I have been having terrible pain after root canal treatment. Can you suggest anything?

Q. I have recently undergone root canal treatment, since then I have had terrible pain in this tooth if any pressure is put on it at all . I have gone back to my dentist and she has not really given me a reason for this . She has given me antibiotics which on day 3 still haven’t made a difference. The tooth’s now more sensitive than it was before the treatment . Can you suggest anything as I go on holiday in a few days and don’t want to visit a Turkish dentist,
A. After root canal treatment it can take up to a few weeks for the tooth to settle down, The only thing you can consider is having the root filling done again. You could consider seeing a specialist endodontist for the treatment.

Sometimes when you have a first stage root canal treatment it can be very painful afterwards. I would recommend going back and seeing your dentist as he may be able to either redress it or give you a course of antibiotics and pain killers to help with the pain.

Hullo I came in last Thursday night to have a root canal filling done. I have been in lots of pain since, my tooth is very very sore, I cannot eat onthat side of my mouth, plus I have this terrible taste in my mouth, it is the same as what was put into root canals. Could you please advise me if allthis is normal?

I just had a dental appointment yesterday with a complaint that I had pain under a crown/root canal. I was worried that I may have gotten a food particle stuck and caused an infection. I have recently realligned my teeth with invisalign which created a gap in the area in question. Also, there is bone loss in the same area. I was told by the dentist that the tooth was cracked (although they could not see it on an ex-ray) and the tooth had to be extracted. They offered no other suggestions and started discussing implants and expensive proceedures. A day later, my tooth feels better, not great but better. I understand that over several years a tooth with a root canal can fail, but do you think that the dentist jumped to conclusions without looking at altenative solutions first? Should I seek out anouther dentist and second opinion? I’m not sure if I agree with the ethic sof this dental office. Thank you for any suggestions and guidance.

I had root canal treatment 1 week ago on a bottom double tooth, the smell during the procedure was awful, the pain has been horrendous since, I am taking pain killers constantly, will this calm down? went to emergency dentist who said it would take 10-14 days, no facial swelling, just constant pain and soreness on the jawline. its really getting me down, just want to know if it might subside. I had root canal treatment done on a molar tooth about 3-4 years ago due toan abscess. Recently the infection came back and so I went to see my dentist. After taking an xray he said that the infection had come back however the treatment that had initially been done on the tooth did see to be thorough. The canal did appear to be filled completely in the xray. He then saidthat refilling the canal could not be done on the NHS and that a specialistwould have to do it. I have left it for some time to see if the infectionwould abate on it’s own but it has not. There is very little pain howeverpuss does appear almost on a daily basis adjacent to the gum. How much would a revision treatment cost and what are the chances of it being successful? Is it important to have this seen to as soon as possible with regard to risk of losing the tooth? Is this a common/straightforward procedure?

Hi I have tooth where was root canal done about 10 years ago. The filling in middle is holding ok, but the tooth around fall out 2 weeks ago. I got temporal plastic crown. My dentist took the impression. The question… My dentist / her team have never placed real diamond to tooth. And they do not feel comfortable of experiencing. I have 4mm diameter round brilliant cut diamond, what i would like to get into the new white crown. Since there is nolonger real tooth in… i rather would have big bling in it. My dentist here was saying it would be possible in gold, but..i do not like any metal init, just white tooth and bling. Is this something what you might be customto do? Know how to get it done? Or is there any other dentist who you could recommend in London area? I travel to London every 2-4months normally 2-6days at time. Eventually i wonder how long making the crown would take? (How many days i would need to stay in London for getting it done?) If i sendthe tooth imprints and diamond there before, it would be faster done or? Even thou its big bling..it has inclusions, so it was not sooo expensive, soi would still dare to get it transported 😉 I send as attachment few photos of the bling and tooth… it is the 4th thoot from middle up, easy to seewhiter plastic shiny….could not send on your web, please let me know email that i could post these photos, if you think you might be up to for thejob. Thank you for your time of considering this, I hope to hear soon if this is something you can technically get fixed for me.

