Which Replacement Teeth Option Would be Right for Me?

Thursday, February 5th, 2015
Q.

Hello, I am a 63 year old man and my teeth are in need of a holiday. I am afraid to go ahead and have them removed because many years ago I had a partial palate made which just made me vomit so I never wore it. What can be done these days to prevent this? Once my teeth are removed there is no going back and because of my profession I need to look at least half decent and being on stage and vomiting my teeth out over an audience may not go over very well! Hope you can help. Thank you.

How Can I Get the Perfect Celebrity Smile?

Wednesday, February 4th, 2015
Q.

Hi there. I’ve always had trouble with my teeth since the age of about six when I got about 13 baby teeth taken out as they were discoloured and rotten due to the amount of fizzy juice I drank. I was wanting to look into getting white veneers as my current teeth are a bit discoloured and one front tooth is broken in two places, and I’ve also had root treatment on that tooth too. I’m basically looking to get the “perfect celebrity” white smile. What would your advice be?
Many thanks.

Can Healthy Teeth be Taken Out?

Wednesday, February 4th, 2015
Q.

I have had a very expensive bridge attached to a tooth which twice developed an infection/abscess. It cost £1000+. It’s all gone wrong and I didn’t even have it for a year. So now I have another tooth, 4th from the front at the top. It is crumbling and sharp/jagged, the opposite number of the now big gap. I have a teaching role and work in media/sports, so my smile is very important, hence the investment in the failed bridge. My question is: I have six front upper teeth, my lower teeth are sharp, jagged, worn out and crumbling. At what point can I insist that I can have my upper teeth removed to facilitate a top denture? My dentist says he cannot take out healthy teeth or he would be struck off. Your comments would be appreciated.

What Alternatives Are There for Implants?

Friday, January 30th, 2015
Q.

Hello Dr Hughes. I’m 56 years old and have lost half of my teeth and about to lose two more.
I believe that I am not suitable for implants on metal spikes as I have lost to much bone for this procedure.
I have heard about a procedure where the teeth are glued in. Could you tell me what this procedure is called and what I might be expected to pay? Thank you for any help you can give.

What is the Best Method for Whitening Teeth, and How Much Does it Cost?

Friday, January 30th, 2015
Q.

Hi,

I have had fairly discoloured teeth ever since my adult teeth came through. I have not been taking the best care of them through my teenage years, and I am desperate for white teeth. It was a medicinal thing that caused the discolour I was told, or it may have been hereditary.

Basically, after all these years I am finally making the decision to pay to get them fixed. They are fairly straight and it is just around 4 teeth that are discoloured, however I would love to have a proper smile and it is affecting my life in a negative way. I’m afraid to smile.

Please could you let me know how much roughly it would cost to fix, and which would be the best way of whitening my teeth?

My Son’s Crown Fell Off. Should He Get Another Crown or an Implant?

Friday, January 30th, 2015
Q.

Good afternoon. My son who is 24 fell as a child and broke one of his two front teeth. A local dentist gave him an amateur-ish crown which has never looked right. Yesterday it fell off and he isn’t sure if the way forward is a new crown or an implant. However, money is a slight problem and I don’t know how much it would cost or who could do the procedure . He is speaking at my mum’s funeral on February 3rd and is devastated that it will look dreadful! Please can you advise? I’m worried mother as you hear so many dreadful stories of cosmetic surgery going wrong.

Why Is My Tooth in So Much Pain?

Friday, January 30th, 2015
Q.

About a year ago I had a filling replaced. When the numbness wore off I suffered intense shooting pains in that tooth. The dentist filed it off, telling me he’d left one corner too high. But it did not work. So they told me it was the new white filling and replaced it. I still had the pain. So they decided that when they’d replaced the filling, they must have opened a nerve ending. I had root canal done, but still suffered the pain. I went back and had a second root canal, which stopped the intense shooting pain, but has left the tooth extremely sensitive to heat. I can’t eat or drink anything over body temperature on that tooth. Cold temperatures give me a similar problem. It’s not sore while I’m eating, but when it warms up again that’s when I feel it. It feels like it’s deep in my tooth, not just a surface pain, and extremely sore, like a dull ache, not sharp or shooting. They gave me antibiotics and a mouth guard, telling me I grind my teeth, but 6 months use of the guard and I still have the same level of ache. Do you have any idea why this might be? I’ve lost all confidence in the dentist, as before the original replacement filling, I had no pain what so ever. I feel they caused this.

What Kind of Treatment is Best for Closing Gaps in the Teeth?

Friday, January 23rd, 2015
Q.

Hello Dr Hughes. My teeth have all got gaps in between them, on both the top and bottom sets of teeth. I would like to get my teeth put together as fast as it could be. So I was wondering what treatment would I need and how much do you think it would cost? Adding to this, I was considering what type of pain would I be going through and how long would the surgery take, would it be weeks or days? Thank you, please get back to me.

Where Can I Go for Orthodontic Treatment?

Wednesday, January 21st, 2015
Q.

Hello. I started to visit a dentist about year and a half ago and was told I had to go into hospital to have a tooth out before starting orthodontic treatment. Since I had this tooth removed, I’ve got no further with starting treatment and have just been pushed from pillar to post, visiting 3-4 different dentists and paying for consultations and x-rays but getting no further. I’m 44 years old and don’t want go leave it too late. I really hope you can help me or advise me about where I can go. It’s been quite upsetting time as i feel no one wants too help me. I’ve got a big family wedding in two and a half years time, so I would really like to start treatment as soon as possible. Thank you.

Which Veneers Would Be Best for Me?

Wednesday, January 14th, 2015
Q.

Hi there Dr Hughes. Please can you tell me which veneers I would need? I am on a small budget but require veneers for two of my teeth on either side.

I want something that will last and I am also a coffee and tea addict. My teeth are discolored and it is getting me down. One of my front teeth has a cap on it and I’m not sure if I am able to wear veneers. Also does it hurt? Is there any way I’d be able to get free help? I also have an exemption card. Please can you let me know the cost thanks again?  Many thanks.
