Some of my adult teeth didn’t come through and now I have large gaps in my smile, what can I do to fix this?

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2012
Q.

Hello, I just require some general advice please. When I was 18 I was told I needed 3 baby teeth taken out (two at top and one right bottom, all second premolars), so I went to hospital to have them taken out. I am now 25 and the adult teeth never did come through which has led to all the teeth close by to spread out and cause enormous gaps, also I now have a large gap in my front teeth, I did have a free consultation a few years ago but I was told that to have the teeth fixed it would cost me around £3,000. Is there anything else I can do or is there a cheaper way to fix this problem? I’m really self concious about my smile. Thanks for your time.

I am looking for an experienced prosthodontist in the Central London area, can you recommend anyone?

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2012
Q.

Hello there Dr Hughes. I am currently looking for an experienced prosthedontist in central London for my octagenarian mother who suffers from enormous problems with her teeth. She has an upper denture which has split recently and had a new one made which doesn’t fit correctly. This in turn causes her a lot of pain & distress and she really needs some assistance. Do you think you qualify under her requirements? or can you suggest any practices that I can turn to on her behalf? Thank you in advance from myself and my mother.

I had a negative experience with the dentist many years ago and my teeth are now severly decayed, what are my options?

Monday, August 20th, 2012
Q.

Hi Dr Moore, I had a negative experience with my dentist in the 70’s involving sedation and as a result have only been to the dentists once since then (im 41 now) I have several decayed teeth and am in constant pain and can only eat soft food, Im at the stage now where i’d like all my teeth extracted and dentures fitted, I’ve never been able to afford it before but now after losing my job I have a NHS tax credit exemption certificate for the first time in my life so I really need to sort this before it finally pushes me over the edge. I’d like to know if I’d be able to get this done on the NHS or will they try to talk me out of it with partial dentures? Also will they extract all the teeth in one hit as theres no way I could leave the house with no teeth. How much will this cost as I realise i’d have to pay something towards this! Thanks for your time!

I am in agony with my teeth and painkillers are not helping, what should I do?

Monday, August 20th, 2012
Q.

Hello Doctor. Do you have any idea what could be causing me to be in such pain? I have had pain in my teeth for 2 weeks on and off but now it’s getting so bad that pain killers are not even working and it’s stopping me sleeping it is also giving me a head ache. I have tried using pain killers but they are now not working at all, which is causing me worry. I have also been using bonjela but this is only taking away the pain for a short while is there anything that I can do to help or stop the pain? as it’s beginning to affect my work and sleep pattern. Thanks.

How long will it take for my gums to heal after having 15 teeth extracted?

Monday, August 13th, 2012
Q.

How long does it normally take for gums to heal after an extraction of 15 teeth before someone can be fitted for dentures. I know that there are some places that do immediate dentures but i can’t afford that. I am going to get my teeth extracted next week there are 15 teeth all together one has a cap and one is a wisdom tooth. I don’t want to be without teeth for a long time so if you could please just give me an estimated time i would greatly appreciate it. Thank you for your time.

I was diagnosed with SLE and then developed advanced periodontal disease and bone loss. Can I receive NHS help?

Wednesday, August 1st, 2012
Q.

Hello Dr Shaffie. Can you please provide me with some guidance. I had gum disease which my dental practitioner was treating successfully at this point. I was then diagnosed with Systemic lupus erythematosus approximately three years ago, and was as a consequence put on Hydroxychloroquine and methotexrate. Since then my teeth have gotten to quite a bad condition with several loose and some missing. I have been told by my dentist that I have advanced periodontal disease and bone loss. I don’t know if I have the dental terminology right with that but I was hoping you would be able to let me know if I am able to receive financial help from the NHS for this problem or some other source to help fix my dental problems. I hope you are able to let me know and thank you.

My wisdom tooth is causing me terrible pain, does it need to be removed?

Tuesday, June 26th, 2012
Q.

hello doctor moore. i am 28 years old and i used to feel pain occasionally at the back of the gum where the wisdom teeth grows . and the problems is that i’m still feeling the pain even at this age. i have 28 teeth currently. and it has now been confirmed that the wisdom tooth on the lower left jaw is growing horizontally and pushing the immediate molar tooth. and i am feeling terrible pain all the time. what should be the next course of action for me? would it be appropriate to remove the healthy neighboring pushed tooth so that the wisdom tooth will have space to grow through horizontally or does the wisdom tooth itself have to be removed? thank you for your time doctor

I lost my smile 2 years ago starting with a small gap

Wednesday, June 6th, 2012
Q.

I am really really confused on what to do. My whole life I was complimented on my smile, my smile was the only thing I had going for me, I lost that smile 2 years ago.I have been having so many problems I don’t know where to turn or where to begin. I am on my 4th dentist just this last year and paid over $3,500 already…my problem began with a space that started 2 years ago with my front teeth..I was told I had periodontal disease, I could never afford the money to have that problem resolved so with that I started losing my back bottom teeth, and now 3 more bottom teeth need root canal treatment.I only have 8 teeth on the bottom and I now need 2 pulled in the back at the top. Most of my teeth are crowned at the top but.the latest dentist told me I need the 2 back teeth pulled because they are growing down because I have no bottom teeth to stop them from growing. If I get that done, and have the surgery (which I can’t), he said I can get braces after that to fix the gap I now have between my teeth…can I still get braces with so many pulled teeth and having crowns which are over 15 years old? Won’t they get weak and fall out? Since I have so many problems, should I get them all pulled and get dentures? Do I get my 3 bottom teeth root canaled and then get a partial? I don’t know what to do first, being I can afford all the work, I think my best bet would be to get them all pulled but my dentist doesn’t recommend me doing that.I also keep getting abcess, the last one almost put me in the hospital, it was all through my body, I woke up with it and couldn’t even stand,I am just so confused.I haven’t taken a picture or smiled in 2 years and this has gotten me so depressed.I cry every time I look in the mirror, I brush my teeth looking down so I don’t see myself…I don’t even know if I trust these dentist because my first dentist did some work (scaling) and sent me to an orthodontist for my braces and after this new dentist took x-rays, fitted me for braces, he told me he needed a letter from a endo (some other type of dentist), so I had to go to this new dentist who told me I needed a lot more work before I got my braces…so he sent me to yet another dentist, who then pulled 2 teeth and just told me I needed to more pulled.I had 4 sets of x-rays done by each dentist, they all did some work, and I’m back where I started.PLEASE tell me what to do, if you can lead me in the right direction I would really appreciate it.I hate myself right now and I can’t live like this anymore ;((

Thank You!!!

How can I stop acid erosion from damaging my teeth?

Thursday, April 19th, 2012
Q.

I have just been diagnosed with sever tooth erosion. I am only 23 so I’m really worried. I don’t drink a lot of soft drink or juices and I drink at least 2L of water each day, so i’m confused on how it got this bad. But the dentist did say I have naturally acidic saliva, which makes a bit of sense, but why do I? and how can i get my saliva neutral?… I am now using tooth mousse, which i hope will help. What cosmetic procedures can I have to make my teeth stronger and have less ‘divots’. I don’t have any fillings or tooth decay as yet. Is there some sort of coating I can put over my teeth?
