I always wore my retainer, but now I have a small gap in my teeth, what can I do about it?

Q.
Hi there,
I previously had braces for my front gap after 5 years of religiously wearing my plastic retainer the gap has re-opened. Is this the most effective treatment for me? i worry this is an awful lot of money for quite a small gap.

Look forward to hearing from you

A.
Thank you for your enquiry.

Unfortunately everyone’s teeth move about all the time, and when you have orthodontic treatments it is common for your teeth to move. However, if you are wearing your retainer properly, this shouldn’t have happened.

An option could be to have a small wire placed on the back of your teeth so that you don’t have to wear a retainer and it isn’t possible for the teeth to move.

I would recommend that you visit your orthodontist or dentist and ask them the best option for you to avoid your teeth moving any further.

Helen Says :

Teeth affect bands are pretty effective in closing gaps naturally if you use them properly. Once the gap is closed, its a good idea to wear a band a few nights a week to retain the results and get another Essix (plastic) retainer made or wire put on the back of the teeth so they don’t move again. Unless your retainer shape has warped (by breaking it or washing it in hot water or leaving in sunlight) your teeth shouldn’t have moved. You need to wear it at least 3 times a week for life to ensure minimal relapses. Once the teeth have moved, it will take more work to put it right so you might as well get into the habit of popping it in your mouth 3 times a week for an easier life. If you can clean your teeth 2x a day without thinking, so can putting in a retainer 3 x a week!
