Can my Gummy Smile be Corrected?

Q.
Hi Dr Hughes,

Thank you for the information you sent me regarding options for correcting a gummy smile. I will send you a photo privately.

I do, in fact, have an overbite, and have always had it. Could you explain a bit more about the jaw repositioning procedure, the risks and also recovery time?

Lastly, I have a bit of a narrow face and a longish chin, would jaw repositioning exaggerate this and push my jaw out to correct the overbite? If so, what further procedure could be done to balance this?

Thanks again for your help. I look forward to hearing from you.

A.
Hi

To have your questions about these procedures answered correctly and accurately I’d advise that you come and see our Specialist Orhtodontiost and then subsequently we’d refert you to our recommended Maxillo-facial surgeon to discuss the potential surgical corrections. Your questions are beyond my field of expertise.

Many thanks for sending the photos, they were extremely helpful

Please call our reception team and they can help organise the consultations

Kind regards

Mark

Hi, I was hoping I could find out some information on what steps I should take to get started with getting my teeth fixed. They are in a really bad state now and have been for quite some time, i’ve had a phobia of going to the dentist since I was very young and it’s never shifted, then throughoutmy teens I fell into poor dental hygiene, smoked and was always drinking loads of fizzy drinks, sometimes even can after can each day. My teeth are absolutely awful now, and brushing now is painful as most of my teeth are broken and rotted at the top and far too sensitive to touch, even eating is difficult, but I think the worse thing to deal with has been some sort of depression I seem to have developed with not being able to smile or talk without covering my mouth. I can’t afford to pay outright all at once, so I just wondered about the 0% finance scheme I saw on the website, and whether Iwould be eligible for that, and whether you would know if perhaps I would be able to get anyth ing done on the nhs first and then maybe the rest doneat your surgery if perhaps that would cut the costs. I was hoping you couldadvise me? Thanks

I am extremely phobic and have not received any dental treatment for 17 years. I have major dental problems as a result. Six of my teeth have broken to the gumline (i had root canal treatment in these years ago. I’m sure I also need extractions and fillings. One of the broken teeth is near the front and I am desperate to rectify this one especially, even temporarily untilremaining treatments have been done. I visited a dentist two days ago thatprofessed to have extensive experience with anxiouspatients. However I felt that all she wanted was to get me into the chair and out of the door. Shehad no interest in listening to why I felt so anxious (tears, shaking etc)and did not ask anything about my previous dental experiences which I feelis important. I was so upset, I froze and could not express myself anyway.Sorry for this rambling email, I hope to hear from you soon.Via email would be best for me.

Hello i am an english citizen living in norway and i am thinking of takinga trip to London to get some dental work done. I have three horizontal wisdom teeth that i need removed. I also need an implant for a lateral incisoron my right side. That are my most pressing concerns. I am also missing a second premollar (right side) and a first mollar (left side). I also have acertain amount of dental phobia. Due to this fact i have not gone to the dentist for several years. I know you can not give me an exact price for allthis with out seeing me. But i would need an aproximate price. Thank you somuch for listening.

Do you do procedures for ‘gummy smiles’? I am a 19 year old female and when i smile i show a lot of my gums. People have only started picking up onthis since i’ve got older and now i’m becoming more self conscious. Is there anything you can do please?

I was wondering if it is possible to change the distance which my top ;ip moves when smiling? I do not have massive gums or anything like that, it is just that my lip moves too far up. Is there anything i can do it stop this as i now hate getting pictures taken. I have search the internet but only get gum reduction as the suggestion which i do think i require as i already have a large amount of tooth showing.

Julianne Says :

You can research a treatment called ‘lip repositioning surgery’ as this procedure prevents the lip moving too much when you smile. Regards

Hi, I have a ‘gummy smile’ and I am looking to get this rectified. I have searched the internet and read about gum contouring and lip repositioning. Idon’t have small teeth, therefore I think it may be the lip repositioningsurgery that I need. Do you offer this and if so, what is the cost? Many thanks,

I have receeding gums – which have been stable now for many years – I’m now 50 and the gums are healthy, however I dislike the look of the recession. Can the gums be cut and pulled down, and if so, what is the % success rate of this type of operation? I’ve been told that the recession was due to excessive brushing in the past. I now use a sonicare brush for the past 10 years and the recession has stayed at the same place for that length of time.

Donna Says :

If you have recession, then a possible option is a soft tissue graft to replace the tissue. Of course a full examination would be required to see if you are suitable for this procedure.

Hello i just wanted to ask what does the gum contouring procedure involve. I am looking for it for my daughter who is really, really self conscious about her smile and i feel that this could really help her. Is the procedure done under local anesthetic or sedation? Would it be possible to have it under sedation, because she is a little bit nervous too. thanks doctor

December 16th, 2011 at 08:47 PM
Brayden Says :

Depending upon the amount of contouring that is needed would determine if sedation is necessary. If it involves the bone underneath the gum tissue then possibly sedation would be indicated.

Is gum contouring good for receding gums my to top teeth have started to recede one more then the other and I’m very paranoid when I smile? Also would like a consultation on having a brace on my bottom teeth as they are slightly crooked my dentist said my gums are to weak maybe there would be another route to go down seen some of your work and I am very impressed.
