What can be done about my relapse after wearing braces?

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011
Q.

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could help me please:

I have had braces previously and after wearing the retainer for 12 months 24hrs a day, was told I didnt need it anymore and it was taken back from the dentist. Within three months my teeth were very near to their pre braced state and the four years of braces were wasted.

I have breathing difficulties and breathe out of my mouth and the dentist had a go saying it was my fault and nothing he could do.

Ever since, the healthiness and state of my teeth have decreased, as I am o embarrased and self concious.

To others they may not seem that bad, but like someones weight might get them down, its my teeth that do it for me.

I want to be hapy in myself again and would love to start smiling again.

I am wondering if anyone knows of any trainee orthodontists that require to do this for their exam or something, as I am 20 now and despite being in full time education, I am not sure if the NHS would cover considering Ive had them before (Im pretty sure they wont).

This is not a cosmetic issue as I am not materialistic or girly like that, but this is a really personal thing. I want to help someone to help me and that will encourage me and give me a goal to look after my teeth for.

I hope someone can help me,

Thanks very much,

After brace treatment, my teeth moved back into position, what would you advise I do now?

Q.

Hi, i received braces when i was 12, i have a very bad over bite and it does affect my speech. I had them on the NHS as my overbite was so bad. They offered me an operation when i was 14 but i turned it down due to school etc. Now i am nearly 19, my teeth have gone back to what they were (even after completing the proceeder) . I am looking to get braces again. What would be your advice?

Besides wearing an Essix and bonded retainer what else can I do to keep my teeth in position?

Monday, March 14th, 2011
Q.

Mark, I have some questions regarding keeping teeth straight after orthodontic procedures and would be really grateful if you could answer them for my records!

1) When you straighten teeth and the process is complete, is it realistic to say that you can retain them for life using Essix and bonded retainers? Although I finished my treatment 7 years ago, I’ve noticed that although I wear my Essix retainer 3 x a week, my lower incisors get tender and keep spacing apart back and forth. This makes me really nervous knowing that despite my commitment to retention, my teeth can still move – I like them the way they are!

2) Does the quality of Essix and bonded retainers affect the teeths retention and if so, how can we be sure that we get quality retainers to keep the teeth straight?

3) As many of us live well into our 80’s and beyond, when we have orthodontic treatment when we are younger, can we really only have it done once for life? I don’t really want to repeat orthodontic treatment just because i’m going to get older but like your philosophy I believe a good smile throughout our life is worth investing in so I want to keep mine that way. Can we really keep the same results we get when we are in our 20’s in our 80’s too?

4) As I believe retention is a lifetime commitment, I want to keep my teeth straight as best I can but I know we can’t keep with the same orthodontists for life (as they retire) so are we still able to have retention appliances remade for us by other orthodontists elsewhere down the line of life? What should we do if our teeth do shift and we see a change and we don’t have an orthodontic practice anymore?

5) And finally, is there a way we can stop our teeth shifting apart from wearing our retainers religiously? I know our teeth shift with age but can we really defy the process?

I’m just thinking of the future as my teeth are top priority for me so your advise would be a gem! Thanks

My teeth have moved after having a brace, will I need more treatment?

Friday, March 4th, 2011
Q.

Hi,
Im 21 years old. I had braces for year and half when i was 16 years old.
after braces removal i didnt wear the retainers regularly for a year, then i realized that the lower lateral started to regain its position so i wore these retainers at night for another year..
now i dont use anything and i was wondering if it will keep moving to re-establish its old position? or it will stop at this position? even though it contacts the lingual aspect of upper central and this contact bother me..
also i was wondering if i could remake a new retainer just to keep my teeth at this position regardless this lower lateral?, as i dont want to start a new orthodontic treatment..
thanks

My teeth have relapsed after past orthodontic work, would the Inman Aligner be a good solution?

Thursday, March 3rd, 2011
Q.

Hello Dr. Verma,
I used to wear metal permanent braces about 13 years ago. My bottom teeth are fine but my front right tooth has moved forward over the years and the tooth next to it moving behind it. i read about the inman aligner and thought this could perhaps be a solution. In the last couple of years i have had a wisdom tooth come through on that side and wondered whether you think this would stop me being able to have that type of treatment (the wisdom tooth doesn’t cause any problems).
i appreciate your help and time.
kind regards,

Could my braces have changed the shape of my face?

Thursday, March 3rd, 2011
Q.

I am 29yr old male. I have had braces for 1 yr now on lower teeth with 1 extraction-second molar on my left. This was to correct and straighten my teeth. I am noticing a thinning of my face – making it look narrow. Everyone keeps saying ‘you have lost weight’ but I have not. My ortho says it cannot be braces, as only jaw surgery can change my jawline. I am very worried. Is he right? What can I do? He is moving my back teeth to cover the gap from the extraction. Thank you.

My teeth have moved and now I am unentitled to free ortho, how much will it cost?

Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011
Q.

Hello, I was wondering if it was possible you could help me out by giving me some advice and giving me an idea on what I’m entitled to. I’m 18 years old but in full time education and I had my braces taken off a year or so ago and was given a retainer, within in the 6 months of having the retainer on my current dentist told me to chuck them out as I no longer needed them? Now two of my bottom teeth have overlapped and one of my top teeth has shifted back a little. I’m aware that now I’m 18 I may have to pay towards it, but hopefully not £2000+ as not much work is needed to be done. I was wondering if you could tell me how much it is going to cost me? And if I am entitled to any discounts of any sort due to still being in education.

Many thanks,

I always wore my retainer, but now I have a small gap in my teeth, what can I do about it?

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011
Q.

Hi there,
I previously had braces for my front gap after 5 years of religiously wearing my plastic retainer the gap has re-opened. Is this the most effective treatment for me? i worry this is an awful lot of money for quite a small gap.

Look forward to hearing from you
