Should I have dental veneers to correct my gummy smile?

Wednesday, April 11th, 2012
Q.

I’m 15 turning in December and I have a horrorifically gummy smile. My gums are much larger than my teeth they are tiny. I feel really embarrassed and self concious of my teeth all the time. I currently have braces on to straighten my teeth but these will not correct my gum issue. I have looked online and have spoken to my mum about porcelain veneers we both think that this is the best option, is there anything I can do now? Composite veneers? Or could I have porcelain veneers fitted now? thank you for your time doctor

Could a bridge be a good alternative to braces to treatment my impacted adult teeth?

Friday, March 23rd, 2012
Q.

Hello,
I have 2 baby teeth where my adult canine teeth should be. The adult teeth are impacted up very high. They are actually perfectly placed and not anywhere touching any nerves or disrupting any bones. I was told the best option would be to have my baby teeth extracted and have braces put on my whole mouth as well as drill up into my mouth and slowly bring my adult teeth into their proper place. I know this is the best option for me to keep my given teeth. However, I was wondering if putting in a bridge would be another available option. I do not have a lot of money or any dental insurance so this is a very costly method and I know bridges are a lot cheaper. I’m also 28 years old and I would really not like to have braces for the next 3 years of my life. My childhood/adolescent dentist swore i would never need them, which is why I am just now finding this out. I’m not sure implants would be an option because I’m not sure there is enough bone from the baby teeth. I would just like some advice on getting a bridge in place of a canine or any other cost effective options. Thank you!

What is the best type of brace to close a front tooth gap?

Thursday, March 15th, 2012
Q.

Hi, I have a gap between my two front teeth but I also feel as though the rest of my teeth need to be altered as I have very small lateral incisors and a small overbite. All of these lead to me having a small lisp when I speak. This causes me to feel uncomfortable and to have lack of confidence around people. In previous years I have also been bullied for how my teeth are. I am about to start orthodontic treatment, I was just wondering what type of brace would an orthodontist usually use to treat this? thank you doctor hughes for your time on this matter

Monday, November 28th, 2011
Q.

hi andrew, when i was a teenager i had braces for 4 years and the result was very good, as advised i kept my retainer in for 6 months (since i have read i should have kept them in for a lot longer)…since then they have slowly reverted back to there old shape, i am now 26 and really do not want to wear the dreaded train tracks again, what other possibilities are there and would behind the teeth braces rectify this problem….the main problem is my two teeth either side of my front teeth are behind, thanks for your time

I have abnormally shaped gaps between my teeth, what is the best treatment to close them?

Monday, November 28th, 2011
Q.

I m a 30 year old otherwise healthy female. I have gaps between my upper incisors which are abnormally shaped ( tapering at their lower ends, instead of being square). I am not sure if my upper row of teeth protrude slightly or the gap between my teeth causes this appearance.
If i were to go in for a smile makeover, please advise on the following
a) dental procedures you would need to carry out
b) approximate time required
c) approximate expenses
d) post procedure treatments/ maintenance required if any

Many thanks for your advice

I’m 13 years old, why can I not get braces on the NHS?

Friday, August 19th, 2011
Q.

Why wont the NHS fund my braces?

I went to the orthodontist in hope to get braces for my teeth, and my orthodontist said i have a 4mm overbite and overjet and also a lot of gaps that are the same size throughout my teeth. She said I would have to go private if i want them. I would need a standard brace which about 2000 – 3000 pounds. My mum cannot afford that because she does not work because my brother has autism and he gets fed through a tubein his stomach. Also he cannot talk. So she has to stay at home to look after him and take him to school. I just want straight teeth, i hate smiling because everybody sees my horrid teeth. By the way I am 13 years old.

My teeth are gapped and my gums bleed regularly, what are my options for treatment?

Tuesday, August 16th, 2011
Q.

Hi Dr.

I am not comfortable with my dental arrangement. The teeth on my lower jaw, talking about the front part, are not align properly with about two-tooth size gaps in between. The gum in the the same part seem to have worn out a bit but that has been the case since childhood and are always bleed when I brush my teeth

This causes me a lot of embarrassment especially have to give a presentation, etc. Is there a solution to this problem. Please help me. Thank you

My Simpli 5 brace isn’t working properly, what should I do?

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011
Q.

I had simply five on my teeth now for 7 and a half months. The bottom alignment went fine, but the top kept pulling on the opposite side teeth. My bite is now completely misaligned. Not that you would look at me and see that my bite is off, but when I close my mouth the one top tooth bangs off the bottom. The 2 teeth on the top never went back to being corrected. It was as though they worked on the wrong side by mistake. She made me a retainer in her office to try to do the final adjustment, but my bite is way off. Do you have any advice?

Is my Essix retainer causing an oral infection?

Friday, July 29th, 2011
Q.

Hi Mark. In your experience, can Essix retainers used to maintain orthodontic treatment give you fungal infections? I’ve had to have a replacement Essix retainer made after my old one has worn out but when I am wearing it, even for 10 minutes I am getting these white rings at the gumline, receding gums and white spots all over my gums from it. My new orthodontist has tried adjusting it and remaking it but the same thing keeps happening. I’ve never had the problem before as I have been wearing Essix retainers for 10 years now. The orthodontist won’t make me a new one and my general dentist is telling me to stop wearing it but I need to wear it to continue to keep my teeth straight but i’m damaging my gums in the process. What do you recommend? Many thanks.

Will the space left after my extraction be filled?

Monday, July 11th, 2011
Q.

Hello Doctor

i am 23 yrs old. i have been recommended for 4 tooth extraction (4 pre molars) for the treatment of class 2 div 1 and sub div and moderately severe crowding with mandibular arch and braces for one and a half year. but am worried whether the space left out after extraction will b filled ?
what is the success rate of this treatment .
does age factor plays any role in this treatment.
and moreover i have to go for crowning of my upper incisor so whether it is done before braces or after braces when i get proper alignment thank you for your time
