What can I do about my teeth grinding?

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011
Q.

I grind my teeth at night and have for about 25 years. Normally, I wear a mouth guard. I also have migraine headaches and other types of headaches. I think that there is an association between my grinding, ear issues, and neck pain. Is there any way to stop the grinding? Most of the night guards I have had recently, last few years, have not been helpful. They do not take the inclusion into consideration. My teeth have vertical lines in them from the grinding and my gums have recessed (I think there are other reasons for this, but hygeine is not one of them, FYI). What suggestions do you have for the grinding and for a mouth guard that is not expensive but works? Do the vertical lines in my teeth make it difficult for me to not have my teeth whitened adequately? (a dentist recently mentioned this and it did not sound realistic to me). Thank you!

My bite has gradually changed for the worst, what can I do?

Monday, May 23rd, 2011
Q.

I have three symptoms with my teeth that have occurred in the last 12 months. First I noticed that the inside of my cheeks were becoming sore on both sides when I closed my jaw. Secondly I noticed that my teeth no longer touched in the front when I closed my jaw. All my life I had bitten my fingernails to a small extent I can no longer do this!I can now slip a thin coin between my teeth with my jaw closed. Thirdly when I chew my food my teeth tend to squeak causing me some embarrassment.

My dentist tells me that my bite has changed and that the only contact now is with my two rear molars on each side. She offers no treatment for this other than warning that I face problems in the future.

I am 64 years old. I have all my teeth and they are generally in good condition. I have three questions what is the likely cause of this change, secondly will the changes continue and thirdly can anything be done to restore my former bite?

What devices would you recommend to stop teeth grinding?

Monday, May 23rd, 2011
Q.

Hi Dr Glaister,

I would be really grateful for your opinion on this please. I am a 27 year old woman and I think I am suffering from perhaps not bruxism, but teeth clenching. I can feel myself wanting to clench my teeth together during the day, and in the mornings when I wake up my back teeth feel sort of tender. I don’t think I have a particularly sore jaw though. I have been told I have an open bite (my front teeth don’t meet but the back and sides do), and that there are signs of clenching/grinding in my mouth, namely a sort of frilly pattern on the edges of my tongue, ridges on the insides of my cheeks and maybe slight wear on my teeth. I also suffer from frequent headaches, and a bit of back and neckpain, However I spend time sitting at a computer too, so there are confounding factors. I think I have been suffering from this problem on and off for years, with its severity varying (at times I have not been aware of it at all). Getting to the point what I want to know is what kind of device you would reccommend for wearing at night for this? I had a soft guard made years ago, but I felt this made my teeth even more tender in the morning, and it was uneven in height so the back teeth seemed even closer together in comparison to the front ones (although I apprecaite that it still must have been protecting my teeth). Is a hard guard likely to be better as I would not be so inclided to clench down on this? What do you think of the NTI? Can any of these devices cause permanent changes in bite alignment, and do you know of any adverse effects these can cause if worn for long periods of time? Many thanks for your help.
P.S. I read another of your posts and thought I should mention I am also an ex-citalopram user and an ex-vegetarian!

I’m scared of injections, is there an alternative?

Monday, May 23rd, 2011
Q.

I have a top jaw tooth that has left the gum and is loose also the next tooth to it is a crown on a pin is also loose but not as much movement as the big tooth I took many years to get over my childhood fears of a dentist and have for a long time gone for checkups and hygenist visits twice a year. My dentist has said I would need a roof ingection for the extraction. I would like to know if there is any other way these teeth can be removed as I still remember the pain of this injection for another tooth a few years ago, and can not convince myself it will be different this time. hoping for some advice how to cope with this i.e. could I have a general I am 63 years old, and on blood pressure tablets.

I have painful wisdom teeth but am afraid of the dentist. What can I do?

Thursday, May 12th, 2011
Q.

Hi there I have a wisdom tooth coming in and it has always been a LITTLE painful, like a dull pain and I thought nothing of it, Iv had this light, dull pain for a year or more but recently (the last week) it has been getting sorer and sorer and now Ive booked-in to see my dentist on Friday 22nd April. I brush frequently, always make DOUBLY sure to brush my coming-in wisdom teeth as much as I can and use mouth wash and do the odd flossing in a week. I have a fear of the dentist because I have a fear of needles so this is why I take SUCH good care of my teeth. I am 20 and only have 1 filling which I got as a child and some white plasticy coatings in the grooves of most of my molars that my uncle gave me as he is a dental hygienist.
The gum around my painful Wisdom tooth is VERY red and swollen and the pain can be too much to handle, Ive been taking Anadin to cope with the pain better but even the rubbing of my tongue when I swallow or talk or eat is painful as it rubs the swollen bit of gum.
Ive set myself up for getting it removed but I am VERY scared of needles in my mouth and just thinking about it makes me cry LOL Im just wondering if theyd still use General Anaesthetic with me? Im in Scotland.
Thanks

Can scleroderma lead to problems in the future?

Tuesday, May 10th, 2011
Q.

Hello Doctor Andrew Moore. Please can you assist with my question as soon as possible, Can scleroderma lead to problems in the freezing of the area needed to be frozen for a tooth extraction, to give you a relevant example: if it makes the injection site i.e. the gums thicker or harder or not able to spread the freezing material properly,  My mother has been given a referral to an oral surgeon for the extraction of two teeth in hospital under “local” I am greatly concerned that she may experience a lot of pain during the procedure because the freezing process is not properly distributed. I would be thankful if you can get back to me on this.
