Could my braces have changed the shape of my face?

Q.
I am 29yr old male. I have had braces for 1 yr now on lower teeth with 1 extraction-second molar on my left. This was to correct and straighten my teeth. I am noticing a thinning of my face – making it look narrow. Everyone keeps saying ‘you have lost weight’ but I have not. My ortho says it cannot be braces, as only jaw surgery can change my jawline. I am very worried. Is he right? What can I do? He is moving my back teeth to cover the gap from the extraction. Thank you.

Dear Enquirer,
Your orthodontist is right, if you are having teeth moved where the gap was, you will not have any change in the shape of your profile/face. Keep going with the treatment and ask him/her to clarify matters at your next visit.
