Should I have the nerve in my tooth ‘killed’ before the tooth dies?

Friday, August 24th, 2012
Q.

Good morning. I’ve had a porcelain crown on my front tooth for the last 25 years. It has now broken so I need to get it replaced. When I originally had the crown done it was on top of a vital tooth. My dentist said I could either leave the tooth as it is which could cause problems later on as the tooth could die or I could have the nerve ‘killed’ before fixing my new porcelain crown. I’ve had no tooth pain to date with my existing crown and I’m not sure which option is better. Please advise. Many thanks

Should I have my tooth extracted by an NHS dentist or see if it can be saved by a specialist?

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2012
Q.

I have a root canal that has failed and my NHS dentist has advised I can have the tooth removed on the NHS or see a specialist who will advise if it can be saved, the cost of which I would have to pay for as a private patient. The root canal was an NHS treatment originally, do I have any recourse for action as this has failed with the original dentist?? What is the likely cost of specialist treatment and what are the alternative options like an implant rather than paying for the cost of trying to save the tooth??

I had crown treatment months ago and my tooth is very painful, what is causing this?

Monday, August 20th, 2012
Q.

I had a crown put on about a year and half ago, straight after I was in pain and had to take anti biotics. It has never really felt right since, but then the tooth next to it needed a crown, so that was done. The first one carried on hurting over the months so I asked dentist to take the crown off. He did and tried to put another one on, but it was too painful so I asked hon to leave it off for a while. The pain is shill bad burning and aching all the time. It hurts more when I lay down at night. He did another root canal on it but it has made no difference. What should I do now please as dentist says it can only be one of the teeth needing root canal, but I am in so much agony around the gum and bit of tooth that is left and it’s hurting my jaw as well I think. Thank you.

My teeth are feeling loose, please help!

Wednesday, July 4th, 2012
Q.

Dear Dr. Moore:  I need your help. My dentist has no idea as to what is happening, and I am seeking another professional opinion as to what I should do in regards to this problem: I also finished my dental benefits.

I have had root canal treatments and crowns on teeth 7&10, I am suffering from severe pain now on both teeth, and my teeth are loose.

Also, teeth #8&9 have denal implants and crowns on them. Tooh #8 got split in two because of an accident I was involved in when I was 8, I am now 42, does this have anything to do with it?

Dark spot found on tooth #10 on ct scan.

Please help me. Thank you for any advice in advance.

Should I be worried about continued dental pain after root canal treatment?

Monday, April 2nd, 2012
Q.

I finished root canal treatment yesterday, after checking the xray, a tiny bit at the very top of the root has been missed, this morning it feels the same as it did at the beginning before ant treatment began.I ,ve had 1 weeks course of antibiotics,it was cleaned out as this was being done it was very smelly and the pulp had rotted away. It was covered & i went back 9 days later,it stil felt odd sort of tingly numb feeling & the smell was back. When it was being recleaned yesterday i could smell it again it was also a bit swollen and tender at the top, she finshed the job & then checked the xray where it was noticed a tiny bit has been missed, she seemed to think it would be fine i have to go back in 10 days, but at the minute it feels the same as it did right at the beginning about 6 weeks now

Has the root canal treatment failed?

Thursday, January 26th, 2012
Q.

I had a 2nd root canal treatment on my upper-right molar, 6 months ago. I have been experiencing mild pain and discomfort ever since and it’s getting worse. Everytime I bite on the tooth, floss and brush my teeth I feel mild pain. The gum surrounding the tooth feels tender. My inside my right nostril also feels watery when I bite on the tooth. I went to my Dentist 3 months ago and had an x-ray but it didn’t show any signs of infection.
I would like to know if my symptoms are a sign that the RCT has failed? Also is the wetness in my nose connected to my tooth? Thank you

I am having extreme pain in a tooth that has just been cleaned, what should I do?

Monday, November 28th, 2011
Q.

I have extreme tooth pain after a pulpectomy/pulpotomy – I thought the pulp was cleaned out, why does my tooth still hurt so badly? It is a throbbing, aching pain, and the tooth is sensitive to to touch, biting etc., but the pain is still present without touching the tooth at all. I am waiting for a root canal to be completed, and have a temporary filling on the tooth. I had a cavity that was eating at the nerve in my tooth (which was broken in half). I had the pulpectomy/pulpotomy 4 days ago.

My veneer is painful and there is some mild swelling, what can I do?

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011
Q.

Hi, hopefully you can give me some advice with some dental issues I’m having. I had a veneer fitted on a top front tooth back in January, and the dentist who did it managed to damage the tooth to the extent that I needed a root canal treatment done – this was done at the end of March. Since then the pain has improved but is still present; the tooth can be tender to bite down on (but not always) and the front surface is often (but again not always) sensitive/tender to light pressure. Tapping on the tooth is much better than it was previously. I am also having some pain in the gum between the front tooth and the one to the right – my dentist can see nothing wrong with the gum but it is frequently slightly painful and can swell slightly first thing in the morning/on eating. I don’t know if this is likely to be from the tooth or from an internal infection. I appreciate this is a lot to describe and expect you to comment on, but any advice would be appreciated. Because there are no obvious issues my dentist does not seem in a hurry to try to fix anything, but these issues are now having an effect on my mental health.
Thanks

X-rays show a black spot near the nerve of my tooth suffering from decay, can this affect the results of root canal treatment?

Tuesday, September 6th, 2011
Q.

Hello Dr,
I have a front tooth decay, which I had filled with no immediate issues . The tooth was sensitive for a while when one day pain alleviated and the gum below the teeth started to swell up. the dentist here took a few xrays of it and asked whether I wanted to go with root canal treatment. However in the xray near the nerve of the tooth (nerve in the upper part of the tooth and beneath the gums), we could see a black spot. Taking this black spot into consideration do you think normal root canal treatment can go ahead or should i consult a specialist to assess before procedure with the root canal treatment.
Thankyou very much in advance

Can you give me some information on Lesion Sterilization Tissue Repair (LSTR)?

Tuesday, September 6th, 2011
Q.

Hi Dr Butt,

i think i need a root canal treatment as the pain in my tooth is slowly getting worse and is becoming difficult to cope with, i have done some research online and have discovered a new treatment called Lesion Sterilization Tissue Repair (LSTR) using a combination of anti biotics (3Mix-MP)

the reason that i want this treatment is because the tooth is not actually dead and is allowed to heal naturally and so does not become brittle and its always better to have a tooth that is able to function as close to 100% as possible!

do you do this treatment at your clinic or have any plans to in the future?

kind regards
