is it okay to have white fillings at the top of my teeth where the gum has receeded

Monday, May 18th, 2009
Q.
My dentist wants me to have white fillings at the top of my teeth where the gum has receeded. He says this will protect the root. I am concerned these will fall out because they aren’t sitting in a cavity. What are the chances of this happening?

should i have gum graft done first as i am concerned about a small hole between the teeth

Friday, May 15th, 2009
Q.
Dear Dr Moore 4 years ago I had gum graft on the gum on the top left hand side above my canine and the front tooth to the right. The graft didn’t take so I had it done again and this time it went well. The two teeth were gappy between caused by the recession. The graft went well and the surgeon sort of bonded the two teeth together at the back to make the teeth less gappy. However I was not able to floss in between them at all. I brush gently around the gum area. A year ago I had the graft done again as the gum receded again, however the surgeon told me it didn’t work as he didn’t take enough skin from the roof of my mouth. I haven’t as yet gone back as it took a while for the roof of my mouth to feel normal again. I am going to make an appointment. However recently in between the two teeth at the top a small hole has appeared and where previously there was gum I am now able to push floss through. This wasn’t there before and despite brushing maybe it is because small particles of food have got stuck there, because of the bonding between the teeth and not being able to floss, I don’t know. When I look at it, it sort of looks a bit black and I can’t work out if this is just the hole against the white of the teeth looking black or whether it is the bottom of the gum. Anyway I recently went to the dentist and hygenist and now have been told I need to have a root canal and then crown on my top right hand back molar. Also a very very old filling had come out which I need to have replaced and possibly a crown. On the other top hand side the dentist said there is some decay which needs sorting. I do brush and floss every day and recently gave up social smoking (I was not a heavy smoker). Two questions really: Should I have the gum graft done first by the specialist as I am concerned about this small hole. Is this likely to get worse quickly? or stay the same if I push floss through and keep the gum in the small hole clean? whilst I get the other work done? I just don’t want it to get any worse so it becomes beyond repair. Or should I have the root canal, crowns, decay treatment etc done first? The dentist suggested getting the root canal, crowns etc done and said when I had the gum done she would take the bonding off the teeth and recontour them, hopefully then I will be able to floss between them and stop the problem reoccuring. Also I was quoted £3000 for the root canal, crown, white filling – I thought it seemed quite pricey and was considering getting another quote from The British Hungarian Medical Service, who I found on the internet, even their London prices were cheaper than my quote. Am I able to ask my dentist for my panoramic xrays and dental treatment to use when seeking another quote? is this acceptable? Sorry if I’m rambling! I hope I’ve made sense and you can advise me. I look forward to your reply. Many thanks.

i removed my front lower left tooth but still have pain in gums could you help me?

Monday, May 11th, 2009
Q.
Hi In June 2008 I fell down and knocked my front lower left tooth out. I had the tooth put back in about an hour and a half later and fitted with a splint. I had the splint removed about 2 weeks later where the tooth had set back in place. I was then having a lot of pain from this tooth so went to the dental hospital in Sheffield, here they removed the nerve and about 7 weeks later went back (referral by my own dentist) and had root canal treatment (this was in December). After root canal treatment I was still in pain – was told not given it long enough, so had to wait another 2 months. I waited and still had pain, I was then told it had been unsuccessful (and had resorption), so would try removing the bottom of the root, this never happened and I was told I needed to have my tooth removed and this would remove my pain. I have had it removed at my own dentist (April 2009) and am still in a lot of pain. I have been back to my dentist where they have given me antibiotics- not worked still have pain in my gum and the inside and outside of my chin is burning up. I am still unable to eat correctly, bend forward and keeps me awake at night. My dentist doesn’t seem to know what the problem is. Just wondering if you could help me? Many thanks

Q.
Hi Dr could you please tell me what options I would have as to replacement teeth if I had to have several removed due to gum disease. Would the dentist be able to fit temporary false teeth to hide obvious spaces while the gums heal? I am at present having the gum disease treated and want to know what my future options are? I am 42 could I get dentures on the nhs?

i have read that implants can only be fitted within 3 months of tooth extraction is this true?

Friday, May 8th, 2009
Q.
I am in my early thirties and have horrendous damage to my teeth through self abuse such as bulimia and i also had an accident when i was younger for which i was given high amounts of fluoride which when my adult teeth came through they were severly stained and very brittle. i have now had about 12 teeth removed in total and i wear a top denture plate for the missing ones but nothing on the bottom plate as i have never been advised or tried for one. i have always been very self conscious about my smile but now it is horrendous my plate does not fit well and it irritates me constantly even though i have had it for over a year now and i end up taking it out and not waering it when im home, although my husband is very good about this its not exactly very sexy especially for someone of my age. im now so desperate to sort my smile out but have no idea what my options are as my dentist is not very good. i thought about implants but the amount i would need would be extrememly costly and i have read that implants can only be fitted within 3 months of tooth extraction due to bone and gum shrinkiage is this true?? are there any other options that you think may be open to me??? i live in essex quite near chelmsford what would the cost be for me to have a consultation with yourself?? thanks so much for any help and advice you can give me
