Should I have my tooth extracted by an NHS dentist or see if it can be saved by a specialist?

Q.
I have a root canal that has failed and my NHS dentist has advised I can have the tooth removed on the NHS or see a specialist who will advise if it can be saved, the cost of which I would have to pay for as a private patient. The root canal was an NHS treatment originally, do I have any recourse for action as this has failed with the original dentist?? What is the likely cost of specialist treatment and what are the alternative options like an implant rather than paying for the cost of trying to save the tooth??
A.
Root canals, no matter who does them, have a % failure rate, but the skill and the experience of the dentist performing them will have an influence on the success rate. The cost of having your failed root canal repeated by a specialist endodontist will vary depending on what kind of tooth it is – back molar teeth being the most expensive usually due to the large number of roots and presence of more complicated root shapes. Costs will be from £400 to over £1000.

Root canal treated teeth often need to be crowned as well to prevent root fractures so the cost (dependant on the quality) of the crown needs to be condisered also.

In general the cost to replace the tooth with an implant and crown is about double that of the specialist root canal and crown. What must be considered however is that there is never 100% success with the repeated root canal. I would highly recommend the opinion of the root canal specialist on the potential success, before deciding on which route to go down.

I hope that helps
