Q. my dentist recently x rayed my teeth finding inflamation under one of my crowns which is supported b a post he said i may lose the tooth .he gave me two options to try and retreat it giving a 50%chance of success or leave it and keep a close eye on it . i am worried the inflamation will spread to other teeth . what is your advice to me .
A. Try the retreatment to prevent the posibility of the inflammation spreading then review the tooth in a few months to see how its settled

Q. Hello Dr Moore, I am 42 years old. I had my mouth half full with crowns by 20 yrs old. By 34, many were needing to be replaced. I begged the dentist to give me an upper plate. I made a good case and I got it. He made me 4 or 5 before I got a good fit. I still have to use a large amount of Fixodent daily to keep it in. Now, at 42 I have had most of my bottom teeth extracted and Im down to 5 in the front. THere are no other teeth/replacements on the bottom at all. The plan is to remove the 5th tooth and I will be left with 4 in the front, and get a partial bottom plate. And make a new top plate to fix the new bite. How will the teeth in the back stay down? I will need to glue down with fixodent? Will it somehow hook on to my front teeth? People Ive known with this, had hooks onto back teeth which I do not have. Please let me know. At this point I just want to be able to chew again.
A. Anything put into the lower jaw will help you to chew although a denture is very difficult to wear if there are only a few teeth to anchor it in place. You might want to consider a denture held in place with dental implants this maybe your best solution in the lower jaw in the long term

Q. i have two large front teeth and absolutely detest them. its giving me really low self esteem and i would really like to do something about them. What are my options and honestly how much will this kind of treatment cost? My two front teeth are longer than my “wedding finger nail” (short) just to give you a rough idea. im getting increasingly depressed about it what can i do?
A. The cost depends on what you have done. If they need veneers this will normally cost from around £500 per tooth. If the teeth need removal then you could be looking at £500 for a small denture or £4000 for fixed implant supported crowns.

Q. Dear Dr. Moore, I have four crowns (in the front in the top rig)that are now showing a black line and so need replacing with Porcelain ones, but also my gum is quite dark and not pink. Is it possible to change the posts that are in the gum, or is it possible to lighten the gum in any way? Thank you for your help! Regards
A. Hello the gum can’t really be changed but the posts might be taken out and replaced with White posts and porcelain crowns

Q. I’ve had cosmetic crowns placed on my 6 upper front teeth (eye tooth to eye tooth). There were multiple issues and I am having them redone. The issue that I’m faced with now is whether or not to have the back of the crown porcelain or metal. If I go with porcelain, I may need another root canal (they will have to remove more of my tooth to make the back thinner). If I go with the metal, I’m afraid that it will show when I laugh or yawn and that later it may look dark. What would you advise?
A. It is unusual to see the back of upper front crowns and metal would be stronger, if you are very worried about the apperance you may have to risk needing a root canal under the porcelain crown

Q. I am aged seventy two and I have had upper crowns and bridges for about twenty five years, now two of the teeth are crumbling inter palatally. This involves the left central incisor and the canine tooth. The remedy which has been suggested is to cut of my bridge between the central incisors, have the teeth removed on the upper left and then have implants. Until I get a new bridge I will need to wear dentures, the estimated cost for this is £9k. There will be two dentists involved in this; one says that I must stop smoking and the other dentist say that I do not need to. At present I am hoping that “cosmetic bonding” is an alternative. My questions are. Could “cosmetic bonding” prevent the offending teeth from additional crumbling? If implants are the only solution, will I need to stop smoking? Many thanks.
A. Bonding is a good temporary solution although if the teeth need to come out then it might not work that well. If you have implants stopping smoking will help improve the success rate.

Q. Hi, Today at work one of my back teeth has cracked- it has a 10 year old filling inside. I’ve been advised it’ll probably need a crown. However I’m petrified of the dentist and have to be sedated when I go. How much will the work cost and if I took out private dental insurance, would it cover the work? I know it’ll be about £400 but that’s half my wages so won’t be able to afford it! Please advise in anyway possible. Many Thanks
A. Thanks for your questions, I am unsure as to whether taking out a dental insurance policy at this stage would help, as the need for treatment already exists? However, many detal practice are able to offer payment plans, such an interest free credit. I would suggest that you ask your dentist about the payment plans they have available, or alternatively reasearch dentists in your area who offer suitable schemes. I hope this helps.

Q. I’m 17(nearly 18) but I’m still in full time education (colledge). My teeth severly affect my confidence, I never smile in photos, I have 2 chipped front teeth from rough play as a child and still have 4 worn down baby teeth where my adult teeth haven’t grown through and according to an x ray aren’t there. Is it possible to get vineers/crowns on the NHS?

Q. Hi Dr Moore My dentist recently fitted a new (procera inceram) crown for me to replace an old crown. It is my big front incisor on the top. He has done a good job with the shape and colour but I can still see a blue line at the margn. My natural smile shows my gum line and the main reason I asked for a new crown was that several friends got crowns that seem to be like real teeth and have subgingival margins. When I asked my dentist for a new crown I made it clear money was not a consideration and that cosmetic appearance was my priority regardless of cost. But on fitting my new crown it is most definitely at least half a mil short of my gums and not much of an improvement over my last crown. Should I sack the dentist I have had since a child on the grounds he is a dinosaur. or should I quietly go behind his back?
A. Go back to him to voice your concerns, it maybe that the crown could be remade with a more sub-gingival margin.

