I have periodontists and want my teeth replaced, what would you recommend?

Q.
Dear Dr Hughes

I have periodontists and my upper teeth are splayed and gappy, very long and I wanted them replaced. I am looking for a second opinion and do not know where to go.

My present dentist has told me I can have the upper teeth replaced in sections only, first four front teeth including work on one back molar. Yet all the upper teeth are quite bad to look at and the bone and gum have eroded away.

I am confused to why I can’t just have a fixed denture and can’t seem to get a direct straight forward answer, I just want to know what the options are.

I would like to find out from another dentist whether there are other options suitable for my teeth. I have to have this work done and the teeth and gum (although not the worst that I have seen having researched this) I have at present are not very nice looking so I find myself being quite ashamed to laugh or speak.

I have seen a few different options via researching implants and want to find out if fixed dentures are an option, whether I can take the molds and ct scans with me for a second consultation to a new CD (or is this not the done thing?), and if I can have the upper teeth all removed and replaced. I am so confused with regard of who to go to for a consultation. I have saved hard for this work to be done, the amount I was quoted keeps changing so I don’t really know where I stand. I just want some clear answers which are best suited to me as an individual. Can you advise? I’m 47. Thank you so much

A.
Hi  There are lots of different options to replace missing teeth – depending on number missing, health of the bone (eg quality and how much there is), your concerns and budgets. Implants are the ideal to replace missing teeth nowadays but you need to make sure there is no active infection (periodontitis), you are healthy and ideally a non-smoker. Dentures would be an option. I would suggest finding a dentist you feel confident with and discuss all your options before having a scan as often templates are needed.
I do recommend my colleague – Dr Nick Fahey – http://www.harleystreetdentalstudio.com/html/implant-dentist.html
Good luck
