Why Is My Tooth So Sharp?

Thursday, September 18th, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Hughes,
I have a question to ask you about one of my bottom teeth and I hope you can help me. Over the past couple of months it has been very sharp and cuts my tongue whenever I slide it across my bottom teeth. The dentist I regularly go to has filed it down to give it a smoother feel, but the sharpness is still constantly there. I also got tooth bonding done after it was filed, and the sharpness is still there. What do you suggest this could be, and what would I be able to do to get rid of this sharpness on my tooth? Thank you for your time.

I hope you can help me.

What is the Best Treatment for Severely Misaligned Teeth?

Thursday, September 18th, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Hughes. What can I do about my situation? I have an extremely misaligned teeth, and it’s very embarrassing to smile. How much would it cost to get my misaligned teeth straightened? My teeth look like a zigzag road on both the top and the bottom, and I really think I’d need an extreme makeover to transform my smile. What am I supposed to do to achieve this? I’m  28 years old, and I’d ideally like a short-term teeth-straightening solution. The problem is, I don’t know if I can afford the cost of that kind of straightening treatment. what would you suggest the best treatment for me would be? Thanks.

How Much Should a CEREC Cad/Cam Inlay Cost?

Wednesday, September 17th, 2014
Q.

Dear Dr Hughes, I have just had an estimate for £899.00 to have the old filling removed from a molar and a CEREC CAD/CAM inlay / overlay procedure carried out to the same molar. Does this sound to you to be a fair estimate for this treatment? I have not decided yet whether to go ahead with this procedure. I would very much like to have the procedure done, but it seems quite expensive to me. The filling that is in place, but loose at the moment, is the older mercury amalgam type. Does this make any difference to the cost of this procedure? Many thanks, I hope you can help me come to a decision.

Would it be Possible to Have an Implant to Replace a Broken Crown?

Wednesday, September 17th, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Hughes. My crown (second from middle) recently became loose. My dentist removed it and stuck it temporarily, but it came out the next day. About ten years ago my crown broke off and the then dentist replaced it by putting a post into the tooth, and this has now apparently broken. My current dentist has told me that he now cannot drill into my root and crown and so I need to consider having the root out and a bridge put in, or would it be possible to have an implant? The root seems to be OK from what I can see, it’s not loose. I don’t understand why the dentist cannot put in another post. Can you make any suggestions please?

How Strong are Replacement Teeth, and How Long Should They Last?

Tuesday, September 16th, 2014
Q.

Dear Dr Gambroudes. How strong are replacement teeth? Also, how long are expected to last? I had one of my wisdom teeth replaced, but it came loose and fell out after two years. Now I only eat with the left side of my mouth. I feel very uncomfortable with the tooth missing, what should I do? I feel that I should replace it to enable me feel comfortable and enjoy my meals. I will also want to change my dentist.
I will also want to know how often one needs to visit the dentist so as to take care of the teeth before any problems occur. What is cosmetic teeth surgery? How often should one go for teeth cleaning? Thank you.

Could Veneers Have Worked Instead of 4 Years of Braces?

Tuesday, September 16th, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Hughes. I am 44 years old and had traditional braces on for four years. They have just been removed and now I have demineralization white spots on my teeth around where the brackets were. I was told that these spots are permanent and cannot be removed. The dentist recommended veneers, after 4 years and $6000 worth of braces. Could I have just gotten the veneers without the braces 4 years ago? Is it true the the white spots are permanent and cannot be removed? If so, what are the major differences between the veneers: durathin, Lumineers, porcelain, composite, MAC, Da Vinci. Thank you.

Could I Have All My Teeth Extracted and All On 4 Done on the Same Day?

Tuesday, September 16th, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Hughes. I have extremely bad teeth because of drug abuse and from never looking after them properly in the past. There are more fillings than there is enamel now, and I also have seven crowns. I am not in any pain or discomfort or anything like that and I have been looking after my mouth properly now that I am drug- and alcohol- free. Would it be possible for me to have all of my teeth extracted and get All On 4 done on the same day, or would I have to wait for the gums to heal before a dentist could start the All On 4? Thank you for your time, I hope you can answer my question.

Is There an Inexpensive Product I Can Use as a Retainer?

Monday, September 15th, 2014
Q.

Good afternoon Dr Hughes. I am currently undergoing orthodontic treatment but will not be able to afford retainers due to hard times with my family at the moment. I would like for my teeth to stay straight and not shift back to what they used to look like. I’ve looked online for a long time looking for something that I could do that would keep my teeth in place after brace treatment. Would a night guard bought from a store work as a retainer? Is there any inexpensive product I can buy from a store that would work as a retainer? Please help, I get my braces taken off in a week’s time. Thank you in advance.

Are Veneers a Good Option for My Front Teeth?

Monday, September 15th, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Hughes. My front teeth are awful!
A few years ago I had a dental abscess, and I had to have a hole drilled into the front of my front tooth to allow the infection to drain out, and this was then filled in by my dentist. Since then, the tooth has now gone black. My dentist has bleached the inside, but I am still very self conscious about it. Would veneers work for me? I would probably need the 4 front teeth doing.  Do you have any other suggestions? By the way, I am a very nervous patient. I also live in North Wales, with Wrexham or Chester being the nearest town. Thank you.

Do You Have Any Advice for Dental Phobic Patients?

Friday, September 12th, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Hughes. Could you please advise me on getting my teeth treated? I’m so scared of dentists because of a bad experience I had in the past, but now I really need dental work done. I can’t even look at people right in their face when I speak to them. And I also need assurance that the work I need can be done without me having to be put to sleep, because that’s the main fear I have. Thank you, I have totally let myself down by letting it go this long without dental treatment. I don’t have one full tooth in my mouth. I would just really appreciate some help and friendly advice. Thank you very much.
