What Should I Do About My Gingivitis?

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2014
Q.

Hi Dr Hughes. I have severe gingivitis and it’s extremely painful. It flares up at least once a month, and I now have loose teeth but my dentist refuses to take my teeth out. I’ve had composite fillings along the gum line and the nerves were being affected. I keep my mouth and gums as clean as I can, gently brushing approximately five times a day and using Corsodyl mouthwash. My teeth are also crooked and stained, and the pain in my whole face is becoming unbearable, it is affecting my life in a big way. What can I do? Thank you.

My Dentist Said He Can’t Do Anything About My Periodontal Disease, Is This True?

Tuesday, July 23rd, 2013
Q.

Hi,

I was subject to bad periodontal disease caused by smoking (I think). The bleeding went on for a long period of time before I had it seen to but by then it was far too late, the damage was done. I have the disease under control now through regular cleaning but I have lost a lot of bone apparently and gum recession of around point 4. The gaps are quite noticeable but my dentist keeps saying there is nothing that can be done. Is this true? I thought he would have been a bit more helpful! I’m looking for some sort of restorative treatment in order for my old smile to come back, I used to have such a nice smile. I just don’t believe that NOTHING can be done. Surely there is something? Can you please offer me some advice? Thank you for taking your time to read this.

I Am 22 And Suffering From Periodontal Disease, Please Help!

Thursday, June 27th, 2013
Q.

Hi, i have periodontitis , i have lost 5 teeth and will soon be losing a few more. I wondered if you could advise me on something please? I am 22 years old and therefore (obviously) very young and would like some advice and how to move forward. I have very little amount of gum and hardly any bone left in the areas where the teeth were taken out from. My dentist has not been very reassuring so i would like to know what i can do to save my remaining teeth and i would like to know of any procedures that are available in my situation. I am currently wearing dentures and have been for the last two years but would like something permanent.I don’t even know how I got into this predicament but it’s really getting me down. Any help will be very much appreciated. Thank you!

My Gums Have Receded Badly Due To Periodontal Disease, Is There Anything That Can Help Them Grow Back?

Monday, June 24th, 2013
Q.

Hi

I have some receding gums at the back of my mouth due to periodontitis.

Do you know of anyone using stem cells to regenerate gums as I have heard trials are taking place already to help grow back the gum area? I am desperate to receive some sort of treatment before they start looking really bad. My teeth have already begun feeling very sensitive and my gums are constantly bleeding. It’s very worrying and I’m trying to get the disease under control. I was wondering if you know of any other treatments to help with gums as I have black marks on mine which is due to probably smoking but I would like to know if they can ever go back to pink again? Anything at all? Thanks in advance.

I Didnt Brush My Teeth And Now They’re Yellow, What Should I Do?

Thursday, April 4th, 2013
Q.

Hi. When i was about 10/11 i went through a period of not brushing my teeth. I fully regret that time now because most of my teeth are now yellow and my front two permanent teeth are slightly wobbly. This makes me really insecure because i don’t want to show my teeth. I am now 13 and the last time i went to the dentist i was about 6/7. It also sometimes hurts when i brush my teeth, which i now do twice a day using Pearldrops to try and whiten my teeth. I also use listerine as my mouthwash. My right canine tooth is higher than all of my other teeth and if my mouth is opened in a certain way, you can see a lump where my canine is pushing against my skin. I need advise on what to do… I know i need to go too the dentist but i never have time, i go to a private school making it harder to get certain days off. Please reply:)

I have periodontists and want my teeth replaced, what would you recommend?

Friday, June 17th, 2011
Q.

Dear Dr Hughes

I have periodontists and my upper teeth are splayed and gappy, very long and I wanted them replaced. I am looking for a second opinion and do not know where to go.

My present dentist has told me I can have the upper teeth replaced in sections only, first four front teeth including work on one back molar. Yet all the upper teeth are quite bad to look at and the bone and gum have eroded away.

I am confused to why I can’t just have a fixed denture and can’t seem to get a direct straight forward answer, I just want to know what the options are.

I would like to find out from another dentist whether there are other options suitable for my teeth. I have to have this work done and the teeth and gum (although not the worst that I have seen having researched this) I have at present are not very nice looking so I find myself being quite ashamed to laugh or speak.

I have seen a few different options via researching implants and want to find out if fixed dentures are an option, whether I can take the molds and ct scans with me for a second consultation to a new CD (or is this not the done thing?), and if I can have the upper teeth all removed and replaced. I am so confused with regard of who to go to for a consultation. I have saved hard for this work to be done, the amount I was quoted keeps changing so I don’t really know where I stand. I just want some clear answers which are best suited to me as an individual. Can you advise? I’m 47. Thank you so much

After suffering from Periodontist I need a new set of teeth. Help?

Friday, June 17th, 2011
Q.

Dear Dr Hughes
I suffer from Periodontist in the most advanced form I have lost seven teeth in the top and a lot more are loose. I did receive treatment in the newcastle dental hospital and they got it under control. They say that i have to stop smoking because it will make it worse. I see my dentist every 3 months for a scale and polish but i am not happy with the treatment i am receiving. He made me two sets of teeth in the last year and i cannot wear them. My bite does not meet. So I am know going to go to a private cosmetic dentist and wonder if you know if i can get a full set of cobalt chrome dentures made.
thank you

I have advanced Periodontitis, are dentures my best option?

Monday, June 6th, 2011
Q.

Hi
I have advanced Periodontitis and have been told that the pockets after having treatment for three years are still 12mm + deep in some areas. The shift in my teeth is quite horrendous especially the two front teeth which now have huge gaps between them and jut out quite badly so the bite is off. Its very embarrassing for me, once a gummy woman, now a long toothy one embarrassed to smile.

My dentist has told me that I could have the two front teeth (possible the ones either side) removed and to replace them with a partial chrome plate denture. I’m wondering whether there are other alternatives and if this is the right move at this stage?

Also if going down the road of having teeth extracted, wouldn’t a bridge work the same way and isn’t this available on the NHS? Won’t having a chrome partial denture affect the cleaning of the teeth?

I know that the bone in my jaw is not in good shape, so even if I had the money, implants wouldn’t be an option.

I am left with awful jutting teeth, with huge gaps and gums which seem to be disintegrating even though I try hard every day to keep on top of my health routine. Please can you tell me what the best options are? I’m worried I may make the wrong choice and have to live with being toothless.

Thank you

I was told I would loose all my teeth to periodontal disease, what do you advise?

Tuesday, April 12th, 2011
Q.

I was diagnosed with severe periodontal disease at 38 and was told that I would lose all my teeth soon. My teeth were lose and I did not have much bone mass. My dentist said it could have been caused by stress, genetics etc. I have been really depressed as my teeth have moved out of alignment, I cannot bite anything with my front teeth due to an extreme overbite. I rarely smile anymore. I have been told that the best option is to remove my teeth (even though they are healthy below the gum) and to wear dentures. I have come around to this idea. However, I would like cosmetic dentures fixed with mini denture implants but I cannot afford this. Is there anyway that I can get funding for this as I cannot bite, I do not smile and I am depressed as I was told i will loose all my teeth when I was 38. I am now 43 and my hands are tied as I cannot afford to do anything about it. Please help!

Regards
