How is Cosmetic Dental Insurance Different to Normal Dental Insurance?

Monday, October 17th, 2016
Q.

Hey there, I’m just enquiring on how cosmetic dental insurance is different to normal dental insurance.
I’m going to need implants soon due to having gum disease and I’m too anxious, If I had to wear dentures and would be too embarrassed. I regret not looking after my teeth well enough when I was younger but I was never encouraged too! If I had the money I’d have implants on all my teeth, as my back ones went quite bad when I was pregnant. I also built up a huge fear of dentists as I wasn’t encouraged to go, but I have started to and had a couple of fillings done. I want a perfect smile, but financially I can’t and it gets me down so much! Thank you and kind regards.

How Can I Improve the Suction on my Dentures?

Friday, September 2nd, 2016
Q.

I’m 60 years old and just received my second set of dentures. My question is: The top denture feels like the suction should be better than it is, once they are made can they add to the back (length) so that the suction would be better? They look like they could stand to be a little longer in the back. With my previous set (top) when they were first made, the suction was great but I lost weight and they became loose and would drop down. With this new set, the top just doesn’t have the suction I feel it should. Thank you so much.

How Can I Help My Wife Get Her Teeth Fixed?

Friday, May 20th, 2016
Q.

Dear Dr Moore, I was wondering if you could advise me on how my wife can become a guinea pig to help have her teeth fixed. 2 years ago my wife had to have many teeth out due to bad dentistry. She was fitted with a denture for top and bottom but had problems with ulcers, this was put down as being a bad fitting plate. My wife had a second lot done and still ends up being very sore and ulcerated, also they have affected her remaining teeth due to being ill fitting again. My wife has since been back to her NHS dentist, explained to them the issues she’s having only to be told yet more teeth may have to be removed and that she maybe allergic to the dentures and that if that the case there’s nothing more they can do. My wife is only 44 and very conscious of her mouth. We were always going for meals and nights out but now she makes excuses to hide herself away, she gets upset if she can’t eat a meal due to having no chewing teeth and her gums being too sore. I am on disability myself with my wife being my carer, my wife will do anything to meet my needs and I myself would love to be able to meet hers, I would love to see her smile a full smile again. I hope you can advise me, kind regards.

Can I Have Dental Work Done at a Dentistry School?

Tuesday, April 26th, 2016
Q.

Dear Dr Andrew Moore,

I am 26 years of age and moved from Scotland to London to try and better my life. I struggle with depression and anxiety which doesn’t help this matter.

I don’t have or make a lot of money and am trying to save in London. It’s impossible. The problem is, my UL3 has no root and is a black tooth which was covered with an NHS veneer, which has now split and come off. My UL1, UL2, UR1, UR2 have been extracted and replaced with a denture (along with UL4 UR4 AND UR6) which doesn’t fit. So I can’t eat with it in. My UR3 is the only tooth that hasn’t had any work done to it, this also includes both my wisdom teeth UR7 and UL7. The rest of my upper teeth have either root canal or really big fillings and you can hardly see any tooth.

This has caused me to loose weight due the fear of my teeth breaking when I eat and I have stopped socialising with people and have missed days at work also. I’m left with no confidence whatsoever! The worst thing about it is, I have always taken care of my teeth and flossed, brushed and used mouthwash but the decay is so bad! I lack calcium, always have. I gave my mum pyorrhoea of the mouth while I was in the womb.

I can no longer live like this and it’s so expensive to correct and I don’t want a denture for my whole upper mouth. I have heard of many people going to dental schools to get the work done for free. I’m lost and don’t have any clue of what my options are. All I have done is cry all day and not left the house.

Is there any advice or help you can offer me?

Warmest regards,

Do Flexible Braces Cause Speech Problems?

Tuesday, April 19th, 2016
Q.

I wear NHS partial dentures but I find when I talk I sound weird and people cannot understand me very well, they say I’m swallowing my words. Because of this, I only wear my dentures occasionally. I have heard of flexible dentures being more natural. If I wear them would my speech be normal like my usual voice, or would I have the same problem? Also, because my speech sounds funny to me and others I always feel self conscious of getting into any conversations. I am not into implants as I am terrified of the dentist as it is and also I’m going to be 65 yrs old soon and I would rather save what little money I have towards my retirement.

Can Dentures be Produced using iTero?

Tuesday, April 19th, 2016
Q.

Can full dentures be produced using the iTero for someone who already has a full set of dentures? All I see on various websites is the Wand being used on patients who have their own natural teeth. I am desperate for new dentures but can’t face having the traditional method of impressions as last time I had them done I almost choked and it has put me off completely. I look forward to your reply. Thank you.

How Can I Improve My Smile, And How Much Will It Cost?

Monday, August 17th, 2015
Q.

I have 5 top teeth, there’s two in the middle,1 to the left and two to the right, and on the bottom I have 8,  four at either side of the middle. All the teeth at the back are broken or missing due to lack of care over the years. I am embarrassed and talk carefully as not to open my mouth, which causes me to mumble as I don’t pronounce my words properly. I only smile with a closed mouth and have never had a real ‘show your teeth smile’. I hate not doing it due to the embarrassment caused. People see me as miserable as I don’t smile. What options do I have and what sort of costs are involved?

My Teeth Are Broken and Black. What Can Be Done?

Wednesday, July 29th, 2015
Q.

I am 71 and my teeth are broken and black. Could it be helped with a product, or could I have them all out? It would be nice to smile and talk to people without them commenting on my black teeth.

I would like them out but due to ill health and having a heart attack in 2006, is it wise to have this
done at my age? They do not hurt, some of them have broken off and left the root in my gums. They look unsightly to my family and friends, and most of all
myself when I look at them in the mirror.

Can I Get All My Teeth Replaced?

Wednesday, May 27th, 2015
Q.

I want all my teeth replaced. I have shrinkage of the gums and feel the teeth I have will only get worse if they stay in. I have not been out the house in 2 years because of my teeth but I can’t afford the prices, any advice please? I don’t want to be house bound and would love to enjoy time with my grandkids. I’m only just 40 and sometimes I feel suicidal because of my teeth or feel like taking them out myself. I have a couple snapped off, some have big holes and some are split from top to bottom. I’m now starting to get pains in my bottom gum more than my top. My dentist is an NHS one and they don’t seem to care unless you are paying for treatment.

My Dentures are Uncomfortable. What Can Be Done?

Wednesday, May 13th, 2015
Q.

Hi. I have had all my teeth taken out on the NHS, except one wisdom tooth. The reason they were removed was my bone/gums were receding. I have been left with hardly any bridge to hold lower dentures, but my dentist has used a clip to hold the one remaining tooth. This is okay whilst it’s in but there’s going too be problems when I lose it. Both my top and bottom dentures are so uncomfortable, and my face shape has changed an awful lot.
Is there anything that can be done?
Thank you.
