I Have To Wear An Acrylic Denture. Would A Dental Hospital Provide Me With Dental Implants For A Nominal Fee?

September 2nd, 2014
Q.

Hi Mark. I have a acrylic denture for my 2 front upper front teeth. My teeth have had extensive work prior to extraction and I have had an apicoectomy, numerous crowns, posts etc but I’ve not any long-term success. I would really like to have either implants or a bridge, however I can not afford the quote of £4000 minimum. My whole bottom and top set of teeth are quite poor. I clean twice daily but seem to suffer from broken teeth and I had my wisdom teeth out under general anaesthetic 40 years ago and again would love to have the gaps filled with teeth.
I find it difficult to chew food as the gaps leave the gums quite exposed.  Could dental hospital students do this work for a nominal fee?

I Have An Impacted Tooth On The Upper Left Side. Can This Be Easily Removed? I May Need My Wisdom Teeth Removed Also.

September 2nd, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Gambroudes, I have an impacted tooth on the left side on my upper gums. My wisdom teeth have also not been removed yet. I don’t know if that has had an impact on the way they have to be removed. I want to get this extra tooth removed as soon as possible. I also haven’t had a dentist appointment in a while. I have heard from some that it is not possible but I have also heard that it is possible. I am undecided I need to ask someone who actually knows what they are talking about. Can this easily be removed?

My Teeth Won’t Close Together Properly As I Used To Suck My Thumb. If I Was To Get An Operation For This, Would I Have To Pay?

September 1st, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Hughes. My teeth won’t close together and it’s they’re all messed up because I used to suck my thumb. I stopped this last year. I really want an operation on my mouth. I can’t even smile. If I was to get an operation do I have to pay? My tongue sticks out and it’s really annoying. I really want to have a perfect straight smile that would close properly and I want to feel happy and good about my teeth.
My jaws are really wonky and they won’t close together while my front teeth are really messed up and they won’t close together. I really need to help. I would love to get surgery.

I Have An Abscess At A Root Which Has Developed Over A Period Of 18 Months. Would This Prevent Me From Having A Same Day Implant?

September 1st, 2014
Q.

Hi Dr Gambroudes, If I was a suitable candidate in all other respects, could a same-day implant be fitted to an upper first molar which has been identified as having a failed root canal treatment and where the X-ray shows an abscess at root which may have been developing for a minimum of 18 months – The crown has been taken off by a former dentist of mine in error and I’m now left with just the bottom 4 bits of tooth just below gum line. I need this treatment ASAP as I don’t really want to wait the 3 months healing time needed after extraction of the broken tooth if necessary.

I Recently Had An NHS Veneer Fitted. I Am Most Upset At The Final Appearance As It Looks Bulky. What Are My Options Now?

September 1st, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Hughes. My question is about a dental veneer I had fitted by a NHS dentist 4 days ago, I had this done to replace an old veneer that had a fracture. I am most upset by the final appearance as it looks bulky and sticks out against my other tooth and the fitting feels wrong, I can feel air from the top of veneer, it’s hard to describe but it’s similar to the feeling of when you floss and you can tell you’ve flossed because you can blow air through the small gaps between your teeth. What are my options now as I am concerned I’m going to be stuck with what I’ve got? Many thanks for your help.

Hi, I’ve Had A Gum Infection For Three Months. I Have Tried Everything But I Keep Getting The Flu. What Should I Do?

September 1st, 2014
Q.

Hi Dr Gambroudes, I have had a swollen gum infection for about 3 months now, which I think is due to a cut on the gum which has now healed. The top tooth where I cut it was hurting. I went to the dentist who did an X-ray and couldn’t find any problems. About a month later I went back and they just put antiseptic gel on it. I went to the doctors and got antibiotics but it didn’t work. I have had a deep cleaning done but the gum is still swollen and I keep getting flu. I have tried different mouthwashes, salt water, vitamin C tablets and so on but nothing is working. What else can I do? Would the gum need to be cut to get the infection out? Thanks.

I Recently Had Eight Veneers Fitted And I’m Struggling To Make Certain Sounds. Please Advise Me? It Doesn’t Seem To Get Any Better.

August 29th, 2014
Q.

Hi Mark. I recently had veneers done on the upper 8 teeth, my old teeth were small and spaced apart. Now I can hardly pronounce anything and especially the
“S” sound. I’ve heard that it gets better with the time but what worries me is that no improvement what so ever had happened since I installed the new veneers. All the practice I’ve been doing seems to have no effect at all. Also the veneers that were installed are bigger and taller than my original teeth. Please advise me doctor? Thanks.

Could I Receive Dental Treatment From A Dental Student For Reduced Rates? I Need Dental Work Taken Care Of.

August 29th, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Gambroudes, I just want to ask a quick question. I’m 19 and I need work done on my teeth. I’ve had a bridge fitted and a few teeth built up to look more natural. I was told they would only last a few years and I would now like something more permanent. I’ve heard from friends that I can get teeth done by a student dentist. I was wondering if you can recommend anything. I’m very self-conscious about the way my teeth look and would like something to be done. Thank you.

I Would Like To Know If You Treat Children For Orthodontics Who Suffer From Osteoporosis?

August 29th, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Hughes. I hope you can help us. I would like to know if you treat children for orthodontics who have been on biphosphonate treatment for osteoporosis?  My daughter is 14 years old and has been on and off treatment for 8 years.  I have had her on waiting lists for up to two years only to then be told that now they won’t treat her, even though her consultant has said the risks are minimal.  Is this something you or any of your colleagues can advise us on? She is desperate to be treated because she also has overcrowding that can be painful at times. Thank you.

My Daughter Is Four And Two Of Her Teeth Have Grown Slanted. What Could The Reason For This Be. Is This Anything To Worry About?

August 29th, 2014
Q.

My daughter who is 4 years old now has two 2 lower inward slanting teeth. All her other teeth are normal. What could be the reason for this? Is this something to worry about?
She got her first teeth exactly when she turned 1 year old. Two lower teeth are slanting inwards face-to-face. When we consulted with a paediatrician, they told us that there was nothing to worry about. I haven’t consulted a dentist yet. I look forward to hearing your reply.