Q. Hi, I had a really bad diet throughout my youth years and now i’m in to my late 20’s it is catching up with me (I suffered a food disorder and now i have cured that over the last year and massively improved my diet i also suffered from regurgitation due to the poor diet and stomach acid coming back up has not helped the situation) I have lost 3 lower bottom teeth (on my left side) And have massive decay on the bottom 3 on the right (I think on my next visit i will have to have an extraction on one) What options do i have as i really need to rebuild the back teeth in my mouth or i fear further trouble in the future! Any help/advice will be of great benefit! Thank you for your time!
A. If you can save the teeth on the right you could try crowns. If not then you may need to consider either removable teeth- a denture, or fixed false teeth – dental implants.Implants are probably the best solution as fixed teeth tend to be easy to maintain and are generally more comfortable.

Q. Dear Dr Moore I am Writing concerning a special case of cosmetic dentistry i am interested in. I am looking for a way of reshaping 8 of my teeth (the top and bottom canines and top and bottom lateral incisors). I wanted to consult you as to the feasibility of this, and secondly if it is a service you can provide as it is reshaping the teeth rather than trying to return them to a normal shape. The effect i am after is for the canines themselves to be slightly expended (approximately 1 or 2mm) and both them and the lateral incisors to be more pointed. The intent is to be a subtle effect and must be acceptable for still eating/chewing etc. I realize in itself this request is rather unusual, but i was hoping even if you yourself cannot provide this service you might be able to point me in the direction of those who could. On that note, if you can provide this service, how much would it cost? for all 8 teeth and which would be the best way of approaching this? I would greatly appreciate any help your expertise could lend to this matter.
A. The reshaping of teeth can be carried out in a number of ways including simple bonding of white filling to the teeth (cost £50) or veneers/crowns (starting from £450). The choice depends on the durability of the material needed, the extent of the correction required and the position of the opposing teeth.

Q. Hi, I have just returned from a visit to my dentist today. My appointment was for preparation for a crown on upper molar, second from back. This tooth had broken in half followng root canal treatment and filling 5 years ago. My current dentist put a temporary cover on it and we left it for six months to ensure that the seal hadn’t been breached. When he removed the temporary today he advised he would be unable to save the tooth as what was left of the tooth was partially below the gum-line rendering a crown that would not be viable. He suggested either a bridge, which he felt was not a good option due to the grinding down of the adjacent teeth and suggested an implant at a cost of £2,000. Having done some research on the internet some sites have said that crowns can be placed even if there is only a root left (that has had root canal treatment) and a post can be inserted into the root for the crown to be attached to. Can you advise if this is a possibility please? I look forward to your response. Many thanks.
A. the details are all important here. some teeth can be managed with crowns some are better extracted.
the size, shape and location of the residual tooth : filling are all important.
Before implants there were several common ways to solve the problems. But the fix might only last 5-10years, Implants can be more predictable in some cases. so tend to be increasing in popularity.

Q. I wanted to get my teeth whitened but i have a crown on my right front tooth and on my left front tooth the anamel wore away really bad so my dentist put some sort of layer on top of it , can i still whiten my teeth and if i do will it change the color of my crown?
A. Thanks for your question, whitening procedures will only whiten your natural tooth tissue. Therefore any restorations which you have had placed in the past would remain the same colour. When my patients, who have a crown or veneer wish to whiten their teeth, they would normally have the restorations replaced afterwards. I hope this helps.

Q. Hey Andrew, I was just wanting a little bit of advice please. I have a Cap on one of my front teeth, and a crown on the other. The Crown is now a different shade to my other teeth. They are all a little bit uneven. Would Veneers be the best opition? If so, how much could i expect to pay? Thanks in advance,
A. You could replace the crown and match it to the other teeth or change the other teeth with either tooth whitening or veneers to create a more even colur/shape to your smile. Veneers at my clinic start from £450, let me know if you’d like me to take a look

A. Thanks for your questions, there is a system availble called Cerec which enables the dentist to prepare, make and fit a crown within a single dental visit. With regards to closing the gap, there are systems available which can work in as little as six weeks, however you would need to consult a dental professional to discover which would be suitable for your individual case.

Q. I have a post crown which came loose, my dentist reseated it. He said that it maybe that the socket into which the post is inserted may have cracked, in which case he will have to replace the postcrown with a bridge. Is this the only possible alternative and what does it involve. I would appreciate your advice
A. It is often the only thing you can do when the root has cracked. You could also consider a dental implant as this wouldn’t mean drilling down the adjacent teeth which is often required for a bridge.

Q. Dr Solanki, Would a product like Invisalign be suitable for someone who has a crown on one of their two front top teeth and a double winged bridge on one of their lower left teeth? Are there any other options that could be used that have the same effect of straightening teeth that have gaps between them that could be used? Thank you for your time
A. Thanks for your questions, it is still possible to have Orthodontic treatment when you have crowns and bridges, Although I would recommend that any new restorations are delayed until after orthodontic treatment. There are many different methods for teeth straightening, each with their own advantages, such as invisble braces and braces which can work in as little as six weeks. I would recommend that you consult with a dentist or orthodontist to gain advise on which system would be best suited to your particular case.
