Should I go for root canal and then crowns or veneers on badly worn tooth? These are two dentist’s different opinions.

Q.
In the states, the dentist wants to do four root canals and then crowns on the lower 4 front teetch, as they are badly worn from a major overbite. The Costa Rica dentest says why ruin good teeth as the roots are very strong. I understand that porcelin does not do well on dentyn and needs to be on enamil which I don’t have any. He states that a hard composite veneer is better suited on teech with not enamil.,

What can be done to restore discoloured front tooth after root canal failed?

Tuesday, October 19th, 2010
Q.
i want to see if i can restore the discoloured front tooth, it’s ‘dead’ after a root canel treatment, i was told by my previous dentist that the blood supply stopped going to the tooth. Took the advice tried the filling but the coverage is only 50% and I don’t like the ‘bump’ as the filling is not in alignment with the rest of the teeth. Please advise,

My tooth has been through a lot – pain, infection, chipped – but I don’t like the though of having it removed. Any other options?

Friday, October 15th, 2010
Q.
I had a white filling placed in a molar tooth approximately 4 years ago. Immediately afterwards I had some pain with this tooth and occasional (not major) pain over the following year. My dentist, however, said it was fine. Then last year I had considerable pain with this tooth. I went to the dentist, was told it was infected, given antibiotics, the filling was removed and antibiotic matter placed inside & a temporary filling. This developed into quite a major abscess and I think had a further course of antibiotics and then had root canal undertaken. Recently a part of this front, side, of this tooth chipped away. The dentist suggested it be crowned (he had mentioned this before as something I could consider doing) but he said he thought there may be a fracture in the tooth, and told me to wait two weeks. When I returned he said he believed the tooth should be removed. By then, I began getting some slight pain…this however was a week ago, (no antibiotics were prescribed) and the pain has worsened. I am very unhappy at the thought of having a tooth removed… are there any other options?,

I have been having terrible pain after root canal treatment. Can you suggest anything?

Thursday, October 14th, 2010
Q.
I have recently undergone root canal treatment, since then I have had terrible pain in this tooth if any pressure is put on it at all . I have gone back to my dentist and she has not really given me a reason for this . She has given me antibiotics which on day 3 still haven’t made a difference. The tooth’s now more sensitive than it was before the treatment . Can you suggest anything as I go on holiday in a few days and don’t want to visit a Turkish dentist,

My dentist has said implants are not possible due to bone loss and has recommended a 4-tooth-bridge. Sound reasonable?

Friday, October 8th, 2010
Q.
Dear Dr. Caplan I wondered whether you could advise please. My front right tooth has suffered a lot of trauma over the years due to accidents. I am 34-years old. I have had it capped and I think I have had route canal treatment on it in the past also. However, I understand that it is now dead, my gums have receded a little to reveal the dark brown colour of the tooth underneath. The tooth has become very wobbly (enhanced by wearing for a while an anti snoring guard-which I regret buying!). Anyway my dentist has confirmed that the tooth now needs to be removed. We discussed the options of either an implant or a bridge. He has advised on a 4 tooth bridge and I wondered whether you could advise as to whether this is correct, as it seems to go against the grain compared with what other dentists are saying on the internet. He took some x-rays of the tooth and showed me that the the tooth’s bone is significantly worn down and fractured. He stated that if I went down the implant road then a bone graft would be required. He quoted a price of about £3,000 if I opted for implants. He also stated that he would have to refer me to another dentist to be the implant work. He suggested a bridge was the better option for cosmetic reasons. He cited a 4 tooth bridge would give a better alignment than simply fitting an implant (he may not have said this word to word– i’m afraid that have forgotten a lot of what he said). I think another reason is that he knew funds were a problem and a bridge would be cheaper. He has quoted £1,500 for a 4 tooth bridge. Your advise would be appreciated. Many thanks.,

How long after root canal treatment can a crown be fitted, and what are the options of filling a tooth gap?

Q.
How long after root canal treatment do you leave until you start crown fittings? What are the options for filling a gap (L6) which has been recently removed? Thanks,

I have been told different things by two dentists. Who do I believe?

Friday, September 10th, 2010
Q.
Dear Dr Tennet I am at so so confused. I had a root canal treatment on my first premolar about 2 years ago. I didnt have a crown. Needless to say the remaining tooth broke after a year, first on the back. then at the front a year later. The embedded remaining piece which I assume being the filling, was loose. I had a white filling, I also had posts placed into my root canals. I first went to a dentist who said that nothing could be done in terms of having a crown, as what was left had been fractured, pointing to and showing me the loose bit that I myself earlier had discovered. Because of this the dentist recomended either an extraction, and the option between a bridge, denture or implant. I then went to another dentist, who said that I could have a crown fixed onto the tooth/ remaining piece even though this was a loose piece. I have really no idea what to do and who to believe and would really appriciate your help. Thank you, Kind Regards,