I underwent root treatment several years ago on my lower right 3 canine because of an abscess. My current dentist x-rayed this tooth because I was having some pain and informed me that I still had an abscess and root treatment had not been done properly and said it needed doing. During treatment itwas found that the tooth had been partially filled and a broken file has been left in the tooth. What I am enquiring about is whether the tooth can besaved by removing the file and treating the abscess

Go see your dentist it sounds like the temporary filling is too big / high, get this adjusted , do not start having the crown made until you are pain free.

I’ve just had a first root canal procedure on a lower back molar after pain for a few weeks, the nerve has been removed and a temporary filling applied. My dentist said the nerve was very inflamed for some unknown reason and that there is no infection or crack in the root that he can detect. Two days in and I am in agony when biting on it even with neurofen and paracetamol, the pain extends around my jaw and base of my tongue. I used Corsodyl as a ‘clutching at straws’ measure and it has actually helped this time. There is constant underlying ache though. My next appt is in 7 days time to finish the treatment. Is this normal or should I call my dentist tomorrow?!

June 28th, 2011 at 08:47 PM

You should not be in agony after a procedure, contact your dentist as you may require a repeat dressing / tooth taken down out of the bite etc.

A heavily filled tooth( lower molar) has had part of the filling broken away. I have been given several options do nothing Have a root canal filling and crown bridge implant (I think this is too expensive ) I dont know what option to take , as I know of others who have had unsuccessful root canal work and had to have the tooth out anyway. However the dentist was less keen on the bridge as the teeth eithe side are what she called virgin. I was also told I could pay exrra to have a specialist do the root canal work at his surgery which would cost £400 to £500 and then pay at my own surgery for the crown to be fitted. The dentist said they could not guarantee the root canal work at my own surgery as they are not specialists. thank you

I had UR6 re-root canal performed 8 days ago, the Endo expert went through a gold in lnlay to do the treatment. The area was sensitive for 2/3 days after but then appeared to be settling, however my pre treatment symptoms have returned (much worse). I am now getting the pain in the tooth, the gum area and then up into my cheekbone and eye socket. As the hours pass it appears to be worsening and no pain relief will assist whatsoever. The tooth is also a little senstive to cold air. Could you advise me as to what this pain is and if it is normal 8 days post re-root treatment? Regards,

September 19th, 2011 at 08:47 PM

It can take time for the pain to settle their may be some infection present or the tooth may have a crack I would really need to see you to assess your tooth and give you the best options.

I had root canal treatment done to my front right tooth about about 2 weeks ago. A few hours after the treatment, I had intense pain. I went back to my dentist next day and the temporary dressing was left out for 3 days to drain any infection. The pain went away. When the dressing was put back in the tooth, the pain returned again. After 4 days, I had the root cleaned again and refilled with some medication inserted. How long should it take for the pain to go away? Is it normal for the pain to last this long?

October 21st, 2011 at 08:47 PM

That depends…it can take hours, das or even weeks My advice would be for you to see a specialist endodontist regardless, for a second opinion Kind regards

I had five visits for one root canal and a crown (same tooth). Prior to the root canal, I experienced slight pain in that tooth, especially to the touch. Every visit, I told the dentist the tooth was still sensitive to touch. After the fifth visit, I was told the tooth may need time to “calm down.” I was referred to an endodontist. Does the first dentist have an obligation to either reimburse me or follow up somehow? Is it true that a tooth may need to calm down for months? Each of the visits lasted from one to two hours, with at least three visits being two hours each. Is that an abnormal amount of time?

November 4th, 2011 at 08:47 PM
Eleanor Says :

It was obviously tricky and the dentist obviously took a long time to try and get it right for you so a reimbursement might not be that reasonable?

If the root canal is done soon it might not change colour. However in the long run the tooth may be darker and could need some cosmetic treatment when he is older

I got one of my right upper molars extracted 3 days ago and now i have some sort of sore on the gum area and it hurts to drink, eat or even when my tongue touches it , it burns. Is it caused by the novacaine or trauma from the needle?

December 15th, 2011 at 08:47 PM
Lydia Says :

Likely not. You should have it evaluated. if it is only 3 days since it was done it is likely that this will pass shortly.

