What is the Best Material for Crowns?

Monday, May 11th, 2015
Q.

Dear Mr.Hughes, I broke an upper back tooth on Thursday night, which literally split across. I stuck it together with a repair kit from the chemist and went to see a new dentist (my dentist of many years has sadly retired) the following day hoping he would bond it back together.
Unfortunately he said he couldn’t, so recommended I have the loose piece pulled out and plan to come back for a crown.
I have to say I was rather disappointed.
My question is, was this really necessary?
And also what is the best material for crowns? I would prefer white rather then metal.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Kind regards.

The Back of My Crown Feels Rough. What Should I Do?

Wednesday, September 17th, 2014
Q.

Good afternoon Dr Gambroudes, thank you for taking the time to read my question. I have just had a back crown replaced today with a CEREC crown. I have been asked to wait a week and see how it feels, and then by all means go back to the clinic if there are any problems. At the moment, it’s obviously quite sore and feeling a bit strange which is of course to be expected, but I have realised as the anaesthetic is wearing off that the back of the crown feels very rough against my tongue when other crowns I already have feel smooth. Is this normal? What should I do please? Thank you in advance.

Monday, July 14th, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Moore. I am really miserable over my gummy smile. They come to far down and I can’t enjoy any kind of social life or take pictures without worrying.  Do you know if crown lengthening would work in my situation or is there some other form of treatment I could consider? I would really appreciate your advice regarding this. It has always something that has always got the way and I can’t get past it without help. Thank you for taking the time to hear me out. I look forward to your reply.

Should My Dentist Give Me Temporary Crowns When My Teeth Are Burred? I Need Clarification.

Thursday, July 10th, 2014
Q.

Hi there. I have had four teeth on the front of my smile burred today to make them ready for my crowns to go on in ten days. Should my dentist have put temporary crowns on? Only he as just used this type of resin and shaped them into very small stumps and they don’t look very nice and I’m paying private. Is this what he should of done or should temporary crowns be used? He did say that he was going to put temporary crowns on but when he finished burring my teeth but I have been reading up on your website and it saying that I should of had temporary crowns fitted. Could you clarify this?

My Crown Had To Be Cracked Out As It Seemed To Be Stuck On Something. Do You Have Any Idea What This Could Be?

Wednesday, July 9th, 2014
Q.

Hello Andrew. My front tooth fell out weeks after 4 front crowns were placed. It was cemented back in a couple months ago and the same crowned tooth  felt like it was going to come out again. This time the crown felt like it was hanging on by a thread. The crown had to be cracked out in the end. I was wondering what it was stuck on, do you have any idea what it could have been? Time went by the same crown fell out again within a few months. When it fell out it had a long plastic thing inside the crown. What was that inside of my crown? It was this time that I learned the tooth had decayed and it had to be extracted. I am waiting for an implant on this tooth.

My Dentist Has Said A Plastic Crown Can Last Between 5 And 10 Years. Does This Sound Reasonable?

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2014
Q.

My question is about using a plastic crown as a permanent solution for a cracked tooth. I have an upper left tooth (#26) that has had a root canal and recently cracked from the surface down into the root. The dentist has said that because the root is cracked they can’t put a post in, and because of that they can’t use a porcelain crown. So far he has cemented the crack, prepared the tooth, and taken imprints to make a plastic crown. He said the plastic crown should last about 5 to 10 years. Everything I’ve read only mentions plastic crowns for very short term use. Does this sound like a reasonable treatment?

How Much Would I Have To Pay To Change A Silver Crown To A White One?

Monday, January 7th, 2013
Q.

I am 26 years old and have had a silver crown fitted to my second from back upper tooth. I was told you would not see when I smiled but you can see it when I smile and I’m unhappy with the way it looks. As I only had It this week, could I just pay the difference approx another £200 more to change to a white crown or would I need to start from scratch and pay much more money around an additional £400 to the £200 I have already spend? Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you shortly

I’m getting my crowns renewed, what type should I get?

Thursday, March 17th, 2011
Q.

Hello Mark, I am due to have my Caps re newed as they were fitted over 25 years ago. The top is black & my dentist has suggested having the porcelain caps (all white) and not with the black bit going through the tooth. With the black it would be £280 & without would be £380 each & i need 4. Please could you give me your opinion as to which one to get this time & how long would they last. Thank you very much for your help, kind Regards.

What metals are used in crowns?

Friday, December 10th, 2010
Q.

I was advised to have my gold crown removed (dentist said x-ray showed ‘a problem’). I’ve had the new crown about a year. The You & Yours programme about aluminum bronzes worried me as my crown is bronze coloured. Wrote to my dentist asking what metals were in my crown. She replied: zinc, silver, gold, palladium, indium and iridium. Because of my residual concern I would be grateful if you would confirm that this alloy would result in a bronze colour, and that there is no risk of the metals leaching.
