I am unhappy with my past root canal treatment should I pay my dentist or not

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009
Q.
A couple of years ago I went to a cosmetic dentist with whom I had 3 crowns done and root canal treatment on 2 teeth. The crowns were dreadful and stupidly I coughed up. When I had an appmnt. for one of the root canal treatments I was asked if Iminded another dentist doing it as the original dentist had gone to Germany on a course. The covering dentist had been shipped in from Manchester not only to cover for treatment but also to cover up the fact that his coun terpart was practicing whilst struck off. He tried far too long to find the root and it scared me of dentists to this day. I registered with NHS for routine checks after this. Just recently I approached another cosmetic dentist to re-do my crowns. After X Rays she said the root was damaged on tooth Mcr dentist did, but that she could extract it and bridge it to two crowns either side. She also said the other root canal was infected and needed treatment. This was going to be used in the bridge. I went for first appmnt and had panoramic x-ray and diagnostic wax-up. A couple of days later I went to my NHS dentist for routine check, explained to him what I was having done and he said that the teeth to be used in bridge weren’t very good and that I could be wasting my money as root canal could become infected again. As the cosmetic dentist had taken a large deposit off me I stopped the cheque and said I wasn’t going ahead but that I would pay for the appnmt I’d had. It was to be £350. I am peeved at having to pay this, and haven’t done yet. Shall I or shall I not. Sorry for the rambling but I’ve had it with dentists. I could even add to this. Please advise.

Are there any clinical trials for implants/crowns that I could take part in?

Q.
I have bad enamel erosion on my teeth which started to appear when I was a teenager. I had extensive orthodontic treatment and once my braces were removed my orthodontist noticed how much erosion there had been where my teeth were not covered with my braces. My sister’s teeth are in a similar condition and we were both sent for numerous tests to check the acidity of our saliva but with no conclusive results. The erosion has steadied but I still notice my teeth shrinking. Each time I visit a new dentist they are shocked at the state of my teeth and ask if I have been bulimic or been a drug user. I haven’t but I can tell that they never believe me. I had one specialist suggest that it may have been caused by acid reflux. Whatever the cause, my teeth are not in great condition, they are straight from the orthodontics but are stained from lack of enamel and eroded. I feel uncomfortable smiling and never open my mouth when smiling in photos. I was told by one specialist that I saw that I would have to eventually have to have all of my teeth crowned. I would love to have this work done but there is no way that I am able to afford it. I attempted to pursue treatment through the NHS but they do not recognise it as essential yet. Are there any dentists or clinics that can provide treatments in installments to make it more affordable? Is it worth travelling to another country to seek treatment? Are there any clinical trials for implants/crowns that I could take part in? I would really appreciate any advice that you could give me. Thank you

Q.
I am diabetic and have problems with my teeth/gums, I also have my sons wedding approaching in May and would like my teeth fixed for that special day. I have lost a lot of confidence due to the condition of my teeth. Due to the cost of cosmetic dentistry I would like to know if it is possible to get veneers fitted on the NHS. If so how can it be arranged.

could i get a crown on the nhs and could it be white

Saturday, April 18th, 2009
Q.
Hiya. i recently recieved root treatment on one of my back teeth but my dentist said she wasnt able to complete the treatment because one of the roots was hard to get at. she put in a temp filling for a month to see if i had anymore pain but thankfully not so she filled it with the nhs fillings. ( im 17 and a full time student so i get dental treatment free ) that happened in january. its now mid april and the tooth that was filled has compleatly cracked up the side. i was wondering what i could get done to repair this as the filling can be seen and feels uncomfortable in my mouth. could i get a crown on the nhs and could it be white as i hate the thought of having a gold tooth. many thanks. 17, northern ireland
