Will My NHS Exemption Card Entitle Me to a Porcelain Crown?

Thursday, May 19th, 2016
Q.

I have a ceramic crown that broke and my dentist says he will need to make a new metal crown. This is for a molar, number 6. You will be able to see it when I smile, so I am hoping to get a porcelain bonded to metal crown.

I am pregnant and have an NHS maternity exemption card, but I am not sure if this will only cover a metal crown or if I will need to pay privately to make it look like a normal tooth. Would this be considered cosmetic? I am not really sure what the “free” NHS exemption card entitles me to. I am happy to pay privately because it is important to me that I don’t show metal when I smile. I would just like to be prepared.

Should I Get a Silver or Porcelain Crown?

Thursday, July 23rd, 2015
Q.

I have been told by my dentist I need a crown on one of my molars at the bottom. I cannot decide whether to have the silver NHS one a or porcelain one. What price are they usually? Why can’t the dentist do a filling instead of doing a crown? There is a small amount of tooth left. Which in your opinion is the strongest crown? Do dentists do the porcelain crown under the NHS or not? I believe I hope you can help me.

I Was Fitted With A Metal Crown And Now I Have Dry Mouth. Can I Get A Porcelain Crown Through The NHS?

Friday, January 10th, 2014
Q.

Hello, Dr. Moore I have a problem that I hope you can help me with. I have had to have my porcelain crown fitted with metal crown on a molar at the back because I was told the NHS does not allow for a porcelain one. I am now finding that I am suffering from a weird dryness and numbness in the mouth and tongue and think that I am intolerant to the metal crown. It has been suggested that I have oral candida but I show no signs of these symptoms. Can I have it replaced with a porcelain one and how much is the cost under NHS? Thank you in advance for any advice you can offer me.

Which is the toughest type of crown?

Monday, October 4th, 2010
Q.
I had two veneers on my upper front teeth. I’ve had problems with them coming off. One has come off and I’m now going to get crowns. I really want something hardwearing but which also looks good. Can you advise whether metal bonded ones or pure porcelain ones are the toughest?.,

Is there a difference in quality between a porcelain crown and a metal crown?

Friday, August 6th, 2010
Q.
Hi I need crowns on my two back molars, the difference in price is a lot – £600. My question is, is there a difference in quality or durability other than appearance? For the metal crown will more of the tooth have to be drilled away? thanks,

I’m worried that I have paid for a certain type of material, but have got another. What can I do?

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010
Q.
Hi, I’ve had 3 crowns fitted the first was metal based layered with porcelain – this was ok but I had a dark gum line. So I decided to have the next 2 crowns ‘all ceramic’ to avoid this dark line, but the dark gum line is even worse with the ceramic crowns. After reading up about crowns on the web and something a stand in dentist said at my practice I’m wondering if I’ve paid for ceramic but got the cheaper metal and porcelain crowns. Please advise.,

I have got to have either large fillings or crowns on LL6 and LL7. Would the nhs do white crowns on these teeth? Would white large fillings hold? Thanks.,
