my 10 year daughter has overbite is there any other alternative than having retainers

Sunday, June 28th, 2009
Q.
Hi, my 10 year old daughter has a 10mm overbite and has been given upper and lower retainers. These are quite bulky, awkward and cause her difficulty speaking – because of their inherent design, she cannot close her mouth fully. I was told that the goal was to move the lower jaw forward, before fitting ‘train tracks’ in 6 to 12 months time. My daughter is shy, and finds these appliances socially very difficult. The only alternative offered was removal of 2 upper teeth and then train tracks, but were we told much better results would be obtained using these bulky and awkward retainers. My question therefore is, is there an alternative to these unpleasant appliances that can achieve the same result?

I have a deep overbite and crowding on my lower teeth can i get it jaw surgery in NHS

Friday, June 26th, 2009
Q.
Hi I am 24 and I am wondering if you can offer me some advice. I have a deep overbite and crowding of my lower teeth. My dentist said it is routine orthondonics and shouldn’t cost more than £3000 or under. She referred me to Birmingham dental hospital and I had an appointment there and was told the problem is not severe enough to get treatment under nhs. He also assured me it wouldn’t be too costly for private treatment. I had a consultation today at a Birmingham clinic and was told I am looking at at least £4500 and that it is very complex, she wanted to move my top teeth back to fix my overbite which I thought was quite strange as my bottom jaw needs moving out. My jaw clicks when I speak and eat and I constantly aches as I cannot close my mouth properly, I cannot afford £4500 and can’t believe this was not picked up on when I was a teenager. Do you know of anywhere that will treat me on nhs and is £4500 really, realistic? I have heard of people receiving treatment on the nhs when jaw surgery is needed.

I still have a milk tooth and i also have an overbite what sort of attention should i get

Saturday, June 20th, 2009
Q.
I am currently trying to decide whether orthoddontic work will be worth the time, discomfort and expense! I have 2 main problems with my teeth, the first is that I still have a milk tooth, I think it is a molar, between my canines and molars. It is barely visible but when I smile it appears that there is a substantial gap. This has also pushe my teeth slightly out of line at the front. I also have an overbite, I am not sure how severe it is but I am told that it is apparent with my mouth shut as my lower jaw seems further back. When I was a child I enquired about getting this problem fixed but I was told to leave it as my top front teeth do not jut out. I was wondering what sort of attention these issues may require over what timescale and the approximate cost. I know very little about orthodontic work!

Im 26 and i always had an overbite and i also have crooked overlapping teeth any advice

Saturday, June 20th, 2009
Q.
Hi there,im 26 and i have always had an overbite however it has got worse through the years and is now roughly i would say 9-10mm, and i also have crooked overlapping teeth on the bottom. however i was wondering if the nhs would be able to fix this or would i have to go private? im not sure if they would say it was purely cosmetic, although i do get pain in my back molars and often bite my bottom lip with my top teeth. any advice is really appreciated. thanks

my 14 year old daughter has an overbite would you advise jaw realignment surgery

Saturday, June 6th, 2009
Q.
My 14 year old daughter has just been told that she will need jaw realignment surgery, as the hape of her face will not enable her to have normal braces. her overbite is such that she can insert her finger between lower and upper teeth. she has inherited her dad’s massive nose, which is prominent and makes her embarrased and shy. she has difficulties eating and she dribbles as she cant close her mouth properly. i know without looking it is hard to make an assessment, but would you advise surgery?
