am getting pain forming on this tooth, why do you rhink i am fetting this pain, espacially as root canal has been performed,
A. It sounds as though the root canal has either not been completed (it can sometimes take up to four appointments to complete. Or it wasn’t done very well and the infection has come back. How ever, you will need to go back to your dentist for an x-ray and for them to perform some tests regarding this tooth. Justin Glaister

Do you have any advice about getting my teeth whitened?

Friday, February 26th, 2010
Q. Hello doctor, I am a teenager of 15 years of age and I have neglected my teeth for a few years since maybe the age of 7 or 8 where I only brushed once a day or once every other day and I am ashamed to say that I have only just started to think about doing something about it. This has caused stains on my teeth from a young age which have never gone which leads me to fear that these stains are maybe quite deep. I have started an oral hygiene regime in which I’m using Arm and Hammer Advanced Whitening toothpaste and Plax Mouthwash. My question is therefore, do you have any advice or information concerning what I can do to get my teeth healthier and whiter (especially!) and any specific products that would help my teeth stains disappear? Thanks.,
A. Firstly, to have healthy teeth you need healthy gums. If it has been a while since you’ve seen a dentist then I suggest you go and see one for a full examintion and a clean with a hygienist – who may be able to remove many of the stains on your teeth.. Whitening is an option you may consider after you have had a thorough clean. Justin Glasiter

Thursday, February 25th, 2010
Q. my teeth are in really bad condition and i have lost most of my top set along the sides through grinding in my sleep.im struggling to chew properly and have been using the two front ones for most of it.now the enamel on my front two teeth has started to break down and im worried these two are going are going to snap now.is there a way to replace the enamel with something else or will i need to dentures or implants?im 33 and dont even smile now because its noticable.i only ask about replacing the enamel as money is extremely tight at the moment and the cost of dentures or implants is totally beyond me yet i still dont qualify for nhs dentistry.any suggestions you have would be extremely appreciated.many thanks,
A. It is very difficult to give you any options without seeing you in person regarding this matter. Usually there are underlining issues when it comes to teeth chipping and this needs to be addressed. I would be more than happy to see you for a consultation. Justin Glaister w

What are the benefits of implants?

Thursday, February 25th, 2010
Q. what are the benefits of implants which are available to replace missing teeth?,
A. Firstly, they function like a normal tooth. Secondly, as long as you keep your gums surrounding the implant clean, then it should last anywhere between 25 – 30 years (average). They are the latest in Dentistry when it comes to replacing teeth. Justin Glaister

Is it okay that I took off braces myself?

Thursday, February 25th, 2010
Q. i took my brace off my self and i was woundering if my teeth will go back to they way they was, i still have gaps where i got teeth taken out how do i get a retainer to keep them in shape?,
A. Are you talking about your fixed braces or did you have a retainer/Invisalign? If you have taken off your fixed braces yourself then I suggest you see your dentist asap to remove any of the bond that will be left on your teeth. He/she should then be able to talk to you about retainers for straightening. Justin Glaister
