What Would Be The Better Option For Me A Dental Implant Or A Resin Bonded Bridge?

Monday, June 16th, 2014
Q.

Hi. My dentist has recommended a resin bonded bridge over an implant for my top left lateral tooth, as he does not believe the space of 6.5 millimeters is sufficient to enable an implant to be successfully inserted. Is this correct? The internet suggests that the minimum is nearer to 5 millimeters (allowing for 1 millimeter gap either side of the tooth).
He has also expressed concern that the bone may need grafting as traditionally the bone is thin in this area and usually inserts only last 10-12 years (with added risk of infection) opposed to the resin bond bridge which lasts up to 8 years normally. Again are these assertions correct/normal?

I’ve Been Told That I Have To Get Used To My Bulky Crown. Could You Tell Me If This Is Correct Or Not?

Monday, June 16th, 2014
Q.

Good evening Dr Hughes. I hope you can help me determine whether I’ve had bad dental treatment or not? About 3 months ago I’ve had a crown placed on my upper front tooth. The temporary crown was fantastic and matched it well, unfortunately the permanent one is noticeably larger than the other teeth and it sticks out. My dentist told me it’s because my teeth are crowded and that I’ll get used to it.
I really disagree with him and have tried to get used to it but to no avail. Is it possible for me to send a picture to you to see if my dentist is trying to cover up bad dental work please? Many thanks.

My Front Tooth Is Impacted. Is There Any Way To Correct This Through Surgery Or Any Other Corrective Treatment?

Friday, June 13th, 2014
Q.

Hello Mark. I hope you can help me. My front tooth is impacted after a milk tooth was forcibly pulled by my primary school teacher. Can a front impacted tooth be pushed out through surgery? I was told in the US that a good dental surgeon could do it. Or can it be extracted and replaced with a dental implant? Also another tooth is cracked. Is there any assistance you could give me? I am not working is there anything that can be done? Thank you for your time.

My Jaw Keeps Clicking And Is Worse In The Morning. Any Ideas On What This Could Be And How To Fix It?

Friday, June 13th, 2014
Q.

Hello Mark. I have arthritis in my jaw but have not been seen or treated by a doctor. My jaw always clicks and is usually worse in the mornings (possibly grinding my teeth when I sleep). Today my jaw is very painful on the right side and it is getting worse as the day goes on. My bite has suddenly changed this evening and won’t go back. Any ideas what this could be and how to fix it? Or where to start with getting treated? Thank you.

My Wisdom Tooth Is Very Brittle But I’m Scared Of What Will Happen. What Should I Do?

Thursday, June 12th, 2014
Q.

Hello. I have a wisdom tooth on the left of my jaw. It is quite broken and parts of it are down to the gum-line. It has a hole in the middle where my filing has fallen out and it is very brittle and breaks a lot. I’m currently in a lot of pain with it and need to visit the dentist but I’m very scared of the dentist. What will happen? Will it be painful? Will they have to pull my tooth out and as I’m scared it will hurt will they be able to give me anything? I hope you can help me understand what will happen. Thank you.

Hello. I Would Like To Have Treatment For Hypermobile Lip. Could You Help Me Find Someone?

Thursday, June 12th, 2014
Q.

Hello. I hope you can help me Dr Hughes. I would like to have treatment for hypermobile lip. It is something that has bothered me for a long while.
When I smile or laugh, around 8mm of my gum is exposed. I asked my dentist but said he couldn’t really help as gum contouring would probably not reduce my gum enough. I’ve tried botox injections but they didn’t work either.
I’m having trouble trying to find a surgeon or someone who would perform this sort of treatment.
I am happy to travel to London, Birmingham, Manchester etc, Can you help?
Thank you for your time.

My Teeth Are Discoloured And This Bothers Me. What Are My Best Affordable Options For This?

Wednesday, June 11th, 2014
Q.

My teeth are not the best they are not straight but I don’t mind that but they are very discoloured from medication as a child. My dentist says I have very good health teeth but the colour bothers me so much that I very rarely go out and when I do I try wear something that covers my mouth. I haven’t been in a photo in 2 years because I’m to ashamed of what my teeth look like. And the worst thing I do is mumble a lot so that people don’t see my teeth as I’m talking. It has been a few years now that they have been discoloured and it really effects my confidence when going anywhere because I always think that people are looking at my teeth and talking behind my back about it saying look at his teeth if you don’t brush yours they will turn out like that even though I do brush and floss. I work full time in a call centre so that no one can see my teeth. I do have a okay wage but no where near enough to afford thousands of pounds or all new teeth. So is there anything that could be done through the NHS or anything else?

I Have An Extremely Small Mouth Which Depresses Me. Is There Anything That Can Be Done To Make My Mouth Bigger?

Tuesday, June 10th, 2014
Q.

Hello Mark. I’d really like to know if you can help me as I have an extremely small mouth. It is about 4.5-5cm wide when I relax it. This makes me extremely self-conscious all the time, and I really despise my face because of this. I cannot do a natural ‘toothy smile’ as it always looks way too forced, but even my closed mouth smile looks awfully small. Is there any kind of procedure or surgery that can be done to make my mouth bigger/wider, or anything I can wear or do? Thank you in advance.

I Feel A Throbbing Pain Ever Since My Crown Was Put Back In. Do You Have Any Idea Of What The Problem Might Be?

Tuesday, June 10th, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Hughes. I’d like your help and advice if it’s not too much bother. My front crown, which is about 8 years old, it fell out and my dentist stuck it back in. From then it hasn’t felt quite right. I am having a throbbing pain in it. Is the nerve still alive when you have a crown put? I am also getting root canal treatment on three molars not had them crowned yet but this hasn’t given me a lot of pain just the normal, after this type of treatment. All the pain is in my front crown. Do you have any idea of what the problem might be? Thank you for your time.
