I’m dreading the extraction because I have low clotting factor IX, any advice?

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010
Q.
Dear Dr Moore, I have had root canal treatment about 15 years ago. In the last few years, I have had a few re-fillings on this tooth (not canal again). Now all the filling has come out and following an abscess/infection, the little bit of tooth that was there, had to be removed to avoid pain when eating. The dentist here in Cyprus advised me to have the root removed. The problem now is that I am told I have to remove what is left (the root), and as I have low clotting factor iX, I dread having this extraction. Is there anything I can do to avoid exraction, as I have had such bad bleeding problems with teeth extracting inthe past. This is a nightmare for me. Especially now that I am in Cyprus for a few months. Please can you advise? Thank you.,

Is it true that if you have a crown it’s difficult to colour match it with the rest of your teeth?

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010
Q.
One of my main front teeth was broken off several years ago, and I had a root canal and bonding done. The tooth is now sort of a grey color, and I went to see a dentist about possibly redoing the bonding work for cosmetic purposes(functionally the tooth is fine). He told me that he would not do bonding on that tooth because of the grey color. I thought that bonding would cover the grey, but apparently not. He told me that he would suggest a crown over the tooth. I have read a lot of information however that would seem to indicate that when crowing only one main front tooth it’s difficult to do a proper color match. Is this true? Would the crown be your suggestion as well, or are there other options that I should check into?,

Do you think it is actually worth taking the antibiotics?

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010
Q.
Dear Dr Moore I have a chronic infection in/around a root canal treated tooth which my dentist thinks is probably cracked, my dentist has x rayed this recently and is happy to leave it. I asked if I could try antibiotics, she was happy to give me a prescription for Metronidazole but said it would only get rid of the infection in the short term and it would come back. My question therefore is do you think it is actually worth taking the antibiotics and if I do is there any chance however remote that the infection could disappear permanently? I am not keen on taking antibiotics if they are not necessary and my dentist did seem rather ambivalent about them. Many thanks for your advice and kind regards.

Am I experiencing such intense pain because of impacted wisdom teeth?

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010
Q.
Good morning Dr. Moore, Years ago, I went to see an orthodontist who had told me there wouldn’t be space for my wisdom teeth to grow in and that I would need them removed. This has never happened and they have caused me considerable pain at random intervals since they came some-what in. Recently, I have been experiences a shooting, intense pain stemming from a spot in my skull behind my right ear. This pain is very intense and the right side of my neck bunches every time it happens– which since yesterday morning, has been every minute or so. Could the cause of this pain be my impacted wisdom teeth? I read on this site they can cause cysts or tumours.. Thank you,

Do you think I’m suitable for dental implants?

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010
Q.
Hi I am 30 years old and had a plate put in about 5 years ago to cover 4 missing teeth in my front lower jaw. This was due to very poor oral hygiene on my part when I was growing up. There was a concern at the time that one of the teeth the plate anchors onto was also weak. Unfortunately, that tooth is now due to be removed. I do smoke about 2 cigarettes a day (trying to quit), I brush regularly and only drink water and try my best to avoid sugar as a result of all this but I feel as though I’m fighting a losing battle and I don’t want to lose anymore teeth. The plate can hurt when eating food and it is difficult to take in and out every day. I spoke with a consultant at the NHS yesterday and he was totally dismissive of the idea of implants. I know I would have to go private, that’s not a problem, but he told me not to bother wasting my money. I am concerned, however, that the plate is putting pressure on my other teeth and is causing me too much discomfort. I’m desperate to get this sorted out and I wanted to get a second opinion. I realise you’re a leading expert in this field and I was wondering if you could offer me any advice as to the best course of action? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Yours,
,
