Should I have cosmetic treatment or just settle for dentures?

Q.

I am a 65 years old female with quite crooked bottom and top teeth. I have twice had my top front teeth treated, the last time (about 10 years ago) when I had a veneer on one tooth to bring it into line and a crown on the other one because it was crooked. However I have always thought this crown was quite large and didn’t look right – this was made obvious when none of my friends ever mentioned that I’d had anything done! I would like to have something done with this top tooth but don’ t know what – my dentist who is new to the surgery suggests visalign on my top and bottom but I cant afford it – a few hundred is my lot! I have thought about having them all out and a set of dentures – my husband isn’t happy! My bottom teeth (although I have had teeth whitening treatment on them) are still marked on the very bottoms Should I just give up at my age?

What can a cosmetic dentist do to make my teeth look brighter and my gaps smaller?

Friday, November 4th, 2011
Q.

Hi there, about 8 years ago I was unfortunate enough to be injured by a stranger in an unprovoked attack. My two front teeth were broken, one so far up the nerve was showing. My dentist had to perform root canal and I have porcelain caps on the two front teeth and a white composite on the teeth next to them. I have had many problems since then with these teeth but more recently I had a gum infection above these teeth due to my gums being swollen and not being able to clean into the caps properly. After a course of antibiotics and the hygienest clearing the plaque that had gathered above and inbetween these teeth i have been left with big gaps between my gums and teeth. My dentist said there is nothing they can do and I will have to just live with this. Is this true or can I go to a dentist that specialises in cosmetics and have the four teeth (caps and composites) replaced so they dont look as ‘dirty’ and the gaps arent so big and unsightly. I have really good oral hygiene and have never had any other work needed done to my teeth in my 30 years. A response would be much appreciated as it is really getting me down that my lovely teeth will now be like this forever. Many thanks for any advice you can give me.

Help me to design the perfect smile, are veneer materials ‘the’ final word?

Tuesday, September 6th, 2011
Q.

I am seraching for a good cosmetic clinic in London or abroad. I found what it seemed a very nice clinic (well, their website looks great, the prices are quite high 825 per veneer and they seem to help to design a perfect smile taking in consideration facial features and many aesthetic factors)

However after some extra research I ve found that their veneers are just normal porcelain veneers not lumieers.

Therefore I think there are quite expensive considering I can get in other clinic lumieers for a much cheaper price than their veeners.

I thought the more I spend the better the result.Since I m spending a lot of money and but myself in debt with my bank I want to make sure to get the best result

I would very appreciate if you you could suggest me a clinic where they can help me to design the perfect smile im looking for .

I probably need about 22 veneers and i wouldn t like to spend more than 800 per veneeer.

Thank you in advance for any suggestion you could give me.

What can I go about my gummy smile?

Wednesday, August 24th, 2011
Q.

Hi I have suffered with a gummy smile all my life. When I was 13 years old I asked what could be done and the only option was to have my bone under my nose lifted which I didn’t want and I am now 30 years old and desperate to look normal. I’ve been doing lots of reseach ‘ve been to my dentist who referred me to a periodontist who said he can’t help me and to contact a cosmetic dentist. I’m finding this very daunting as I don’t know which is the right treatment or who to go to. I’m really confused as to what I should be looking for and asking . I remember being told I have a 5mm excess gum and I hope there is something that can be done.

I need an oral surgeon, could you recommend one in the South London area?

Thursday, August 11th, 2011
Q.

Hi, My 3 month old daughter has been diagnosed with a tight labial fraenulum (lip tie). We’ve been told that it means that she cannot lift her upper lip properly when feeding and that there is a risk that she will get a gap between her front teeth. We have been trying to look for a dentist or oral surgeon in our area (South East London) who could carry out the frenectomy but we’re not sure where to start. Could you help us and maybe recommend competent practitioners who would successfully perform the operation?
Thanks you.

Bruxism has ruined my once perfect teeth, what can I do?

Wednesday, August 10th, 2011
Q.

Hi,

When I was in my teens I was told I had perfect teeth. However, I have developed bruxism. I’m not sure when it happened but I became aware that it was affecting teeth about 4 years ago, I am 27 now. My two front teeth have worn down and I now never smile with my teeth as I am embaressed about my teeth. I visited my dentist a year ago having tried to ignore it for a few years. I was told that there was nothing I could do but get a mouth guard. I’ve been using over the counter mouth guards now for a year, but I don’t want to have to do that for the rest of my life and I also like to have my teeth fixed as I think they look so short, they are now not connecting with my bottom teeth I have noticed recently. I’m thinking of visit my doctor to see if he could refer me to anyone. Could you please offer any advice as it is really affecting my confidence and everyday life.

Thanks

I would like a Hollywood smile. What are my options?

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011
Q.

hi there dont really know what treatment I need as my teeth are fine but I have gaps inbetween the bottom set. They are very discoloured & i would basically like a hollywood smile as I havent smiled in pictures for years as i am so embarressed about my teeth. can you recommend what I need to look into & how much it would roughly cost. I use to be a smoker so that hasnt help. I am just so fed up of covering my mouth everytime I speak to someone my confidence is so low due to my teeth. I have a very special occasion coming up and want to look perfect & I know with beautiful teeth my confidence will grow. After having my 1st child I had the gaps filled in my top set due to gum infection this was on the nhs but still not happy . my dentist has said that my teeth are very strong but they just look so unattractive. Nobody has commented my husband thinks I am perfect but without a beautiful smile I just dont feel it. I have no idea how to go about this & what I need done. I am a mum of 2 & 32 years old & do feel guily about spending on my teeth but I know If i get this done family and friends will see a big diffrence in my confidence. thank you so much for your time.

Want veneers replaced and need implants. How can I be sure of the right dentist?

Monday, May 16th, 2011
Q.

I would like to have the 2 veneers replaced on my front teeth. Both natural teeth have silver fillings which now give a grey impression. My veneers are about 15 years old though.

Also I have a missing tooth (top right) and beside that I have a temporary crown (and bridge). The problem is my gum has receded and I would like a skin graft to resolve this. So I also need an implant & crown .

This treatment will be a huge investment for me as the cost will be high. How can I be certain of finding the right dentist & being happy with the results?

Many thanks in advance for your help.

Can my Gummy Smile be Corrected?

Friday, May 13th, 2011
Q.

Hi Dr Hughes,

Thank you for the information you sent me regarding options for correcting a gummy smile. I will send you a photo privately.

I do, in fact, have an overbite, and have always had it. Could you explain a bit more about the jaw repositioning procedure, the risks and also recovery time?

Lastly, I have a bit of a narrow face and a longish chin, would jaw repositioning exaggerate this and push my jaw out to correct the overbite? If so, what further procedure could be done to balance this?

Thanks again for your help. I look forward to hearing from you.