December 15th, 2011 at 08:47 PM
Geoffrey Says :

How long after having a tooth extracted should the extraction area still be sensitive to cold liquids? I can’t drink anything that is too cold in fear that it will cause pain in the site of the extraction.

December 15th, 2011 at 08:47 PM
Isaak Says :

Temperature sensitivity after an extraction can last for some time. This is usually a result of the tooth in front or behind the extraction site being exposed in the root area. After healing is complete it is likely that this will diminish.

December 19th, 2011 at 08:47 PM
Audrey Says :

Had a root canal after the tooth had been capped. My question is why is that area hurting? It is not sensitive to cold nor hot, just a throbing pain. Went to Dentist he could not find anything wrong. But I can’t stand the pain. What should I do, or what could cause this throbbing pain. X-Rays were taken, no sign of any problems. They said it could be TMJ, but I have the feeling that it’s the tooth with the crown and root canal.

December 19th, 2011 at 08:47 PM

If the tooth was very infected and has had a good root treatment carried outr it can still take time to recover some teeth need to be left 3-4 months to settle.

I recently went to the dentist for RCT on a lower molar. I was under the impression that the canals would be measured and x-raysed to check. My dentist did not do this and has only usd a size 20 file. The tooth did settle over xmas but now I have discomfort from it. Please can you tell me if x-ray and measurements are not taken on RCT1, is it possible for nerve tissue to still be in the canals and causing symptoms?

January 17th, 2012 at 08:47 PM
Ally Says :

Generally a sequence of files is used to remove the nerve tissue and shape the canal, radiographs are recommended at several stages to verify the procedure. A return visit and assesment would be a good idea.

Hi My upper teeth, especially the ones right after my eye teeth, are always hurting. I went to my dentist and she said my sinus cavities are so low that they are hitting my nerves of these upper teeth. I have sinusitis and this makes it worse. Ihad root canal treatment and a crown fitted about 18 months ago under the NHS. I have discomfort which seems to come from the back edge of crown which can been seen above the gum line. The dentist has not re-x-rayed this tooth at my recent check up and says it’s fine and that having the back edge exposed is of benefit as it can be cleaned more easily. However, I have managed to isolate the discomfort to just under one corner and I can sometimes get discomfort when drinking hot liquids. Help!

February 6th, 2012 at 08:47 PM
Theodore Says :

It sounds like a problem with the root canal treatment. The tooth shouldn’t show any discomfort if the margin is exposed if its had the nerve taken out. I would mention it again, it might need the root treatment x-rayed to see if a problem is developing?

I need this tooken care of, what should I do? can a get a bridge, partial dentures or something?

March 6th, 2012 at 08:47 PM
Jazlyn Says :

Hi If there is little tooth left above the gum to build up, often it can’t be saved as it won’t support a crown. To replace missing teeth you can have a removable partial denture, a bridge that is fixed to the adjacent teeth, or an implant. An implant is considered the optimal treatment for missing teeth and with good planning will look just like a natural tooth. Good luck

March 15th, 2012 at 08:47 PM

Hi, My front two teeth are slightly overlapping. When i consulted with my dentist, he came out with two options i.e Root canal therapy followed by metal free crowns and the other one is orthodontics (braces). My age is 22 and I wanted to ask for which treatment i should go for? is Root canal therapy the right way to straigten the teeth? will i face any problem after root canal therapy? and also for which treatment the after effects will be less?

April 12th, 2012 at 08:47 PM
Grant Says :

Out of the two treatments, teeth straightening is the most conservative and non-invasive treatment. There is a small risk of tooth fracture or reinfection with root canal and also bear in mind that crowns may require replacing every 10- 15 years or so

My bottom, last, left tooth needed a root canal. He was able to do it with a porcelain crown that was on top. I got home in 24 hours and was still in horrific pain. The dentist called me and said that the pain should subside in 48 hours. I was at 72 hours as still in pain. I went to my local dentist. He said the first dentist did a great root canal but my crown needed to come off for proper healing. It was taken off 24 hours ago. I am still swollen in the jaw and still in pain. I am on antibiotics and pain killers. My appointment for a new crown is in 3 weeks. WHY and WHEN will this pain subside. I can’t take it.
