I want my awful tooth removing! What can be done?

Tuesday, May 10th, 2011
Q.

I am a 27 yr old female who has hide my “extra tooth” as long as I possible can.. I cant tell you the last time I have been able to smile showing my teeth because this one tooth is so embarrasing to me.. I have great health insurance but unfortunelty not good enough because it will not cover a cent for braces to correct this tooth. The tooth is on the top, growing out of my gum. Besides the fact of it being embarrasing it is starting to cause pain.. My dentist refuses to remove it just keeps referring me to the orthodontist but theres no sense of visiting him again as he has already quoted me a fee and its just not affordable. I am a single mom who works full time and alls I want to be able to smile showing my teeth. Can you please tell me what you suggest I do so I can finally give my confidence the boost it needs/needed? I personally wish my dentist would surgically remove the tooth and place an implant in the space where the tooth was suppost to come down? Thank you for your time and your answer in advance. I look forward to hearing from you.

Unstable teeth are starting to Cross. Can you assist?

Monday, May 9th, 2011
Q.

Hi

Over the last few years I have noticed that the space between my top two front incisors has gradually been decreasing. Originally I had a sizeable gap, about 4-5mm, this has now decreased to the extent where they are begining to overlap. I am in my early 40’s.

My main question is what is causing the change after all these years of stable teeth, is it something to do with ageing and will it get worse?

Secondly what possible solutions are there? since my teens I have had partially errupted wisdom teeth, as well as an extra partially formed canine on the left (assuming you’re only meant to have one on each side, my siblings both had 2 per side)

Any help, advice or information would be very useful to decide what to do next, thank you.

Filling treatment has left me with pain that wasn’t present before. What should I do?

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011
Q.

A couple of months ago i registered and had my first visit to a new dentist. I had a filling in my very back upper left tooth aprox 2 months ago. I had no pain previous to this but was advised there was a cavity. Straight afterwards I was in a lot of pain and returned to the dentist. He advised that he added a bit more seal to the filling. The pain was still there so I returned again and he said the filling may have been too high. He removed the filling and appeared to put in cotton wool mixed Vaseline. He told me this was a different type of filling, informing me that the majority of people suit the other filling I had originally but as i appeared sensitive to that, this new type of filling should suit me better. He also gave me antibiotics. 3 weeks have passed and although this seemed to have fixed the pain temporarily it has now flared up again. I have never heard of a cotton wool filling before and I have my doubts this is a permanent solution. The tooth is also left with very sharp jagged edges I can feel with my tounge.
I was initially told the first time I returned that I may need a root filling or extraction. I find this a bit concerning as I had no problems previously. Could you please advise me on this and whether cotton wool fillings are common practice.

Just something else you maybe able to clarify. On my first visit he also did a 10 min clean polish and scale to my teeth which I was charged £60 for. I thought this was something a hygienist did as my husband who is with another dentist got referred for this treatment and it was about 40 mins with a proper hygienist.

Thanks in advance

My teeth are decaying but there is no apparent pain. What should be done?

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011
Q.

Hello Dr Safeer Butt and thank you for taking the time to consider my question. ihave 2 teeth that are badly decayed through years of fizzy drinks and not very good oral hygiene.the decay has eaten through the enamel leaving a dark browndecay underneath.generaly speaking is the fact that i have no pain orjust the normall sensitivity to hot/cold a good thing as regards treatment options.there is also no undue pain when pressure is put on teeth.the teeth in question are my upper central and lateral incisors.i would be interested in your opinions of possible options if as im hoping the decay has not yet reached the pulp/nerve as im not in ahy discomfort. im sorry the question was so long.thank you for your time.

Can you suggest how to stop teeth clenching?

Wednesday, April 13th, 2011
Q.

I have a problem with clenching my teeth. This has caused problems with my jaws. I wear a mouth guard at night, but I also find myself clenching during the day. I often have severe headaches which I attribute partially to the clenching. Any suggestion to keep me from doing so. Also, I believe my lower canine teeth are being pushed back.
