My bite has gradually changed for the worst, what can I do?

Q.
I have three symptoms with my teeth that have occurred in the last 12 months. First I noticed that the inside of my cheeks were becoming sore on both sides when I closed my jaw. Secondly I noticed that my teeth no longer touched in the front when I closed my jaw. All my life I had bitten my fingernails to a small extent I can no longer do this!I can now slip a thin coin between my teeth with my jaw closed. Thirdly when I chew my food my teeth tend to squeak causing me some embarrassment.

My dentist tells me that my bite has changed and that the only contact now is with my two rear molars on each side. She offers no treatment for this other than warning that I face problems in the future.

I am 64 years old. I have all my teeth and they are generally in good condition. I have three questions what is the likely cause of this change, secondly will the changes continue and thirdly can anything be done to restore my former bite?

Hi
Sounds like you have some bite problems, that may be associated with tooth wear. It’s difficult to advise you properly without a detailed examination but there are solutions to these types of problems. My advie would be to come and see us or another cosmetic or restorative dentist that has a lot of experience in bite problems and in reconstructing the bite. You would then find out all the possible solutions to your concerns
