I have a deep overbite and crowding on my lower teeth can i get it jaw surgery in NHS

Q. Hi I am 24 and I am wondering if you can offer me some advice. I have a deep overbite and crowding of my lower teeth. My dentist said it is routine orthondonics and shouldn’t cost more than £3000 or under. She referred me to Birmingham dental hospital and I had an appointment there and was told the problem is not severe enough to get treatment under nhs. He also assured me it wouldn’t be too costly for private treatment. I had a consultation today at a Birmingham clinic and was told I am looking at at least £4500 and that it is very complex, she wanted to move my top teeth back to fix my overbite which I thought was quite strange as my bottom jaw needs moving out. My jaw clicks when I speak and eat and I constantly aches as I cannot close my mouth properly, I cannot afford £4500 and can’t believe this was not picked up on when I was a teenager. Do you know of anywhere that will treat me on nhs and is £4500 really, realistic? I have heard of people receiving treatment on the nhs when jaw surgery is needed.

A. If you have seen the dental hospital you are unlikely to find another route to surgery. £4500 is within guide price for private orthodontics.
The jaw joint symptoms may be problem for orthodontic treatments. Separate splint therapy might be appropriate before continuing.
Hope this helps

Elaine Says :

After having braces for a year, I underwent surgery in 1999 during which both my upper and lower jaws were re-positioned. Following a subsequent infection and very traumatic re-admission to hospital, I never fully regained the sensation in my lower lip. Unfortunately the result was not good. My upper centre line is very badly positioned and I ended up having to have veneers to try and improve the appearance. Over the years I have had various infections and have recently been referred back to the hospital following periods of pain on the upper right side and swelling of my top lip. I am told that there is an infection in the plates and that the ‘metal work’ needs to be removed. The prospect terrifies me! At the time I was told that very thin titanium plates would be used and that the bone regrows around them. I can’t quite picture how they will be easily removed…
